God, why? I put over 100 hours into both of the games and they're honestly awful gameplay wise. Just time wasters with boring easy combat until you randomly forget to heal the main character team and they die making you restart the whole 2 hour chapter again.

No offense to you, anon, but why? What reason do you have for it because it's just a game that is carried heavily by character interactions and music over anything else and that can't *just* be why you like it? Is it?

I actually fully agree regarding PXZ1, which while technically shorter than 2 in terms of chapters is an utter slog with dull repetitive combat mechanics and bloated, annoying encounter design (I swear the chapter that drops four clones of Nemesis on you and then reveals the title of the chapter is just "Nemesis" is a sick joke) and an oddly mediocre OST outside of a few tracks because of the weak soundfont (with some exceptions like the Gain Ground remix). It's very much like Namco X Capcom in that way except that NXC's twice as long and has even less engaging combat.

PXZ2 on the other hand fixes basically every issue I have with the series to some degree even if it's not perfect:
>Chapters are overall better-paced; despite an extra chapter the game takes like 2-3 hours less to beat than 1
>Splitting SP & XP so that each unit can use their skills without eating into your team's XP alongside the addition of Side/Back attacks allows you to actually strategize a little instead of
>Cross Freeze rework with Cross Breaks alongside Mirage Cancels & Red Mirage Cancels give you WAY more ways to improve and optimize combo routes instead of just mashing out everything during one long Cross Freeze like in 1; using capture states or well-placed sandwiching to go straight from a Cross Break into a Cross Freeze without the launch feels fantastic
>Massively improved music, including tracks from Yuzo Koshiro
>Challenge Maps genuinely require some thought and mastery of the systems to clear unless you do them way overleveled
>The fanservice is off the charts even with a number of things missing from 1; Segata Sanshiro alone is incredible
I've cleared the game, done NG+ & NG++, and cleared every Challenge Map at least twice, I have over 250 hours in PXZ2 alone, and I feel like I'm going to replay it within the year (despite playing it for the first time only 2 years ago). Meanwhile you'd have to pay me to even touch 1 again.

I love AvP and pretty much every other Capcom 90s beat-em-up, I've even 1CC'd Mighty Final Fight which a lot of people overlook. But SoR2 is a really great game that builds off of the solid baseline of the original and while 4 is a little more mechanically bloated it's extremely fun with an insane amount of replay value due to all the characters and modes. There's some bullshit i-frames on some enemies in 2 (particularly the ninjas' Blanka balls and half the shit Souther and his recolors do) but I can't think of many great beat-em-ups that don't have some level of bullshit.

>Surprisingly solid platformer all-around.
Its more than that. Like the closest thing I've ever played to a Perfect Game, and I used to think that was Hollow Knight. It had everything, puzzles, traversal, some basic mental mapping level design, particularly with the level where youre going up and down elevators, but other levels have it too. And it also makes sure to try and incorporate all its gameplay elements together, so youre rarely just puzzling and/or platforming, but youll do both at the same time or in sequence. And theyll even incorporate combat into that a bit to be sort of part of the puzzle of "how do I get past multiple enemies that cover different weaknesses". The most obvious ways it does this is with the moments where it makes you turn the wrench to open the doors. You have to keep turning it, but if you get hit you stop, its a more natural way to do the "lock you in a room and fight enemies" than zelda does because youre an active participant in fulfilling that goal of "getting out" since youre always immediately aware of how you logically can. The game also is good about closing off site lines with platforms etc.

And to top it all off the boss fights are genuinely amazing, not just for how they challenge you, but the abundantly varied ways they do.

No joke, if Celeste didnt exist, it might be my favourite game. But Celeste just does one thing waaaaay too well that it is utterly unmatched by any indie game ever.

And I said all of this without even getting into the truly unique factor about Iconoclasts.

About the chests and rewards. I never particularly care about rewards in games. I sought out almost every skulltula in Master of Time well past the time I was getting anymore rewards, because the endeavor was simply fun. Unfortunately Iconoclasts world design isnt interconnected enough for that to work and you get fasy travel much late into the game.
Anonymous No.718285781 >>718286505

This is a whole lot of words to say absolutely nothing about why you like the games.
Anonymous No.718286068
But I wont knock it for not making searching for side shit interesting as most games suck at that, and the games praised for that shit like OoT and Totk are horrible at it and even worse about rewards, the former especially. So its easy to get burnt out on it.

When you play so many bad games, and its so hard to come across a game that can do more than one thing, so that if you ever have problems with some aspect of gameplay it atleast has something else to offer? Is INCREDIBLY hard for games to do.

Iconoclasts is like a 4/5 in everything. And even games that do one thing better, like Isle of Sea and Sky that I recently played did puzzles slightly better just by sheer amount, and variety about as equal. It faltered BLATANTLY in other aspects like its backtracking creating dull time where youd interact with a bunch of puzzles you never knew whether you could solve yet or not, creating dead time where youre just doing nothing and being frustrated by an aimless design where you can interact with nothing and offered nothing in the way of bosses or combat/platforming.

See? even a good game, great game like that which also almost revived my faith in videogames doing one thing really well, wasnt able to trump icono.

Thats also what makes Celeste so great. That it was able to focus on one thing and develop on and improve on it at every single progressive turn of the game. Icono only gets better too with the puzzles and bosses. And it was actually towards the end of the game when I was mad about something in it, and then it just completely redeemed itself in the next breath which no game has EVER been able to do for me. That i became a believer in its greatness.

Story is garbage and retarded tho and killed off almost every interesting character, and the main character is a literal retarded autist that just coasts through every problem like a shonen protagonist.
Anonymous No.718286084 >>718287043
>>718283808
Hmm, interesting. I guess for me I played through 1 and 2 around 2018 and 2019 basically spending a whole year going through it in random intervals and finding it so boring everytime. Most fights just became

>20 enemies spawn in
>cutscene
>2 turns
>20 more enemies spawn in
>cutscene
>3 turns
>30 more enemies spawn in
>cutscene
>finally the chapter has *actually* started

And then I just spend the whole time mashing and mashing. You say PXZ2 had improvements to gameplay but I honestly never noticed, although I did notice the fewer characters which was a shame. Funny thing is, if that got a sequel with even MORE characters. I'd probably play it.

>(I swear the chapter that drops four clones of Nemesis on you and then reveals the title of the chapter is just "Nemesis" is a sick joke)
Nah, the actual fucking sick joke is making Phoenix and Maya a "joint"-solo unit. Fucking bullshit. I was so mad at that I made sure they fucking killed the final boss. I even recorded it on my phone pointed directly at the 3DS since I wanted to remember it.

Still, I'm happy someone enjoys it for more than the characters and interactions. Hopefully it does get a sequel on Switch or something.

>SoR2 feels like everything about its characters and enemies is intentionally designed; the differences in range, damage, throws, Back attacks, Blitz, Specials, weapons (3 does more with this but Blaze having better Knife use than the guys alone helps differentiate how you approach a playthrough with her), enemy movement, the way they put enemies together, it's all very precise without being complex. The presence of a single Signal or Donovan in a group can change how you approach a room for example. The scoring system also rewards you for riskier plays which feeds into extra lives and helps your 1cc attempts. All that plus good spritework and one of the best OSTs of all time. Fuck the ninjas though, and I wish it was more clear when grab priority goes to enemies over you.
>SoR4's combo system is pretty open-ended and fluid with decent risk-reward owing to the green life system and the combo scoring. While I'm not a huge fan of the focus on making every level something you can string one combo along start to finish rather than having a more constant choice of whether to cash out or not, it gets the job done. Each character feels extremely distinct, the retro characters are a great touch, most of the bosses are fun fights, the extra moves and insane encounters in the DLC added a lot of mileage to an already large game, the Versus and Training modes are nice ways to vary things up, and I like the artstyle overall. Also "They're Back" is one of Yuzo's best tracks.

Phoenix & Maya are actually extremely useful in 2 overall since not all Guardbreak Solo Attacks are created equal, and theirs does the vast majority of the Guard damage at the start with that Psyche Lock while others spread it out or even backload it which is way worse (and one of the reasons Ingrid sucks). They also have pretty good skills overall and their attack generally keeps enemies pretty still during juggles which makes for easy Cross Break setups; I paired them Kazuya & Jin a lot since those two can shit damage but have a tough time against high Guard enemies.
>You say PXZ2 had improvements to gameplay but I honestly never noticed
To be honest you can absolutely play 2 like 1 and get by, but it will take longer which is probably why you had a similar experience. Optimizing your damage keeps 2 more engaging AND helps you get through it more smoothly, and that stacks on replays where you get more passive skill slots and can get the best gear for your units in Challenge Map chests. I got to the point where my NG++ run was also a "buy nothing from the shop" run. My 4th playthrough will probably be a fresh NG shopless run (or at least no consumables from the shop).
>I did notice the fewer characters which was a shame.
For me 2's biggest downside against 1 is that it scrapped every single Capcom solo unit from 1, particularly Batsu, Lady & Arthur. Captain Commando helps make up the difference but Ingrid really fucking sucks (AND the game forces you to use her against a boss in one of the lategame chapters), also Leon being his RE6 self due to the timing of the game's development is a bit lame too even though he's otherwise a great addition.

The whole chart is great but these are particularly based. I have to ask though: why Metal Slug 3D/PS2? It's the only non-mobile game in the series I've never played but even the more positive takes I've seen about it aren't exactly lavishing.

>The scoring system also rewards you for riskier plays which feeds into extra lives and helps your 1cc attempts
But the scoring system in SoR2 is really bad and broken. You get more points from just spamming throws then you do punching, which makes the game incredibly tedious if you even cared about that, and beyond that its so incredibly broken its possible to even max score.
>SoR4's combo system is pretty open-ended
What does this even mean lol

>How do I make one like this without photoshop?
I use imagemagick. The command is something like this:
magick montage 1.png 2.png 3.png 4.png 5.png 6.png 7.png 8.png 9.png -geometry +0+0 -tile 3x3 -strip 10.png
That takes nine input files and makes a 3x3 montage without borders, and strips the metadata. I resize them all first.
