I really am starting to turn on keywording. Maybe it's the wave of cars games that need to find a 100 difference ways to say battle cry / cleave but I've seen this leak over into other games. Either you have to vaguely vibe out what it does (which I can admit is sometimes fun) or it's tooltip spam.
The Shiren games are some of the best/worst for this. Because until 4 where you could hit down in a item detail to see what "grounded" meant you had to vague it out. There's just a difference with Shiren between getting random bullshit killed and getting killed because you thought that grounded men land you couldn't be moved, instead of it meaning you can't pick up items.

One of the worst offenders for that sort of thing has to be energy vs ballistic weapons in Fallout 4. Though it's essentially the same figures being worked with the way the damage calculation is done results in ballistic weapons being suited for high powered attacks while energy weapons are more suited for low powered attacks, i.e. sniper for ballistic weapons, rapid-fire for energy weapons. The game gives no indication of this and will happily let you make high powered energy based sniper rifles even though they suck terribly at that. Because it's a calculation done on hit the weapon damage indicators don't take it into account and display inappropriate figures. It's basically treated as a bug by the community though it is debatable as to whether this was intentional or not. Fallout 76 changed the way the calculation is done but Bethesda has never changed it for Fallout 4 despite numerous patches and being aware of it so it might actually be intentional even though it doesn't make much sense. If it's a bug it's a really big bug to have not fixed. Bethesda fixed far lesser bugs than this and it's not like it's a hard bug to fix. It's just changing a damage calculation. Probably just a single line of code.

They refuse to implement the ability to mouse over/tap a colored phrase to see what an effect does. Which with how old Fire Shart Heroes is, I don't blame them. Imagine the amount of nightmarish spaghetti that would introduce.
Limbus for example, even with implementing this sort of thing early, still runs into issues where a certain word shows up in older kits and ends up accidentally placing a new keyword in older kits. It doesn't actually change anything but it's confusing when it does happen.

Getting a few monk levels for some of their feats is the meta in those games. But yeah unarmed is good in pathfinder. It's not like other games where unarmed is a joke.
In its most basic form it's about getting 999 attacks and stacking damage bonuses on each hit. A +1 here, a 1d6 there, and every time you get another attack you're multiplying your power.
Then there's other memes that activate on touch. Like the Lich mythic path gets a thing that deals 1 STR damage with each unarmed strike.

Main downside of monk is that they need a little of every stat, so people try and build them to use different stats e.g. Scaled Fist to use CHA instead of WIS, dex-to-damage feats so they can dump STR, etc.

Chinese has a lot of shit like this, most Chinese idioms are just 4 characters long. For example the Chinese equivalent of "to shut the barn door after the horse has bolted" is 亡羊補牢 (dead sheep mend pen)

except it usually throws you a bone at Lv5(out of 10) instead of completely end-loading it at Lv10
unless it's a skill that only goes to 5, then there's a chance of it having either balanced progression or at least only being five levels vs. ten to get the better multiplier/whatever
also your case is better, at least there's a tangible and strong benefit waiting at the end vs. +24 damage and nothing but

This is fine if those weird descriptors are a consistent part of the game. If so, then that just means the item is explaining in detail specifically how it does more damage so that you can use something else in situations where it isn't the most effective item you have, which creates a higher skill ceiling for the game.

If those descriptors aren't normal mechanics, then yeah, that's pretty lame, but I don't think I've ever played a video game that did that. It reminds me of when Matt Mercer makes a subclass for D&D, though. Every subclass he makes has some kind of resource you can do multiple things with and you get more if you meet some special condition or something like that, and it just sounds so silly when you read it out straight. I like it when characters in-game basically play a minigame of their own to solve problems, that can be cool, but RPGs are supposed to be immersive. Like, you play an RPG to feel like you're actually bringing this character to life. If they're constantly gaining and spending imaginary resources by appealing to arbitrary rules, that's immersion-shattering. Everyone's staring at you like, "Why the fuck is he dancing in place? Just swing your sword at the fucking monster." But then the monster explodes into bursts of flames and all the NPCs should be reacting like One Piece characters.

The character is protected by Wheel of Destiny. Divine: Banishing Ten Miseries SEQ 3 can trigger Stardust Flash. Each time Divine: Banishing Ten Miseries hits, gains Odd Thought that is capped at 3.
While Wheel of Destiny is activated:
● Characters protected by Wheel of Destiny in Stellar Outburst can trigger Jovial Deception: Shadowdimmer's Phantom support attack, causing the characters on the field to deal 1,200% ATK of Adaptive DMG (counts as Shadow Star Attack DMG) and granting them 11s of Rondo in the Shadows.
● In Stellar Outburst:
○ Standby characters cannot be switched in and they're replaced by Phantoms to aid in battle.
○ Tapping her teammates' avatar summons a Phantom that launches a support attack, dealing 100% x 4 ATK of Physical DMG (counts as Shadow Star Attack DMG). This also causes the character to unleash Shadow Star Attack, which deals 120% ATK of Physical DMG. After that, the character becomes invincible, and recovers all Odd Thought. After unleashing, the character gains 5s of Rondo in the Shadows. When Stellar Outburst ends, it removes Rondo in the Shadows.
○ In Rondo in the Shadows state, Divine: Banishing Ten Miseries generates a Phantom that deals 85% x 2 ATK of Physical DMG, and Weapon Skill generates a Phantom that deals 170% ATK of Physical DMG (counts as Shadow Star Attack DMG).

You need to know whether the ammo is a common loot well distributed in various areas relatively to how often you would use the weapons that relies on this ammo if you made it default weapon. You need this meta-knowledge on top of needing to know whether the weapon that uses this ammo is any good. If that skill is good you need to take it right there right now when available because if you realize it's good halfway in the game you'll be missing on all the ammo you'd have gotten if you got it early when you should have. But maybe the balance team trolled you because the ammo isn't rare or the weapon is severely outclassed by others, who knows? Just roll the dice, bro.

One thing PoE did right for attempting to prevent description bloat (no no keep reading) was to globalize the simple keyword "recently affected by" to always mean "in the last 4 seconds". This is a good decision that a lot of games could copy. The concept of "recently" could have been defined differently between skills, with different duration windows like 3.5 seconds or 4.5 seconds, but why not make it a flat number and make it shared by all skills and always refer to it by same word? That way players can transfer their sense of timing from one skill to another.

With that said, I am now obligated to mention that aside from doing correctly this one specific thing, PoE has a shitload of description bloat that I won't bother defending at all. Even a broken clock is right twice a day etc etc. Their "recently affected by" is a fixed time constant but "nearby enemy" isn't a fixed distance. Holy shit why.

i feel like it's a lot more complicated when it comes to nearby because now you having to universally balance prolif and auras and idk whatever else spreads shit while being in a certain proximity of X. nearby is just the easier way of explaining that whatever your doing is going to be passively affecting things around it and they can still make adjustments on what that means on a skill by skill basis. cause it doesn't really make sense for like poison spread to have the same amount of range as something like an intimidate aura

I feel like they could easily have used two global terms here, "nearby" for standard aura range and "adjacent" for proliferation when enemies are within melee range of each other. I don't even mind if the game offers a way to modify these default values, like a keystone for bonus range on nearby or prolif. The important part is that when you simplify and globalize some of these mechanics it decreases description bloat but more importantly it means your playstyle from one character/build can transfer to another if you can use the same time/distance estimations. So I agree they couldn't use "nearby" for every single mechanic but they could have done better I'm sure.

Ring of Gwanja analysis: its effects is triggered when you gain Mojo until it reaches the Bazinga Threshold, therefore it should be paired with cursed items that penalize Bazinga and reduce the maximum threshold. The value should optimally be decreased down to 1 so that Ayabaya damage is inflicted with every swing. The player should avoid decreasing their threshold down to zero since it does not mean the Ring of Gwanja will be permanently in effect. As per item description, the extra damage is unleashed when the players reaches maximum, not when the player is currently sitting at maximum. Being always at 0 or 100 Bazinga will do nothing, the player must oscillates between 0 and 1. Since the triggered effects scales based on enemy Juju score, the player should consider investing in the anti-reverse curse aura mechanic to increases the Mojo score of enemies, thus dramatically increasing Ayabaya damage done against them. Lastly, the item mentions swinging your weapon but not hitting. Simply equip the fastest dagger weapon in the game and stab wildly at empty air to inflict ayabaya-elemental damage to all enemies on screen.

True, but poison itself is more an afterthought. You could do the same with stun, paralysis etc. etc. The idea is that poison as a DoT is basically worthless, because it either A. doesn't do enough damage or B doesn't effect the majority of targets.

I think most Souls games do it the worst. Poison hurts YOU far more than it does any enemy because it wastes your resources to cure it. The enemies don't care about being poisoned and the damage dealt from poison is so low it's barely a problem. Meanwhile Scarlet Rot in ER is marginally better because it takes percentage health from the target instead of a flat amount. Suddenly there's a poison worth using against bosses but it's STILL painfully slow to kill it's targets and it's not as widely available as the standard poison.

It's a really mind-boggling strategy. In the Art of War, Sun Tzu wrote in big shiny red letters that laying siege to a city is the worst strategy of all time, the one thing you want to avoid the most during a military campaign due to logistic issues ruining all your momentum. Obviously you can't walk your men across plains and rivers and mountains and still expect to have food in the bank that outlasts the locals, their pantry is full and yours is running out. You can raid the land, but the locals know better than you where to get those resources and already took as much they could before you arrived, so you're naturally at complete disadvantage. Normally, that's how it goes. Sun Tzu wasn't a poetic or metaphorical writer, he just laid out the basic facts of what is a stupid thing to do in war and said "don't fucking do that". Meanwhile, Caesar acted like you can just go camping indefinitely with an army and start playing minecraft. He blocked the enemy reinforcement AND didn't let them block his massive chain of supplies. Somehow.

I think Sun Tzu also didn't grasp something that Clausewitz did much later in that you can't separate politics and war. War is an extension of the politic of nations, which also means that just because you know you can win a fight doesn't mean the enemy is just going to lie down and accept defeat. You have to actually beat your opponent down to the point where fighting is no longer possible or they simply lose the will to continue fighting at all. So while Sun Tzu may say sieges are dumb and a waste of resources, leaving it unmolested is essentially telling your enemy they can keep retreating there and recuperate until they're ready to try again. Hannibal should've sieged Rome after Cannae and didn't, and it was the worst decision he could've made.

I'm not familiar with Clausewitz but Sun Tzu was strongly in favor of winning wars cost-effectively. The ideal scenario was always, according to him, to win without fighting. He argued it was devastating to fight your enemies when they have their back against the wall. If you completely corner them, they'll fight to the death. If they have a small escape tunnel, they will slowly retreat and won't fight to the death, and therefore you can win the same campaign with less casualties if you give them chances. Sieging a city is the ultimate act of pushing your enemies against the wall, which is why it sucks on the deepest level. Your foes have maximum advantage and tenacity. They know they'll autowin at equal skill, equal luck, equal army size and equal resources, people invest in those big walls for that reason. Which is why Sun Tzu says, skip this bullshit. Can't attack someone directly? Take out their allies. Disrupt their alliance. Make their allies turn on them and join you. Win diplomatically. The big undefeatable dude hiding behind walls will give up when you're done converting everyone to your side. Don't just park in front of their walls and die.

>Hannibal should've sieged Rome
People give shit to Hannibal but I want to be lenient on the guy. Could he do it? Just walk over Rome and tah-dah? Why assume it'd work? It certainly doesn't feels like HE assumed it. Aren't his men completely beaten and bruised, isn't Rome intact? From his perspective, it was probably the smartest move to not commit himself to a siege right away. He probably computed 1% chance of victory in direct siege and 3% chance if he waited. Some bullshit bad odds like that. He chose his odds, he gambled and lost, and he probably wasn't surprised at all. His options sucked and he was gonna lose embarrassingly anyway, nearly guaranteed, because his country really fucked him over not sending support.

>Take out their allies. Disrupt their alliance. Make their allies turn on them and join you
It's funny that you bring this up in the context of Sun Tzu because that's literally what Hannibal was going for. He knew that his only way to beat Rome was to cut them off from their Italian allies, because Rome's unique strength was their ability to tank losses by conscripting new armies from across their various territories and is the source of Pyrrhus's famous quote.
The USSR during WW2 wouldn't be an unreasonable comparison.

Yes and no. When Hannibal took Cannae he probably picked the hard-but-correct choice that would've made Sun Tzu cry tears of joy. However I can imagine Sun Tzu immediately going "wait what the FUCK" watching Hannibal spent what, 14 years on the boot-shaped peninsula, without hardly any military activity? Just sitting and waiting. The way I interpret it, Hannibal was thinking.

"I won. I can't engage in a siege right now, but they can't kick me out, so I autowin. My country just needs to sends waves after waves of ships full of soldiers and I'll greet them at the shore, take those soldiers, surround Rome, and it'll be ours. This is how it ends. Everyone knows it's what's coming. Those ships are surely on their way. They are coming... Any second now... I'll wait a month... A year... Another year? Shiiiit, I did everything I could, my country just needs to secure the win, what are these fuckers DOING back home..."

What were they doing? Making him lose the war for no reason, apparently. Well not no reason, there was some complex political backstabbing going on or whatever. Still, sucks for the dude.

Tanks in Guild Wars 1 worked like that, except the growing part. Enemy ai was coded to always attack targets in ranges with the lowest armor ratings, so heavily armoured high physical damage resistant players would never be targets if there are casters nearby, so you had two choices:
>only tank is within aggro range of any enemies and after he's done collecting foes, casters and healers nuke it from max possible distance
>tanks line up around a corner during a pull around a corner to create a "steel wall" of bodies that monsters run into and catch onto
