I'm genuinely so angry at the remake of the meaning of his tears and Vader Eloha in general, it sounds like a generic boss theme and a stupid attempt to make her seem "regal". Its overly slow at the start and when the drums kick in it loses all the coldness and emptiness the original had in droves. Toby tries to compensate by adding in some weird choir singing but it just doesn't work and makes it so unlike the original. Just because she's named the queen doesn't mean she should have a regal theme, the whole point of the original was less of "fighting the queen of the world" and more "a woman is desperately trying to stop a psycho from murdering her and her pseudo son" and Toby failed at figuring that out.

Just beat Enoch, I'm not sure if it's because I'm playing the game with an additional 12 years of experience playing JRPGs or because the mechanics changed but the bosses feel substantially easier. The music is worse but I don't think anyone on the planet could have replaced the originals in a satisfying way. Not sure why they replaced the Dedan voice line but honestly that was much worse to me. Overall I'm pleasantly surprised with how little they changed outside the music, it could have gone much worse than this

I think the fact it's also releasing on console (well, Switch at least, who knows if they'll bother porting it anywhere else) on top of adding new official languages to it (notably, Japanese) means they're also just generally aiming to introduce more people to it. Maybe Toby'll shill it on Nintendo Dream or something like that in Japan when the update for extra languages is released, could help build up a fanbase over there.

Being more charitable, I can't fault new kids for wanting to get into these games yet struggling to vibe with the isolating aspect of it due to how they're always connected to the internet, but it always feels like they can only ever see it as the definitive way to play without considering the actual intent behind games like Yume Nikki. (I have similar gripes with how much people push EasyRPG)

On that note, is it even worth trying Collective Unconscious? It being designed exclusively for online really puts me off it because I can only imagine every world and area is designed to be purely a comfy hangout spot, and assumedly has some esoteric methods of getting to them to encourage exclusivity.

EasyRPG is just a tool, nothing more. It is better in the vast majority of circumstances.
As for collective unconscious...the map design and art is very nice. As an experience overall though, it's terrible. You know how many caution signs are present in 2kki right now? Multiply that by five. Dead ends fucking everywhere. There's a few places with too many benches here and there along with the emote function that make the fact that it was intended to be MP apparent. That said, it's not to a distracting extent.

When the OST mod hits, definitely pirate it and give it a try.

There's nothing bad about using EasyRPG. Its a fantastic little tool. Beyond bypassing the need to do japlocale stuff, it fixes an issue where on some computers for some reason, rpgm games made with 2k and 2k3 will run really laggy when in fullscreen mode.
The only downside of EasyRPG is if the game was made using patches that aren't supported by the player, it can lead to some weird shit happening. Otherwise, there's no reason to not use it imo.

Objectively how much money Mortis even receives from sales? I'm under impression he is getting something like 50% while other 50% goes to Fangamer. + feels like Mortis already got paycheck ahead of release from Fangamer around remake announcement, since it's Fangamer who approached Mortis about remake.
So as it is, it's mostly Fangamer's interest to sell the game, so they can break even and sell merch alongside it. They notified Toby and Nightmargin to make soundtrack ( probably out of some obligations ) and they were the one to advertise and talk about it publicly. Mortis did loke 1 stream on announcement and 1 appearance during indie game presentations. No one even made an interview with Mortis to knowledge. All interviews are with project lead from Fangamer.

So as it stands, failure to advertise is Fangamer's failure, not Mortis or Toby's, because they're the once that needed it the most.

RPG Maker 2003's battle system is infamously finnicky and hard to work with, so I'd expect the new fights to be tweaked slightly

Having played the remake I can say its encounter design pales in comparison to NEW. For one, NEW has no random encounters (except for when riding a pedalo), but on top of that enemies have actual AI to them that can be exploited and challenge you without needing to take away your own arsenal to artifically inflate the difficulty.
Take Ivius for example, his moveset pressures you into playing fast and well, while also rewarding you for paying attention. He has a move called "Reload" which isn't just a turn wasting move. He's actually refreshing his CP. If you have the skill that lets you drain his CP, you can force him to reload significantly more often, giving you more free turns to do as you please. Compare that to Cob who will just take away your Competence AND Item commands, which does nothing but drag the fight on longer than it needs to. The remake is dogshit, fangames stay winning despite Mortis quietly seething that people are making them.

It has example screenshots for a reason. It's making sure what's being said is actually what's being said instead of localizing it. Other than that, the most contentious thing in retrospect is that the final fight when you control the Judge has The Batter accompanied by his Add-Ons, which is only contentious in that the remake didn't add them back in at all despite his scan in-game saying they're there. Make of that what you will.

Basically it does more of a translating than "localisation". So skills and not competences. So no sailor Dedan as well. That said, it fixes some stupid things like calendars and it give some level of rebalancing. I dunno if remake or this version is harder. The idea was probably that Valerie getting too attached to you is what dooms him, so you need to keep your distance to make sure he doesn't worry about you and dive headfirst into danger.
