It definitely lost something of it's soul when they put Joker in it. Feels increasingly like a video game popularity contest now, as opposed to a celebration of and deep dive into Nintendo's history.
The peak Smash Bros experience is when you're a kid, and you learn about something like Fire Emblem or the Game and Watch even existing, because of Smash Bros.
At this point, they should be dredging up over looked characters from Nintendo's late 90's and 00's era. They should put Captain Rainbow and Doshin the Giant in the game, as opposed to "guy from Expedition 33" or something.

Funny you should say this but Sora whether you want to admit it or not is Square Enix's most NUMEROUS protagonist in anything. Sora is the Square Enix character who has the most number of games where he's the main lead. That in turn makes him valuable to Square Enix. More so than Cloud across the decades especially because Kingdom Hearts is Sora's Story and it's not over.

And the side games for Kingdom Hearts are important and most of them are playable on Nintendo devices. And you know Kingdom Hearts 3 will be ported to Switch 2. It's all a matter of time. That's better than Tekken which doesn't give Nintendo love.

I think in Sonic's case it is more Sega having no confidence in Sonic by himself carrying a roster. When Crossworlds was announced, people bitched and moaned about it just being Sonic characters and later we got other Sega characters along with Nick shit confirmed. The crossovers were added in MK8 as a desperate push to help the game and the WiiU (and the Switch's success being an uncertainty while MK8DX was being developed in the case of the Inklings). Notice how they didn't do any crossover shit for DX's DLC, which started well after the Switch was proven to be heroin-laced cracked for stupid people.

That's one silver lining of World - it's almost certainly going to be a bundle slut for the Switch 2 all generation long, so it won't need the help of guest characters.

Kinda depends if we're looking at this from a Japanese or International perspective. Japan players probably would've recognized Marth, Ness and Lucas whereas internationally we wouldn't have. Little Mac and Duck Hunt shouldn't be here since they were both from iconic games back on the NES, and Punch-Out (wii) had released recenty before 4 and did really well. (Plus Little Mac was an assist in Brawl)
Only one who I think properly goes here I think is Roy, and thats only because his game got delayed so he appeared in Melee first.

Here's a REAL curveball. They wouldn't have the balls to do it unless it's all Nintendo franchises only.

Ult has three massive flaws that can't be fixed without patches/reworks/overhauls.

The games biggest strength is its roster but competitively you're going to be using the same characters and running into the same characters for the most part but that ties into its three biggest flaws.

1. The characters aren't well thought out so there's a right way to play a character and a generally wrong way where you're making mistakes that aren't alligning with your characters design, you aren't making different choices you're making the wrong or right choice.

2. The worst characters exemplify this design where their gameplay will center around spamming their best moves with some subtlety between which moves are better but it's more 'If you're doing anything else, you're just wrong because that's unsafe.' when having some form of risk involved is how attacks are SUPPOSED to work.
3. The devs treat hit/hurt boxes like quirks and funny aspects of the character that you balance later but they also left them in an unbalanced state and abandoned the game so....

Still waiting on a proper Playstation and Xbox character. that would be the ultimate final boundary.
Microsoft came the closest since they allowed Banjo and Steve, but at the same time i feel they are not a true "mr xbox". banjo is seen as a lost nintendo character and steve is still kind of a multiplat guy
with sony supposedly porting their games more, i do wonder if they will be open to a cross over, like Rachet, or Jack and Daxter or even death stranding.
