AVP2 did 1 thing correctly which AVP1, AVP2010 not even Colonial Marines did ...

It copied the same atmosphere, structure and script of ALIENS and even when it added a Predator in the first 2 sections of the first mission it never came off as jarring, cringe worthy and immersion breaking. The predator actually adds to the butt clenching atmosphere, fake screams, people dying around you and you somehow surviving, it doesn't destroy the game like you'd expect when Colonial Marines shoved Weyland Yutani troopers down your throat.

1999 was scarier but very unbalanced campaign wise and lacking in level design
2001 while it doesn't feel like neither Alien nor Aliens it does instead feel a lot like the better series of comics books by Dark Horse, speaking thematically of course.

What AVP2 did right (not Primal Hunt) was that it offered a passable, fun and entertaining gameloop. It respected the structure of both first and 2nd films.

Alien takes you through the lifecycle and playing as the Alien feels like an action game. Mindless but fun.

Almost every single Alien game refused or didn't know how to copy the Alien & Aliens structure and Aliens 1986 style.

Every single Marine campaign including Colonial Marines has the Alien pop up in your face too soon and without any fakeouts. Fakeouts are very important and so is atmosphere; the tension, which AVP2 doesn't lack.


In 1999 the Alien pretty much pops up in your face and there is no tension, fakeouts. The atmosphere is just pure horror as you're forced through the space jockey ship and narrow corridors from the 1st section.

Colonial Marines has you go through for a measly 5 minutes through a spaceship through a a nest saving some dumbass marine you never heard of and your first encounter is with a Lurker inside a nest and then numerous aliens before a dumbass marine blows himself up and a bunch of weyland yutani mercs and some more aliens show up.

In 2010 they outright start counting down , completely destroying the element of surprise.

Ironically AVP2's lack of proper AI helped it by making you go alone and always be secluded from your team, since anyway better no team than what you get in Colonial Marines.

It's the weakest cause it doesn't attempt to do anything serious like setting up your hive, controlling drones, mutating, etc. cause otherwise it would turn into a completely different game that many don't like.
Just like the Predator section often feels like a combo of action and a bit of exploration but there is never any hunt, no pursuing beyond scripted events.

Anything more intelligent would attract a different audience with different standards. Action is much easier to do correctly for a gameloop compared to stealth games.

Because if you want something smarter then is your ADHD brain willing to deal with the cons of a smarter game such as the puzzle elements?

Study the patrol groups, find a weak link, devise a plan. Who actually wants to devise a plan which isn't fed to them and told step by step what to do? Predator stealth works because it's not environmental and even if the Predator screws up his stealth he still gets to kill everything with no game over. Most people who played AVP2 had the campaigns already unlocked or never had to replay the beginning of the Alien section ever again WITH QUICK SAVES.
But Monolith also did a good job with the stealth sections unlike Third Law Interactive, so in the original campaign you know where to go and even if you get spotted you don't instantly die, you can just run past the last section, you don't get a game over when the civilian pulls the alarm like in most stealth games.

So the campaigns being simplistic is actually for the better. It appeals to everyone that way.

AVP2010 actually did a good job with the disc by allowing you to move it wherever you want as opposed to AVP2 where once its launched it goes on its own and will often get stuck in any terrain unless you're lucky and it hits metal every single time to bounce off of it.

Concrete Jungle is the best Predator game ever made. It has a fun setting with plenty of varied enemies to fight, and you get a giant arsenal of hunting tools to pick from. You should be able to play as the Carrier xenomorph and chug like 30 facehuggers at your opponent. The problem is always playing as just 1 alien when you should be playing as 30 different types of alien by choice, luckily cheats & mods fix this.

A future alien game could instead go like the Unreal Tournament and Rayman M series where it willingly accepts singleplayer tournament campaigns like you're playing multiplayer but against bots and you got to do differing challenges on the same map before unlocking new maps.

The only reason they didn't dome the alien on the Nostromo was to keep its blood from melting through the hull, and even when the aliens don't have that advantage they still kick the marines' asses pretty hard (although I will concede that half of the deaths are due to Spunkmeyer pissing)

I just watched Covenant again and it's super fucking underrated.
Pretty much everything starting with the Backburster scene up until they get back on the Covenant after Daniels defeats the first real Xeno with the crane claw, is pure unadulterated Kino.
It's at its worst when it feels like a dumb slasher film, which you kinda get when the crew is milling around in the intro after James Franco gets toasted, and again at the end with the annoying shower sex scene and rote "blast another xeno out the airlock" ending.
But then it comes back right at the end with David saying goodnight to Daniels. One of the best endings to a horror film in the past 20 years at least.

Probably the most Aliens of the missions copying Aliens step by step also the longest having 4 parts and lasting an entire hour even when you do know where to go. Seamlessly adds the Predator to the formula without feeling out of place.

The sewer level but without water. Tries to do Unwelcome Guests 2.0 Nostromo in sewer but it's too short of a level to do the whole build up correctly.

Literally Die Hard 1 / Half Life 1, every single indoors FPS about shooting humans and ocassionally a few aliens.

After this the levels become really short. It starts suffering from RPG syndrome where 60% of the game was well paced and then it starts rushing towards the end skipping entire areas.

Sewer but actually scary with no lights and instead full of water. The Praetorian part was nice but it could have been better like in Colonial Marines ironically.

Decent setpieces if only you fought outside to get a sense of scale.

Cheat codes could make the game replayable by playing as exo-suit, marine, predator in each other's campaigns, except for Alien who is incompatible.

That's not confirmed, and I don't think it's necessary to interpret it that way at all.
You *could* see it that way, but very clearly in Prometheus, the black goo transforms whatever it touches into a light-skinned proto-Facehugger creature (the worms in the dirt in the pyramid chamber becoming silver snakes, Fifield becoming a pale zombie, and Shaw's infertile egg becoming the squid) - if it evolves successfully from that form and successfully impregnates a host creature, then you get a Xeno type creature like the Deacon at the end of Prometheus.

I don't think Aliens did it that badly, the xenos did a good job of ambushing the initial crew and if you consider the their location as strategic it was quite clever. Einsenberg despite holding out for 6 weeks the moment he is rescued the rescue team fails, gets killed and Einsenberg suffers similar to Rykov where he barely survives but with major injuries ... it's not clear how the hell he's even grabbed back to base and performed synthetic surgery on during the 7 year timelapse since if the team failed then how the hell did they recover him back? again it's the 1 event that's left too much to interpretation.
Rykov you can see that he survived the fall.
The Incident you can clearly see the sewage leading directly to the operations complex blew up a hole with the light predator's bomb ... and there's data pads saying they couldn't fix the hole on time.
And again Einsenberg being an asshole with the "Cut the transmission stuff, I won't let them gloat" either he was referring to the aliens or to rykov, most likely the aliens gloating.
There's also this part where the predator jumps on the airship and it's implied he crashes it since at the start of the Old Debts mission you can see the airship crashed behind you in one of the tunnels.

The AVP2 graphics are this weird transition between 98 and 2002 graphics where some things look great and some things look mediocre. This was made in 2000 when Monolith were on the verge of switching to the Jupiter engine for Tron 2.0 and NOLF 2

The resolution doesn't look blurry like NOLF1 and AVP1 , the held weapon models are very detailed. The objects are detailed.
The light is moody but it shows its weak renderer and engine.

AVP1 by comparison had better lighting and flame effects whereas AVP2 failed at those, but AVP1 had infinitely worse pixelated textures, character models and weapon models and objects that blend into the texture environment making finding a switch incredibly annoying and wasting time. I guess someone at Rebellion watched too much Scooby Doo and wanted to do the opposite of "Hey Gang you see this vividly colored but not as detailed book that stands out from the painted backgrounds? I'ma pull it"

Monolith are great at hiding the faults of their engines and making something still look good, but in the hands of those who never worked with the level editor and don't understand its cons and pros it ends up looking very bad when they use poor res texture and open spaces with no proper lighting like FEAR's expansions showed us.

Engine/renderer wise? Lithtech looks wise at best rivals GoldSource which was already 4 years old ... and falls behind badly compared to dedicated engines like the Serious engine and heavy hitters like id Tech's and Unreal's engine that already got good looking textures, flame/light/particle effects and detailed object models correctly without slowingdown and taking load times and requiring processing power 3x times more than its competition.

There's plenty of games during 2002-2004 that look like garbage made in 98-99 that still makes Unreal Tournament 3 look too good by comparison. Stuff like Medal of Honor and Call of Duty look like garbage for their time because paying for someone's engine license is out of a question for a big company. Monolith was pointing out how their fees cost very little to give their engine to somebody else to use, a lot of people were trying to make their own engines back then rather than sticking to 1 or 2 like we have now. The problem is even with a good engine if the programmers are dogshit and don't understand the engine's capabilities you get dogshit graphics that aren't well suited for your renderer. And also the fact if you want a different game entirely you need to reprogram the entire framework to stop being a FPS and be a RPG adventure game instead which requires time and proper programmers.

The Predator one is the least cringe worthy cause you're already used to get assaulted by endless hordes of xenos and your plasma caster is great at killing them
It also lets you hunt something else other than xenos for 1/20th of the campaign :/ and you get to see the aliens attacking the wildlife which Monolith wanted to add later albeit that's not the same wildlife Monolith wanted to add. The canyons still look pitiful and there are no forests.

Compared to real expansions like Starcraft Brood War, Primal Hunt is DLC at best. It feels like it was made by 1 guy and a fanmade campaign cause that's what it is ... 1 guy made it. It was basically made with a team of 10 of which that 1 guy was the main level designer and programmer and idea guy for it.

AVP1 already got a re-release in 2010 with an OpenGL renderer which enabled insanely high-detailed textures and high polygons ... well technically a fanmade mod called Redux Mod achieved the latter but not without the renderer rewrite.

You have to kill some NPC in the pods to get the grenade launcher again which is rare. Same for the shotgun. Then in the pre-final mission you get an armory unlock with all the weapons which doesn't matter since in the final mission you get in an exo suit and then lose all your weapons only to pick them up 1 by 1 while running away from the queen.

If you want you can just use cheat codes you can find online. I know I used them and for another game to get the fun weapons early on while ironically not using them a lot, I only used them for special ocassions to keep the beginner levels fresh while still having the ability to sniper rifle a bitch or two especially in the pods where you're left with nothing but a pistol.

I thought Aspyr and Crystal Dynamics did a much finer job at the Soul Reaver remasters than others since you can just press a button and it instantly flips between the remastered and classic without any loading. Take into account the AI was non functional.

That's why they moved the more experienced veterans to the team and then also put dedicated level designers who learned what kind of terrain each species can traverse and what each species can deal and can't deal with.

We’re only two episodes in so I’m still tempering my expectations. On the one hand I like the fact that they didn’t drag out the Wendy hiding her identity from her brother plotline, on the other holy fucking shit are the synthetic characters annoying. I also don’t particularly care for the xenomorph just acting like a bog standard movie monster that just slaughters its way through everyone and is making zero effort to harvest hosts for the eggs.

Probably FAPSE 2021, which stands for Frosty Aliens Predators Special Edition. It’s one single map that constantly changes as stuff happens, I enjoyed it a lot. It’s a marine campaign but I went back and used console to play it as a predator too.

The one in the OP is for cooperative play for all 3 campaigns. There's also PvP in multiplayer yes. You still need the main game for both, but co-op utilizes a separate launcher.

The Alien franchise was always about human, or better, corporate greed crossing boundaries it shouldn't have ever crossed, in its insatiable quest for always more of everything (wealth, influence, power) without any regard of the possible consquences and getting punished for that with pain, death, horror = e.g. "the alien".
The alien is a mere manifestation of this punishment.

Weyland Yutani / human corporate greed / or humankind itself has already crossed a line with playing god by creating androids and artifical intelligence.

Now that very same mistake (creating androids) in the form of David is going crazy and by chance gets the chance to create something horrible from a very misterious unknow dna altering substance called the black goo - and thus something very dangerous - the alien - is created.

So basically humankind created their own doom because they never were in full controll of their creations (and all the possible bad things that could come with it).

Is it poetic in a way? It's ever BETTER if you take into consideration that the black goo itself is probably another "line that should have never been crossed" because the Engineers themselves probably created it - and why? AGAIN, to "play god" and bring life to other planets (reference: the first scene in Prometheus).

How low of an IQ and how litte of an atristic interpreation do you need to have, to NOT find that an icreadible smart and POETIC idea?
