Becuase by this point it should be obvious to anyone that MonolithSoft (the Xenoblade devs who Nintendo boughted) are seen as the Golden Goose because of Breath of the Wild, and they're pushed to make Open World by the corporation no matter how little the devs actually cared for it or not. In the Ask The Devs for MKW I got the impression the Nintendo-side devs (the Mario Kart Team) got annoyed with the way Xenoblade's team worked, and the two groups didn't work well together.
It's just really stupid. Can Nintendo make any of their old franchises without forcing a completely untraditional mode over it anymore? I think this comes back to the quote in 2021 when the new Nintendo CEO said "I want the developers to experiment."
I think he's gotten told by people on the dev side like Shinya Takahashi and a lot of younger devs that they wanna zoom zoom and not be beholden to expected Nintendo formulas, and unlike Iwata he just heard that and was like "Yeah do it."
A significant quote from Iwata I spotted was from an Iwata Asks about Zelda Skyward Sword. By then they had started talking about maybe dropping some features that were tying Zelda down as a series, but Iwata said "You can never get rid of the Da-na-na-naaa! when you pick up treasures, it's too iconic."
Well guess what, they dropped it in BotW.
