I don't usually do "evil" playthroughs, but there's something about BG3 that just makes me wanna punch the first person I see in the face. Like, it actually takes restraint not to slaughter the entire group of people who said something mean to you. It's a fun deviation since you can actually kill people who slighted you without a hitch and introducing you to a world that is actively hostile to you is nice, so I guess the characters are good.
The companions have the same thing, but they also grow on you a bit, so I guess not wanting to rat them out because they've been useful to you and said a nice thing once or twice is also good.

I only really played the first two BGs and IWD and I only remember them having the "traditional" Tolkien races.
Most "alien" desing was Viconia because of her blueish skin, but everybody else was relatively normal.

Drow could be recruited in BG1 and 2.
A Gith is recruited in Neverwinter Nights 2 (thought late game). Githzerai variety of Gith rather than Githyanki variety.
Tiefling can be recruited in BG1 (and is one of the main companions in Neverwinter Nights 2).

Makes more sense to go Gith than a dragonborn honestly.

I feel like Shadowheart should have remained far more hostile to you even if you romance her because of her continuing sharran loyalties. She would also have benefited from a stronger breakdown and a rebound where she mentally rebuilds herself when she is revealed the truth she had been suspecting, instead of slowly turning into a weepy teenage girl

For better or for worse, BG3 is much more "power fantasy" than some other CRPGs. Old-school Bioware RPGs, characters had specific sexualities and preferences and were a tad more immersive. BG3, they don't want to lock you out of a relationship by that, so they'll be whatever sexuality is needed to allow you that possibility if you want that for your character.

I actually prefer a more set idea for characters than the power-fantasy angle. More immersive to me. But there were also people angry with Cyberpunk 2077 about Judy being strictly lesbian, so... different people want different things from their RPG.

What I hate about most visual novels is how there's no actual gameplay or feeling and it's a drag that makes you want to skip everything and go play something else. Why are we pretending that Pathfinder has complex gameplay when the core gameplay loop consists of buffing up before the battle, throwing down a crowd control spell on turn with, and then autoattacking to victory for literally every fight? The game plays exactly like that whether you're on Normal, Core, or Unfair.
Baldur 3's gameplay in contrast is a lot more complex. You can use the environment to gain a tactical advantage by climbing atop lights and buildings to shoot them while forcing enemies to climb to get to you, you can push enemies off cliffs, you can wetten them with water and then electrocute them, you can pick them up and throw them, you can leap over enemies, you can deny enemies movement with a forced reaction attack, there's destructible environments that can be leveraged to fall upon enemies, you can push or trip enemies back into crowd controls spots and then still have enough action points to attack or re-manuver yourself. There's truly so much you can do in every encounter in Baldur's Gate 3 that it's actually insane

Timed content tend to be obvious, as it has been said if you approach a burning house or somebody who's been poisoned they will not survive a Long Rest. But you can safely count such occasions on one hand in Act1. The big trigger that somewhat advances the world state is entering the Rosymorn Monastery Trail for the first time. Don't worry, the game will warn you! Technically the Monastery is optional and still Act1 but you can go into Act2 from there (Shadow-Cursed Lands) which is the next big trigger afterwards. Now these can fail even high-level quests too, if nothing due to not having access to the said region (in the latter case) anymore. No need to worry though, just make sure to take care of whatever you come across before making the big jump.

As for the Long Resting: listen to others and spam that shit. I know I missed plenty of camp cutscenes and interactions by being resourceful. And for what? I'm on my first run and thus playing without mods but I have this one saved for my second run: https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/1879 By default this dialogue icon means a character has something new to say to you. This mods also makes it trigger if you have a new Camp Event unlocked, in other words: when it's time to do another Long Rest if you don't want to miss out on content. Just keep exploring and food ceases to be an issue early on.

Raphael's "deal" makes literally no sense in the context of his threats and the suggestion he has "leverage" over the player. i don't have an opinion on pathfinder since i have not played it, but anybody hating on bg3 for having no combat gameplay is a total muppet. bg3 is peak tacticool rpg.
the ways you can defeat enemies are only limited by your creativity. i just got past the gnoll group fight with rugan/kugan(?) on the 5th try, in part because he & his buddy kept dying. had to bring lae'zel & my character equipped with regular barrels to form a wall & stop the gnolls from advancing, while karlach spamthrows barrel bombs like it's the syrian civil war.
& that's just one of many possibilities. this game is the epitome of fun, which is what all games should strive to be.
