apparently it was f2p and the steam release will turn it into a paid game, and the community are not happy

That's a shame, the core of the game has a lot of potential and it could have been big. Can't say it's not deserved though.

From reading the Reddit Reynad has gone full jew, I think additional heroes now cost $20 and if you want it on Steam you have to buy it again. All this while the game still breaks constantly and they've done nothing to fix it.

The game wasn't in a bad state this season. Stuff like deleting guaranteed upgrade from silver to gold sucked, but everyone adjusted to it. The only prevalent builds are drum pyg/ fitness pyg, but there are plenty of builds that counter it.
The client and that fucking retarded launcher also work much better, although there are still shitton of bugs. The game's main issue is absolute fucking apes that are responsible for community management (I'm pretty sure Reynad does it himself now and he went full schizo after covid so that figures), otherwise it's not that bad. Pulling rug with 20$ heroes is a dick move, but at least they are not doing NFT shit now.

Apparently him and his dev team insta-banned anyone who said anything even remotely neutral or negative. Gonna be funny to see the Steam reviews now that they can't censor complaints there.

I enjoy the game though it has issues. Biggest being each season has followed a pattern of new cards -> insanely busted shit is found that needs emergency nerfs -> meta is better for awhile -> get the same builds spammed -> game becomes bit stale -> repeat. Also I gave them money for a gem doubler and then they told me gems can't buy heroes feels really bad. They really should have made the steam launch be 45 for 3 hero unlock tokens or something so switching launchers wasn't so painful. Still think Stelle looks fun tho.

the builds are extremely one dimensional.
you are at the mercy of the whims of the matchmaking algorithm on every turn.
it can just pull a top meta player ghost out of a hat that instantly kills you and decide you lose on that turn because they weren't confident the game would have enough live players to match you against.
they called asynchronous matchmaking a "feature" but it genuinely sucks ass knowing the guy that beat you probably isn't even playing the game right now and you simply lost because it randomly chose the ghost of someone that had an insanely lucky run.

Bazaar was a horrible let down, there's like not that much depth to it, and basic itemization seems to be horribly imbalanced, let alone talk about the heroes. There is just nothing you can do to interact.

overall though I'm still enjoying it, variety is much better now and even though you can still force builds, it's more like forcing an archetype rather than exact items. I'll gladly pay $20 per hero, I wouldn't touch a goypass with a 10ft pole but paying for content is actually fair. The $45 base cost doesn't affect me, but I think it's a bad idea for a game that is coming to mobile. making vanessa free but locked to normal play and charging for each hero instead seems more realistic.

the meltdown from the community is genuinely insane though, the worst are the steamies who are infuriated they can't play the game via steam and need to continue using the launcher (EA, ubisoft, blizzard all do this with dual launches and have done so for a literal decade at this point). Holy fucking shit, I played it for 3 rounds, got crushed 3 times by people who used the OP combo you had to "unlock" from the paid content only. And uninstalled.
There was a flood of people trying to do damage control as well, which was hillarious, because while they were constantly spamming reddit threads how the paid cards are not OP, you also had "easiest win of my life" and "hard carried by X" threads where it was always built around the paid content.

Game is dogshit, they fucked up the payment model, and good luck salvaging something that got such a negative stigma. The only shot you have is releasing it in a country that does not speak english and never saw the fallout.

Reynoodle will always have a sweet spot in my heart because I watched him play original (pre-naxx) hearthstone when I was in highschool. Even back then, when he declared he was going to be the leader of an entire e-sports organization, and then be the leader of an entire new video game company, I could never understand why he didn't just take the money and chill.

Motherfucker was living in a mansion, beachside California. His job was streaming a video game a few hours a day, and he was young and genuinely attractive (especially when compared to other hearthstone streamers). Dude won the fucking lottery and threw it away to become the angry, drugged out, customer service rep of a failing company that lies about its monetization plans. What a tragedy.
