Why haven't you learned to play fighting games?
What keeps you from playing fighting games?

There is a minor barrier between what my brain wants to perform and what my thumbs are able to execute that only really crops up in fighting games. In other games such as shooters it feels more like I'm inhabiting the character's space and performing its actions with a 1:1 ratio of connectivity.

I did learn I even own an arcade stick but I have nobody to play with and mindlessly matching random people just ain't that fun.

I still play webm related to this day, thankfully it's still very much active, also the only fighting game I'm currently playing, would like to play TT2 but don't feel like digging up the ol'PS3, then hooking it up.
Too bad we haven't gotten a TT2/DR port on modern hardware, really in the mood to play a real Tekken game, hate whatever animeshit we have now.

I've tried a good handful of fighting games and never had a moment where it ever clicked for me and incentivized me to keep playing. That being said, I have been dabbling in some older titles like Darkstalkers, GGXX Accent Core+, Third Strike on occasion and loving how they feel, but feel like I need an extra buddy to properly learn and improve along. Going through FightCade is weirdly isolating.

I haven't stopped trying though, I'm gonna give Killer Instinct 2013 a shake when its on sale next time since I've heard its a good inbetween a classic/modern style with a strong single-player component with its tutorials + content. It seems lively enough.

I know that feel. Fightcade can feel like you’re off on some little island somewhere and sometimes you get matches with someone.

It's a genre that's only fun when you and the other person are of very similar skill levels and rancid otherwise.

I noticed that the more fighting games I play the better my experience is overall. It's not necessary, neither it's fun, to be a top player in a game when you can be decently good at 10 or 20 of them. Playing one game autistically is depressing and everyone should avoid it.

Use a gamepad for 3D games unless you know your character has precise inputs, otherwise use a stick. I think gamepad is only good for easy Tekken characters. Sure you can play anything on a pad but you'll probably kill it fast, it's not worth it.

I love in Europe and for 5-10 most popular games it's not hard to find a match, although your opponent might be from the Middle East or even USA. Plenty of players in Turkey and sometimes Spain but very few from Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. I wouldn't be too worried about ping though, I had decent matches with South Americans. It's the Wi-Fi users you should avoid.

it's a lot of investment into one game and I dont really play games like that. I'd rather learn something else, though I'm sure many think you learn are transferrable between fighting games. I try to practice a little because I think fighting games are fun, but I think I'll suck forever since it won't be enough. Trying third strike, currently afraid of playing against anyone else.

It's a different type of memory, more specifically muscle memory. It takes thousands of hours to train your brain compared to rote memorisation where you just need to remember trivia

I think events like the Sajam Slam or the Crazy Raccoon Cup are probably the best things for getting newfags into fightan. Getting balanced teams would be difficult but the format where you have like several different skill levels working together helps to showcase the game at levels other than the tippy top and probably makes it less intimidating.
Also 2XKO is gonna flop HARD with casuals. That is my prediction.

I know it's said a lot, but I think long combos need to go. They add nothing to modern FGs as they are so trivially easily to execute once you get decent at them, but are massively off putting to casuals. They raise the skill floor while doing nothing to the ceiling.

I'm pretty open to trying short single player experiences that are outside of my comfort zone but if I'm going to invest 100s of hours into gitting gud at a fighting game it really needs to click with me and none of the active stuff out there really clears that bar. my only other option is messing around with old fightcade stuff which again is fine to experiment with here or there but not something I'm going dedicate time to consistently.

I can't figure out how to do the inputs consistently. Like on a controller Right -> Down -> Right-Diagonal-Down -> Light or whatever for Luke's ranged thingy I can't get the transition between right and down without going diagonal consistently and I don't think I would enjoy the genre enough to put the time required to figure it out in.

I learned what I could but I can't really get to the level to maintain myself at B rank for long. I also play on analog stick instead of hitbox / keyboard so doing parry checks between forward and down is a little too hard. I can't never figure out the timing for anti air parries either, especially against dives. I can get by on C rank and some times against lower B rankers though

Fighting games as a genre lack the dynamism a lot of other genres have, and i'd just get bored spending thousands of hours getting good.

I honestly believe KI is the perfect fighting game. It is simple enough for anyone to be able to play it to some degree, while having a lot of depth if you really dig into it. It also understands that just watching someone combo you is not a fun experience, so they allow you to turn their offense into your offense at the drop of a hat, which makes all fights much more proactive because neither player is scared of getting hit and being locked in an uniterruptible combo.

For me, games are all about movement. If your game consists of 2 dudes looking at each other and your options are, slowly walk in either direction, the most boring jump ever implemented, or duck, then it's a shit game for slow brained geriatric monkeys, and that's almost every fighting game.
Smash Bros. Melee is a rare exception, every fighting game should have at least that level of freedom of movement and variety in movement expression.

Depends on the game. Stuff like Tekken and SC where movement flows more easily between moves and moving I find easy, but stuff like street fighter where you move, you come to a stop and kick I suck at. Most I figure I just need a controller with better direction buttons since the right input feels much more consequential.

Fighting games are player vs player, a genre known for both shoddy dlc practices and poor balancing, so you can often fight characters who are just objectively better than your own and the only way to even that gap is to buy them

Fighting games have robust, complex movesets per character
They have complicated defensive systems and mind-games around them

Your movesets are simple
The enemies can't think, they're AI, they don't adapt at all
Your defensive options are incredibly simple and easy to abuse (a great shield trivializes every souls game and elden ring btw)
The way people beat bosses they're stuck at in those games is ti simply have bigger numbers

I played Tekken 7 everyday for like 2 years straight and made the transition to 2D with Street Fighter 6 and it was really hard. It took me months. One of the hardest things to focus on is crossups. Eventually all I would do is anti-air all match long and it gave me the confidence to start pressing buttons.

Absurdly frontloaded difficulty barrier. In order to be even a beginner - I stress that, BEGINNER - in any given fighting game past Divekick level of complexity, you first have to go to the practice mode and research the characters for 200+ hours. That is absurdly unfun to the point that I would rather stick needles through my dick. Once you suffer your way through that torture, you can start playing the actual game, and suffer some more as you lose 9 matches out of 10.

This is why I repeatedly tell that fighting games need to drop focus on multiplayer. A single player game would never have a problem like this, cause you can put that 200+ hours of learning into the single player and make it fun. You can make the enemies retarded enough that the person who has never seen a fighting game in his life can beat them, without making them literally immobile blocks of tofu like in the practice room. You can make the experience painless and engaging.

But no. Instead every game just makes the players eat shit, as some kind of weird hazing ritual. I'm not in the market for that.

All devs need to do is do more co-op stuff like that one mode in Alpha 3. I find my friends new to the genre often feel overwhelmed trying to learn how to play the game while in the middle of a 1v1 and get frustrated either way if you take it easy or wail on them. Idk man. As an old man with kids it just feels pointless to learn these. I also think the lack of movement is a huge factor in why so many people lose interest in them so fast. When you understand the kits and what they do, of course it's interesting, but until then you just feel stiff as a board in all of these games. Something grossly underappreciated about Smash is the freedom to just run around. The only fighting games I took the time to understand the mechanics of and practice were Pokken Tournament and SF4. Teaching someone to play Pokken tournament or SF4 was impossible, because the only thing the other party could do was get their ass beat. Teaching someone to play Smash was easy, NOT because of the simple inputs, learning inputs is the easiest part of fighting games. The other person could RUN AWAY and dodge hazards or items while seeing what their character did. It felt good to move. It does not feel good to move in other fighting games when that is kind of the only thing you can do.

Congratulations, you've passed the first filter. Platform fighters demand a different skill set than traditional, 2D fighting games, and you have to be okay with getting your ass beat while you develop it.

RoA2 might actually be the best fighting game on the market at the moment, but obviously it's a platform fighter - so for many fighting game players there's a big, fat asterisk appended to that suggestion. It also attracts a lot of hatred because 1.) anthropomorphic animal characters and 2.) it isn't Smash, but

I just picked up SF6 actually. Fighting games are a lot more fun when you stop thinking about your rank or whatever bullshit and just focus on learning one thing at a time and enjoying the sense of improvement you get as you slowly integrate new improvements into your game. Most people can't play fightan because they're so used to single player games giving them the overwhelming advantage. Fighting games will check your ego IMMEDIATELY as soon as you play against another person, even in shitter ranks if you are new to the genre.

I think, "i want to run up and punch him," so I try to move but my character is so slow, so I dash instead but then they punch me in the face, which leads to a combo and me not being able to move at all for a couple seconds. The correct thing to do is wiggle back and forth trying to bait an opening such that your opponent has been placed at the edge of one of your attack animation's hitboxes (no other genre calls them that, just the FGC) which you have of course memorized because characters move in very specific, rigid ways regardless of how you feel like they should be able to.

And at that point I feel like I'm playing a board game, not fighting someone.
