Because people compete as individuals with no barrier to entry, a 30 year old doesn't have to convince four teammates and a sponsor that they're better than a horde of 20 year old aspirants vying for a spot.
There's probably some decent 30 year olds in the RTS scenes for similar reasons but I don't follow those

At high level way to win is more reliant on knowledge, preparation, and mental conditioning than twitch reflex, though that can also get you far with comparatively less knowledge. I imagine RTS games could also have older top level competitors but I don't watch them.

she cute. would do whatever she wanted. and to answer your question, it's because 1v1 is the only thing that matters in competition, unless you're doing some kind of organized team event. playing with randos is almost always a recipe for failure and that's why it's not a good assessment of your personal "skill". in any one team based game, when all of your bouts are affected by a number of variables outside of your control, you just eventually shut down and stop caring because
>who fucking cares this asshole on my team is throwing and/or doesn't know how to play.

The importance of twitch reflexes are way overstated in fighting games too. Most modern games make 'reactable' stuff like 26-30f which is almost half a second. They're very granular checks and even people with slow reactions can probably react in 300ms.

Contrast that to something like an fps where you and someone could round the corner and see each other, and there's basically no lower limit on how fast you can react and it's always an advantage to be slightly faster than the other guy.

This. Top 500 in OW/MR is a big feat. Top 500 in many smaller fighting games is the entire playerbase. To be the best CS player you need to be the best out of a game with 1,300,000 daily players. To be the best SF6 player you only need to be the best out of 10,000.

A very common misconception about fighting games is that it all reactions and execution. Most moves are by design unreactable on startup. Nobody is parrying a 3f jab on reaction. There are quite a few tight reaction spaces, but they are fairly within the realm of normal reflexes and training. Game sense and spacing can also help narrow down the things you are looking for to react, which comes with experience. This is not to say that good reflexes won't help, but no amount of reflexes will help you against getting whiff punished because you tried to control space against an advancing opponent or correctly reading a series of 50/50s.

Most of the AoE2 pro scene are in their 30s afaik, and a couple in their 40s. Daut has been one of the best players in the world for 20 years now.
SC2 is still a lot of people in their 20s but I think there's some artificial pressure there because worst korea has mandatory military service and most of the pros delay it as long as possible and then retire from competition once they can't any more and have to take a couple years off

>I imagine RTS games could also have older top level competitors
the best aoe2 players are all in their 30s. there are so many facets to rts that you can actually do remarkably well with shit apm if your macro and strategy is solid. there is a player named red phosphoru who can manage to compete with top 50 pros based on off meta all in meme build orders with insane fast castle times despite he himself claiming that he is a much worse player. his eco is so shit that there is nothing for the opponent to raid and it tends to work as an all in strategy because he can put 99% of his attention to military micro with unique unit timing attacks that are just devastating to deal with

fighting games are similar in that there is so much more going on that just raw reaction speed. older pros coast a lot of intuition and fundamentals. ultimately correctly anticipating your opponent’s actions is more valuable than reaction speed in most cases

there are no video games that aren't random. In rts you have fog of war and likewise the most ubiquitous cheats for fps games remove the random element (knowing where your opponent is).
Anonymous No.718356090 [Report]
>>718354601
Yeah it's a balance, in FPS games knowledge gives you an advantage, but just way less of one. The ceiling of knowledge is far lower, and so it's much more reasonable for a 16 year old to know what they need to know and then the determining factor becomes mechanical execution and reflexes. In fighting games the ceiling of knowledge is effectively endless, and even if you know everything, being able to pull out and act on the right bit of knowledge at match speed is its own skill.
Having a ridiculous twitch reflex and enough knowledge does open up avenues that older/slower players don't really have though, like some players just can't react to drive impact, they have to predict. They don't have that option to just always know at any moment that if that fucker throws it out they'll win.
Then there's shit like Arcana Heart and Clarice's 1 frame low.

Because zoomers don't want to spend a million hours grinding in the lab for games with a prize pool less than League of Legends. It's by far the most new player unfriendly genre with the time spent vs reward ratio. In cases where a game is big enough that you see young blood join like SF6, Smash Ultimate, and Tekken 8, you do see zoomers getting better results than most players over 30.

there is the odd breakout kid that shows up and does great, but they're rare
hell one of the best competitive starcraft players is a boomer with like 180apm with kids who just has really specific, well planned builds
it's sort of like chess in terms of build order and shit so that makes mechanical ability slightly less important, but ultimately, great mechanics will generally win out, but even qualifying for ASL/SSL or making it high in KSL, w/e is fucking insane and tons of 30+ers do it
i only realized they're all 30+ now because they were older than me when i was watching them in 2007-2010 and i'm 30 now lmao

The 3S lobby on ade is much bigger than the ST one, but skill level is lower wjtg the average ST player much better at his respective game than the average 3S FC scrub.
Alternately, if everyone who never won a tournament dropped [major competitive game], the pool would be much smaller but it would now be the most competitive game on the market. Obviously size correlates to level of competition, but it's stupid to equate the two, plus competitiveness is one thing but depth is another; if a clicking contest had a billion dollar payout then it would probably wind up being the most competitive event ever but it would still be a clicking contest.

mostly unrelated but i was glitch hunting games and routing speedruns from like 20 years ago up until like 10 years ago when it became all selloutcore and infested with trannies, but i always thought it was the most cringe shit when people would put one player on a pedestal, call them a god, or even worse they'd get an ego and brag about their """world record""" when, generally, they're better than 1 or 0 people, because nobody else is trying
now you might say "uhh bro there's like 200000 people on the sm64 leaderboard!!" nah even sm64 back in the day was just siglemic and nobody was close, not even hyassin like it was so pathetic when people would act like anyone was a legend for being #1 in a "competition" of 1 people

Also, zoomers HATE the concept of 'labbing'. Putting in the work to git gud gives them the ick.

competitive is a 1v1, much easier to support a single player than it is to support a team for a long period of time
the starcraft scene is similar here
what I find interesting is noticing that the older players are always slower than the newer players but the newer players are always paying for their lack of experience somehow

Statistically speaking not everyone kicking your ass is Justin Wong, much less a pro.
It's just someone who has like 10 more hours than you, doesn't have a learning disability, or just has more motivation to learn than you.
Remember, only like 2% of fighting game players are pros.
