Theres these VN segments when your not in the dungeon that are kinda persona-y were you make friends while neglecting others due to time. Theres like 9 or more ways to respond to each question and I feel this part of the game is extremly well done and no two peoples social choices and friends they make will never bee the same. If you get stuck on a puzzle you might just have to dig your heels and figure it out as guides are spare. I actually uploaded the only full playthrough of it on youtube since its release

I was super addicted to this and got all the way to the third dungeon (didn't spend a cent btw) but ended up ditching it because of how frustrating it felt to know nothing would ever move forward. Because its a gacha none of the story will ever be resolved, none of the characters can develop, there is never an "end". Part of the appeal of a dungeon crawler is getting to the end of the dungeon but this game just gave me perpetual blue balls. Some really good designs tho, I just wish it was more like the PS2 Wizardry games and not a gacha.

Its a longplay so its not as user friendly a a guide. Youll have to seek and hunt down where your stuck. played it on Hard and everything 1-2 shots you. The 160hours it took me, playing it on normal probably couldve shaved off 1/3 of that playtime. Puzzles are reading Jap mythology and the games throws you a riddles where you gotta use the mythology lore + inventory items to figure out what to do. The lore was kinda hard to follow because all the jap folklore heroes have names that blur together after a while. Ame-no-hime, Hime-no-abe etc

>it doesnt reward exploring.
Not entirely true. Upgrades to Jack's gun are found by exploring and they're impactful, even unlocking a new character and dungeon at max level. iirc character events tied to endings took place in the dungeon sometimes too. And there's gameplay benefits tied to prolonging stays in the dungeon with the roulette wheel and dungeon growth stuff, but obviously the loot rewards are always garbage like the 600th Ration or Sword you have but weaker.

There are mini stories for every dungeon but the overall story (who is the masked adventurer, who is lulunarde, what is their connection, what is the wheel, etc) hasn't progressed at all since launch. And it doesn't matter how the stories of each dungeon resolve since characters keep coming back later, so Elmond of dying or etc.

Because personality presets really limit the characters that you can create in the game, you might as well just have full fledged characters with more interactions in the world. Having no voice lines except maybe the typical grunts/callouts leaves room for imagination to create anything in the narrative, whereas the preset option leaves you with only variations of a few predetermined archetypes. It can obviously work for some games, but it is a much more narrow option that will appeal to less people.

>Legend of Grimrock 1 and 2

an ambitious dungeon crawler for the Sega Saturn set in the Shining Force universe. Does a lot of things that wouldn't be done again in the genre for more than a decade. A bit story heavy as the genre goes, not that that's a bad thing as it leads directly to the start of Shining Force III

Either you write hundreds of different character types along with tens of thousands of responses, or you settle for a small selection of archetypes with maybe a female or male option for each class if you're lucky.

now for some real time:

>King's Field
>Shadow Tower
>Eternal Ring
it's often seen as a hipster or contrarian opinion, but I honestly prefer Fromsoft's classic first person hack and slashers to the Souls formula
slow and methodical, take your time and manage your resources in these varied flavors of dark fantasy
>Space Griffon VF-9
now here's a neat one. Imagine King's Field but you're in a stompy mecha exploring a space station. Strong biomechanical horror theme
>Stonekeep
grid-based but combat is real time and you strike where you aim your mouse
many who've played the early game think of it as a single character RPG, but you get party members later

Wiz 8 has 32 personality presets and they're not class stereotyped, they're built around a personality trait and can be applied universally. Cunning, kind, eccentric, loner, brooding, short-fused, that sort of thing. There's 9 traits with two different line packs each, times two genders. Each pack is a 100 something voice clips.
Given your party size is six customs, that's plenty to have your six rogues be whoever you want and all different. It just takes effort on the dev's part.

pretty much. The first person perspective encourages imagination and a sense of the unknown. In Final Fantasy you can see a chest through several walls, in Wizardry you don't know if it's a treasure or a monster just around the corner
also encourages mapmaking, even if the game tracks it internally

I got really sick of the whole Concentrate into 3-5-7 attack combo a lot of these games have, and it's not even something exclusive to them. That shit exists in Demon Gaze and Class of Heroes also, I really don't get this sick obsession with Fighters having that shit, and then the samurais have row attacks and so on. The other thing with Experience was the whole aspect of grind rooms and grind gems, use this item to get an encounter so enemies drop specific gear. I don't need every game to be a masterpiece, but the main thing that turns me off of some of them is strict adherence to certain traditions. Have to reroll for stats because Wizardry did it. I like Stranger of Sword City because it's one of the few DRPGs that kinda encourage you to make more than a starting A-List squad. And rotate in and maintain B-team and even C-team members. So you actually feel like more of an actual "guild".

>lethality of mobs, bosses and minibosses are generally quite high
>weapon drops are abundant and randomly generated so you usually have reasonably level-appropriate gear to spare pretty much all the time (not necessary to shuffle shit around every time you swap someone out)
>recovery period between KOs (neccessasry to avoid permadeath) is really long so unless you wanna walk back and forth on the spot for hours every time someone gets knocked out, you should probably just rotate in another member of a similar role and keep exploring/progressing

But I can't stand the back half of the game where they constantly keep sealing your spells and skills for entire dungeons.

>first person multiplayer dungeon crawlers are a surprisingly untapped genre
Fucked up when you think about it. Dark and Darker had the potential to be big but the devs turned out to be actual clowns so that dream is dead.

I enjoyed Mary Skelter 2. The first game's maps were bloated and had to be remade, the third game felt like it was trying too hard with the whole forced 3 parties thing.
2 struck the best balance and had the best story.

MiA is literally the writer's EO OC Donut Steel adventure, he doesn't even hide it. He straight up explicitly says that AND asks you to play the games

"NINJAS could be here" he thought, "I've never been on this floor before. There could be NINJAS anywhere." The cool Dalto felt good against his bare chest. "I HATE NINJAS" he thought. KATINO reverberated his entire party, making them fall asleep even as the 50g healing potion circulated through his powerful thick veins and washed away his (merited) fear of decapitation after reaching the prerequisites for Lord. "With a blue ribbon, you can go anywhere you want" he said to himself, out loud.

It’s always been drpg or dungeon crawler to me. Blobber is a gay reddit meme term.

Nobody uses that term. There's this rpg maker general on /vrpg/ and it's turned into this sort of retarded launchpad for raiding and shitting up other boards. Board needs to be deleted.
