Borderlands 1 is a good game
Anonymous No.717902785
Yes, correct.
It was fun, and the writing was in a decent spot relative to everything that came after it, in that it wasn't flanderised and obnoxious.
The world was tight and interesting, and it wasn't filled to bursting with memes and lefty politics.

But nitpicky faggots will shit on anything that is fun to play.

There's this very specific feeling I get from the first area of the first Borderlands: the heavy shadows with the clear blue sky remind me of early morning in summer when I was a child.
I don't really know how to explain it: never seen any other game with that kind of atmosphere. Makes it feel like you're about to head out on adventure because it seems like Summer is just beginning.

Yes. It is a good adventure. Cool characters, just enough humor to be funny while actually being about a treasure hunting on a junkyard desert planet full of madmen cannibals, bandits, monsters, evil corpo paramilitary and trigger-happy aliens. It was just serious enough to be cool and funny enough to be, well, funny without dropping the cool part.
Second and onwards are just shitty dramas shitting on characters from previous games by killing them (least bad scenario), turning them into miserable whiners, turning them into miserable jobbers (just imagine - fucking siren bounty hunter can't just pull a simple gun from a holster and drop this shitty villain by shooting his guts out even if some anti-siren depowerer is active), or turning them into obnoxious retards - courtesy of Randy fucking Pitchford and Anthony fucking Burch. And even humor was overdone in a bad way, while funny setting-fitting elemental "fatalities" were cut away.

Reminder, that "unofficial patch" and "map enchancement" mods (by the same author) exist for the original version, that fix a lot of bugs (including classmods), respawns and other problems and unfinished moments (some are fixed in demaster, but demaster is unoptimized shit with new bugs).
Mods are available on nexus and on author's github.

BL1 had a really nice atmosphere, and I liked that it was largely a serious tone and story that just had a few fun characters here and there.
Actually cautiously optimistic for 4 because of it supposedly pushing for a more serious tone again. I mostly didn't mind the sillier tone in 2 (outside a few really dumb side content), but 3 went way too far with the humour IMO.

I'm not touching 3 since I claim to have standards yet I fell for the pre sequel, let's make it clear, the game having humor isn't the problem.
The humor being obnoxious liberal safe edgy gruel pushed down your ear holes by nails-scratching-on-a-chalkboard type voice actors ( all frauds ) is the reason for it being shit. It's enough to trigger a mass shooting event.

I mean, the lack of plot let you fill in the blanks anyway. I was 100% just motivated by playing the game itself.
First time you open a red chest- boom, loot dopamine. And you're telling me there's a vault with giga treasure in it? Sold. Boom, player motivated.
There's a big lancer armoury full of guns? Yup, I'm raiding that shit.
It was extremely genuine, even though the games "voice" is incredibly sarcastic. The rest of the games aren't, it's constant "and then and then and then" random bullshit. Oh no, Maya got clapped! Cool, I don't care. Chasing vaults, already know there's no loot. Don't care. You play it for the same reason you level characters in wow: to get to the end of the lame story so you can spam bosses/instances you actually enjoy.

a relative variety of difficulty to grind shit from, good feeling gunplay and honestly the variety and how far you can push so many guns in bl3 without crutching too hard on 1 specific tree is honestly just amazing

those stupid fucks at gearbox really need to not have so many anti-melee mechanics though, like what the fuck.

The quests being like that arent even the only problem. The guns drops just feels so toxic thinking of where iit led the gaming industry to, the guns dont even feel that great, the world is empty, the quests are lineal but also boring because nothing really changes in them but you just do the same thing over and over.

honestly borderlands 2 is also really good. the atmosphere created by the visuals and music is incredible. when the characters aren't yammering at you there can be this really affecting experience of wandering a beautiful but desolate place amid gunfire. also when the jokes aren't reliant on the dialogue -- when they are visual or integrated into the game interface or dependent on players acting out the punchline -- they can be pretty good, like that quest where you kill yourself for Jack or that one with the cursed gun or that one with hammerlock and the renamed monsters

BL1 is the best one. Best loot, best gun generation (actually based on the parts instead of a pre-determined rarity on spawn), the game is simple and there's few times where you're stuck standing while someone talks
BL2 changed this up by messing with the loot gen, the enemy scaling, and the story. I still liked some of the story because they really did do a good job with Handsome Jack and the environments were good. A lot more talking, though.
Didn't play TPS, just seemed like bl2 but more.

BL3 is a whole different beast. The best gameplay (I really loved it) but with such generous loot generation that I'm pretty sure by level 30 I had all slots filled with legendaries which really reduced how special they were especially since usually they wiped the floor with the other purples and blues I could find.
And then there's the talking. NPCs never shut up. Every mission you have some fucking asshole jabbering on in your ear. Almost every character is insufferable, annoying, or awful and they never EVER shut up. You're forced to sit and wait for people to talk. They talk while you're doing things. They talk while you're driving. I had to mute the dialogue and eventually I got rid of the subtitles too. I hated it, and I have little hope for BL4 in this regard.
That said, they do still know how to write, because I did find Mordecai's birthday party for the dead girl rather good. The bit where you're raiding the VIllain's base with all the other people was well done too. And they somehow made Tiny Tina less annoying purely by how much worse everyone else is. So there may be some hope, but it was so tiring.

Also, oddly enough, BL3 plays better solo than with friends. Player power level is so high that another player will just be stealing kills from you. There were times playing with a friend that I didn't get to do anything because they could kill everything so fast.

Borderlands only resembles HALO's gameplay by the end of the loop when you've got all the good guns and most enemies are no longer bullet sponges. For most of a run, it's more like Diablo with guns.

Currently playing through the full series for the first time in anticipation for 4, which I suspect will be kinda good for some reason. Skipped 1 because it didn't click with me back in the day, and getting near the end of 2 for the first time. It's definitely better than I remember, even if it's been stingy about epics/legendaries this run. Is there any DLC I shouldn't miss?

that's a joke right?
not a single patch arrived to fix issues that cropped up immediately after release
they also massively increased the drop rates, fucking up the perfectly fine loot progression for no reason at all

it is somewhat boring from a modern perspective
I'd say the game starts becoming fun halfway into the playthrough, it's a bit of a slog until then and the enemies aren't all that interesting

Im glad to see others feel similar. Maybe it resonates with me because I grew up in the nevada desert. That first area has my favorite atmosphere of all time ( tied with the first fable). I usually play through it at least 2 - 3 times a year. The difficulty, the noises, the travel distances, the look, the enemies, everything feels perfect. I would start a borderlands 1 playthrough on my deathbed.

Its Expansions were fun, base game was a absolute slog and boring as fuck, it was more a tech demo for what could be in the future, and while it's expansions delivered, it's sequel was good from the start.

All the existing characters became either annoying or idiotic, thanks to Burch just reading a wiki instead of playing the damn game.
>Marcus was "just" a merchant and entrepreneur in BL1, becomes a turbo-jew in 2
>Zed was "just" a doctor who lost his medical licence because he can't do much with what he has besides cutting a bit too deep in BL1, becomes a turbo-retard "teehee I don't have a license" in 2
>Moxxi was "just" an entertainer with perhaps an impressively low body count (3 "husbands") if you remember that she lives in a world of violence and pain in BL1, becomes a turbo-slut that literally fucked half the planet in 2
>Scooter was "just" a mechanic in BL1, becomes a turbo-incestuous redneck stereotype in 2
I had no hopes for the series after this and it seems I was right because people can apparently be worse at writing than Anthony fucking Burch, SOMEHOW.

Also, the linear instead of exponential scaling meant that finding a gun that fit your playstyle was something great because you could keep using it for a while until you found another, while BL2 meant it was outclassed within like 20 minutes.
