BoTW has better exploration with the ice power letting you cross rivers. I hate not having that in TOTK. I also think BoTW benefits more from it's DLC content being more varied, actually, BoTW just has more variety even in the vanilla game. The flower girl shrine is memorable, as was the island where you're stripped naked of everything, then there's Guardians appearance in open world. TOTK fixed some things like enemy variety and wells were an awesome addition, but BoTW gives me a better balanced experience. The biggest gripe is BoTW has a little too much rain in the cycles and I got all 120 shrines, I know what I'm talking about when I say rain feels too common in BoTW.

ALTTP was really great, still very much holds up today. The 3D Zeldas on the other hand have not. I don't have any interest revisiting them because they are fairly rudimentary by today's standards and development team focused on visuals and storytelling that makes them very tedious (especially Twilight Princess). A Link to the Past had a sequel, it's called ALTTP 2 in Japan. In that one you can do just the same thing as Zelda 1. I beat it without dying once so it was never even a renting game.

Wind Waker is nothing like BotW whatsoever.
I get the sailing itself feels superficially different from OoT/MM/TP but honestly everything on ground in Wind Waker has the exact same design philosophy as those games do.
The difference with that and BotW is that in BotW anywhere you go on foot is some sort of boilerplate asset-reuse tileset crap, with Korok Seeds or Shrine-balls you have to carry to pedestals, to see repeated content.
In Wind Waker every island is a custom built geomitry, and there are unique Treasure Charts all over the game, and the main story follows all the same principles as Ocarina of Time with its Item gating and dungeon level design, and plenty of cutscenes that makes the game grow and change as it progresses.

The fact that Wind Waker also has an entire segment where the world is eternally night time with a "ominous" music when you sail and Windfall Island enters a Special Story Phase, is also something they just don't do in Nu-Zelda, because nothing can be linear in them.

the only Zelda games that are that generic is Zelda 1, BotW and TotK. Every other Zelda occasionally locks down the world to force a specific mood or story-beat.

I mean, I guess? In comparison to most other shrines it's slightly notable but it's mostly due to a lack of variety in terms of shrines. It's not even really that interesting of a shrine to bring up. I remember building retarded contraptions in TOTK way more imo.
But like 10% of BOTW shrines are literally just combat challenges or freebies for some ""puzzle"" completed before entering and at least 20% are shrines that have 1 idea that never gets expanded on much more.

Very much disagree that this is better. It's not very engaging when you see a river. The moment you see one you know how you're going to cross it, and the difficulty isn't really there. That not being there in TOTK automatically means that you'll probably think a bit more about whether or not you even want to cross the river, and if you do, what resources you should use to do it.

You say that as though a series of games has an inherent NEED to "change" iteration. Just for the sake of change.
They stumbled upon a very unique and interesting way of communicating an adventure experience. One that very few other game companies attempted to copy, so it filled a unique niche.
So, throw away the unique approach that only Zelda does, and instead shift completely to open world sandbox that dozens of AAA franchises are doing.

What you've to understand is that it captured the vibes. OoT is not a formula. It's getting introduced to a world, exploring the overworld, doing action-rpg things and so on. I never played ubisoft, seemed eh, or a single 3d zelda post-oot(too poorfag), picked this up...it's ludo. -The- Zelda for the current console. Did you expect the same game up to polygons (despite former entries using pixels) even though it's for the Switch(TM), a brand new console? You may be autistic.

Breath of the Wild is so dragged down and diminished by the durability system. Even if you want to defend it as an idea, the implementation is almost objectivley bad due to the effect it reliably, with some consistency has on the way people play the game.

As soon as you have decent gear, it becomes pointless to do anything but main quest objectives and shrines, because to engage with any other part of the game is a no win situation. There's no point engaging with some Bokoblin camp to see what's inside, because you'll just acrue damage to your current weapons, without any possibility of getting something meaningfully better. Its this absolutely beautiful flexibally interactive wide open world that in every other way should be an absolute joy to explore and engage with in every possible way, but once you hit a certain point in the game you just start running past everything as you beeline to dungeons and shrines.

Durability is the least of my issues with BotW, and I'm the OP. It's a fine system that keeps artificial rarity happening to mask the fact that there's fucking nothing else in the game, and no reason to explore a whole continent with Shrines, Korok Seeds, more Shrines, more Korok Seeds, and a few more Shrines and Korok Seeds, and more asset-reuse of Ruined buildings with nothing in it that enables your curiosity.
It's a game that reveals what lies ahead long before you've ever seen the full world, by basing itself around a feature-list that you've exhausted 1/10 through the entirety of the content.

>Clear a dozen Shrines on the way

>You saw a Grassy region, an Icy region, rain and thunder, nighttime and daytime, an a dry region, and a Dragon.
>Cleared an enemy camp. Fought a Hinox and Stone Talus.
>Saw one of the big "Maze" areas.
You just saw almost all the actual content there is to see in the game. You've only played it for 10 hours. The rest is more of the same on repeat. If you keep playing, you'll have 150 hours or so, of just repeating the same content you've already seen but in different locations around the rest of the map.
Only Gerudo Desert notably surprises. The rest is quite literally just a "more of the same" and I don't fucking get why people jizzed to this game when it came out. People were actually playing it but this didn't register with them?

Korok Seeds aside there are almost no "Zelda-like Puzzles" out in the open. It's just a lot of boilerplate content repetition like all Ubisoft games that inspired it.

I'm replaying ALttP right now and I always forget how it has random cave entrances with a "1B, 1F" type of map inside it. I think TotK actually feels really similar to ALttP, and that's probably why it's the better game.
