I think that the trend for games have forgotten about the "rules" and instead focus on the bigger picture of experience. Strong visual and sound design are cheaper to do than gameplay (e.g. this stupid video making rounds) since what looks good is more obvious than what plays good, and many of the executives that greenlight projects and act as cheerleaders for the developers probably don't play video games anyways so they literally do not understand how important play is part of the experience.
