RDR2 is better in every possible way. RDR2 hate and the sudden β€œRDR1 is better” contrarianism is the most shallow, lame internet bandwagon I’ve ever seen. RDR1 is good, but 2 is a damn masterpiece.

rdr1 is a solid 8.5/10 for the whole game.

1 barely even has a story
the villains have like 10 minutes on screen time total and 90% of the game is the typical rockstar "do random favors for people who may or may not help you at all" shit
there's a lot of padding in 2 as well but story wise it's way better

RDR2 generally has a greater and more consistent story, it's much more personal and grounded compared to RDR1. RDR1 I feel like was a game that was a decent/okayish story that was elevated to greatness by an exceptional ending which prbly even better than RDR2's one. I feel like RDR2 is objectively has a better story but I just personally prefer RDR1, it lingered with me longer.

RDR2 is a 10/10 until you get to the epilogue, which really ends the game on a low note just to set up RDR1. The worst part of the main game is the very beginning, but it just gets better and better, until the epilogue of course.

Red Dead 1 is much more cynical and lonelier compared to Red Dead 2. The atmosphere and tone are very different between these two games, they really cannot be compared. If you are playing RDR2 after RDR1 then do not expect some kind of RDR2 part 2 like I did.

I vaguely remember the story from rdr1 and a lot of the characters and I haven't played it since the 7th gen. I can't even recall the members of the gang aside from like 2 that aren't from the previous game. I do recall the story though because its literally just "lets do a robbery to escape, oh shit thats not enough money" repeated a dozen times and tuberculosis.
A shit ton of rockstar games are about getting sidetracked over and over again while chasing a goal but rdr2 was pretty lazy about it.

I enjoyed RDR1's story because it was a man trying to get away from his misdeeds of his past but ended up needing to be a violent man again rather than a rancher to get his wife and kid back. He just wanted to get it over with but was pulled into so many others affairs that could only be solved with violence.

So it was a story that made sense for a video game in which you're often doing violent acts while still having a sympathetic main character for people that can get into a man wanting to walk away from his dirty past.

It really isn't, it's a half-assed story in a poorly made game. The characters are shallow, boring and unlikeable and the story is a plodding beast that takes hours to advance a micrometer, and it's not a fun journey either. Literally just GTA on horses: ride here, listen to this moron tell you what to do, ride to where he tells you to go, do the boring task he gave you and ride back, and you're forced to listen to the most awkwardly written, hamfisted dialogue in the industry the whole way there and back.
The game itself is also excruciating to play. Animation locking everything you do which causes a constant series of headaches, the menus are fucking terrible, the game constantly swaps your loadout to shit you don't want from one mission to the next. The open world is very nicely made but it loses its luster after riding around for a few hours and realizing there's fuckall to do except shoot shit or fish. And the fishing sucks.
The game is shit and if you like it you have shitty taste. I will not be entertaining further discussion from shit eaters.

Why? Shit on IV all you want but how was GTA V that much better?
>cars drive like toys now
>story is really bad
>side activities are even worse, especially if you count TLaD and TBoGT as a part of GTA IV
>in V campaign missions are more varied and have more bangers on one hand, but the game also has more pure dogshit missions like yoga or the docks wagie simulator

RDR2 is saddled down with too many extra characters that only exist to eat time away from the gang members I actually wanted to get to know.
>don't get to know Bill
>don't get to know Javier
>don't get to know the Reverend
>instead Sadie, Micah, the native/black guy I actually like but forget the name of, and some other camp randos with no real providence suck up all the air and add pretty much nothing
RDR2 has a stupendously strong start but it starts falling apart in chapter 3 and faceplants hard in the final acts. Micah being the rat should have been a damn red herring and Sadie just shouldn't have existed. And I say this as someone who LOVES raspy-voiced gingers. God, she sucks.

A more mild criticism: the writers have no idea how to actually write religious characters and it shows. The nun woman talks like a Unitarian and her and the Reverend's monolog to Arthur suck (and it not being the Rev in the 'good' ending for Arthur is bad too). I was also disappointed every time Rev wanted to talk only for Arthur to get sidetracked two sentences into the conversation with some other bullshit busywork job.

Pretty fuarking game though. Can't fault Rockstar there.

The story was also more cohesive and normal. The implication was that you were part of a group of four bad asses who roamed around the West and you were one of them.

RDR2 made Marston into a complete irrelevant bitch boy as well as making the gang some kind of Contemporary Modern Society (TM)-loving collective whose worst crimes were being loansharking while everything else was The Morally Correct Thing To Do (TM).
I know why faggots like RDR2 and it's mainly because of its modern politics.

2's kind of starts falling apart in chapter 5. Remove Guarma from the story and nothing changes.
also it doesn't help there's a walking talking contradiction of the game's themes in Sadie.
revenge is a fool's game. outlaws' time is over? hell no, girls can get their rightful revenge then ride off into the sunset to live a life of adventure as a cool outlaw.

>How is THAT a good ending
I meant that John personally had a good ending to his story, just in my opinion. Not good for his future or ability to live...but it was interesting and tragic. He risked his life to make amends for his misdeeds for his jailors, and when they wronged him, at least he had a chance to turn the gun on them and he died standing and fighting like he's been doing the entire game. Depending on what you believe, one could say that he deserved equal or greater treatment for all the needless and selfish death he caused and that sending bloodthirsty cops after him was justice. Another might say that he did his time by risking his life and sacrificing his dignity by betraying his old gang. I believe both honestly and these aren't just arguments coming out of my ass.

>he gets executed with his wife
He didn't get shot with his wife. I'm not sure how she died actually, I must have missed if there was anything implied. Did she get hung by the feds? I thought her and Jack ran off on a horse afterward. But if they stuck around then that's a possibility. I thought she died of a "broken heart" or something like that a few years later.

>and his kid becomes a pathetic criminal just like him.
As for Jack, I guess it's really up to your interpretation. I don't know if we can say that Jack is a criminal canonically just because the game lets you play as him and shoot people as him just so that you can continue to play the game after the story. All we know is he follows the old way of the blood feud and kills the man that kills his father. This just came off as some kind of fan service and a "good" ending to my dumb ass mind at the time so I didn't like it. Maybe that was a part of it. It's entertainment after all. Giving into righteous anger can be cathartic.

No that’s likely just an Easter egg. The canon explanation is that his fate is unknown. I always hated the theory that John became lived a long life and became a writer. It really takes away from the tragedy of RDR’s ending and it’s just not aligned with a game centered around how your past actions have consequences and will catch up to you. I think the most logical theory is that he ran from the law or was eventually caught and punished.

Yep. They made the story to fit the game instead of the other way around. It worked well with the morality system as well, you are consciously deciding whether you want John to redeem himself (plz do not) or to continue to be an outlaw and nothing in the story contradicts that because your goal is the same regardless, saving your family.

It also doesn't take itself too seriously apart from a few key emotional moments, the exact opposite of RDR2 where one of the first missions is a fucking social justice fantasy about being le hecking tolerant outlaw in the 19th century.

RDR1 tops. It's a spaghetti western game with great, pulpy writing that comes off as less indulgent than RDR2, that has superior gameplay and graphics but starts to lag the further you go into the story.

John's journey was more compelling and filled with less distracting bullshit or side characters that served no purpose, and his arc as a result is cohesive and well executed. Arthur, meanwhile, spends too much time jerking off about how much of a big retarded killer he is, refuses to turn on his brain even when it hurts the story, and is forced to interact with characters that are massive downgrades of their RDR1 counterparts. The camp feels like a fucking Robin Hood hideout and not a collection of thieves and murderers led by a man filled with delusions. Dutch is easily the best character and has a good descent to madness, and Micah might be the most pointless would-be red herring villain ever. I won't even talk about Sadie, she stomps all over the themes the game tries to tell.
They fucked up with RDR2's narrative because they weren't as laser focused as in the first game. John's story is less about redemption and more about making amends while he can. Arthur could fill the redemption niche had the gang actually been brutal.

I was thinking Dimitri, who basically disappears from the game from the moment he betrays Niko until his death in the final (or penultimate) mission

He still gets ocassional mentions and phone calls but it's not enough presence for a primary antagonist

The exact same thing happens with Bully, where Gary also disappears from the game from his betrayal until the final mission

RDR 2 annoyed the fuck out of me in terms of the immersion being dogshit. You put in hundreds of dollars investing in the camp while everyone is barely putting in a couple bucks then if you go do some shit for a few days and come back everyone and I mean everyone is like "ARTHUR WHY AIN'T YOU PULLING YOUR WEIGHT?!? WHY AIN'T YOU PUTTING IN MONEY ARTHUR???" It was completely baffling to me I think it happened in chapter 2 and it just made me feel a complete disconnect. Then the Strawberry thing happens where you murder basically an entire town and it barely gets brought up? Wouldn't it be massive news if 40ish people in one town got shot and killed? RDR 1 at least made sense in terms of your actions having realistic consequences. RDR 2 lost me. I don't even know how people defend it

Wrong.
RDR2 has better graphics, map, and NPC behavior. But RDR has better story, gameplay (not a slog), music, and multiplayer (not a grindfest). Both games have their merits but RDR2 isn't "better in every possible way." I just hope R* remembers to make GTA 6 fun and not just cinematic.

I found RDR2 too soft for the crime genre. It was especially funny when Arthur started acting like a girl when Dutch killed the old woman on Guarma. I would like the game to keep the tone of the first part, and I would like Arthur not to be a pretty boy.

Sorry, I was too busy playing the game.

Like, I really appreciate details like the ambient camp dialogue, I wouldn't fault Rockstar for it, but you go on ONE job with Javier (which is mostly just him getting called the lowest power slurs I've heard in my life) and ONE fishing trip. He gets less real screentime than Lenny, who only exists to die in Saint Denis.

Even without hanging around in camp the campaign in tens of hours long. I shouldn't have to scrounge through ambient dialogue to get some characterization for returning characters. There's plenty of goddamn room in the normal story already, it's just wasted on too many random fucks.

Have to agree with this. People complain about filler in 1 but the thing is you, as a player, have the proper motivation to be involved with all the storyline weirdos because they can help you find leads to track down your associates and get 1 step closer to freeing your family. However, there is no such proper motivation for the player in 2. We go on all these retarded endeavors because of 'loyalty to dutch' or something and yet half the fucking gang, including arthur, knows dutch is a fuck up and an idiot and that his plans are shit and spend their free time complaining about him. So why am I still with this group of retards? This feeling is further exacerbated by the fact that the entire plot is a quest for cash so that you can run away for good, apparently, yet meanwhile I'm walking around with like 25k in pocket while finding gold all over the map. Money isn't an issue in 1, it's not part of the story so there is no dissonance and again, why am I, as the player, messing around with these incompetent retards when I could have just taken my own earnings and left for south america by myself midway through the game? It's not motivating, it's frustrating and because of this the filler in 2 is a fucking painful slog to sift through which always makes me wanna quit and just fuck around in the open world looking sidequests or fishing and whatnot. tldr: dutch is an annoying cocksucker and I'd rather be in Colm's group doing real gang shit instead of being part of the hippie brigade that can't shoot straight.

Gaurma had great potential to be the bridge between Chapter 6 and the previous chapters. It could have been an Apocalypse now/heart of darkness descent into madness, where the gang members become increasingly brutal and desperate, with Dutch increasingly showing his true self even more than before. But in the final game Guarma is super rushed, and the gang members like Javier turning evil in Chapter 6 feels it kind of came out of nowhere.
