For me, I grew up with both the OG Pokemon and Digimon shows, but I don't know, I ended up going with Pokemon more because I guess I got annoyed by how unpredictable the digivolving was and how repetitive the animation was when it happened.
I dropped out of the show after the first series ended and stuck with Pokemon, but over the years I kept coming back to try Digimon out again only to THEN get annoyed by some of the anime trope shit like villains digivolving at the last second because ??? shonen anime trope???
I think the unpredictable digivolution thing bothered normalfags too, people getting weirded out by how a little cat thing can become a straight-up biblical angel with big boobs, or a cute flower thing turning into a cartoon cactus turning into a fairy, that kind of stuff.
Like, seriously, you have to picture the idea of someone going "oh, cute bunny" and then a couple digivolutions later, it's not a bunny at all and now it's a salaryman with a chainsaw and a robotic eye because ??? and then he digivolves again and now it's a busty dominatrix with chainsaws for arms.
With Pokemon, 99% of the time you can kinda see how [x] becomes [y] and then [z], and I think that makes them more appealing to a lot of people, it feels like they're "growing up".

Nah, surprisingly Digimon wasn't really viewed as a "knockoff" by too many people back then, and it felt "apples & oranges" to me. You either liked the more "anime" vibes of Digimon, or you liked the "cartoon" vibes of Pokemon. Digimon not having a solid game to compete against Pokemon's RBY was the nail in the coffin, TBQH.
Can't speak for the N64-PS1 war since our family kinda did both and most of the arguments back then were about exclusives, not some corporate labeling shenanigans.
The Apple vs everyone else thing was because they had excellent marketing and because they were the first to come up with a solid smartphone design so they got a huge head start despite being a shit company.
