The reason a mechanical breakdown of magic makes a work feel more sci-fi is because mechanical breakdowns always feel sci-fi, because traditionally sci-fi is the only thing that even tries to make it feel like there's a real set of rules that exists for some reason, and not just some guy sitting behind the scenes of the universe making shit up as needed. You need to be able to anticipate something about what's coming next to be engaged in a story, so "just don't have magic with mechanics" is a retarded fucking critique. The issue is stopping the storytelling to explain them in depth, in character.
