If 5 cats can catch 5 mice in 5 minutes then we can deduce that 1 cat could catch 1 mouse in minute. Therefore if that one cat proceeded to catch 1 mouse every minute for 100 minutes then he would catch 100 mice.

That is, unless the cats are performing some advanced team-based mice-herding technique which necessitate 5 cats and would fail with a lesser number of cats. This is a bit of a stretch though. And by the same logic you could argue that 100 mice are capable of advanced team-based cat-avoidance techniques. In any case, basic real-world human reasoning should tell us that a cat can catch a mouse in a minute.

>If 5 cats can catch 5 mice in 5 minutes then we can deduce that 1 cat could catch 1 mouse in minute.
No because if you assume that 1 cat catches 1 mouse in 1 minute you're saying that for the 5 cats 5 mice 5 minutes (which the problem treats as a fact) that the cats take turns and after they get 1 mouse they stop catching to let the others which is wildly unrealistic.
The only thing you can deduce from that is that 5 cats can catch mouses at a rate of 1 mouse/minute. I won't believe any answer that isn't 5 cats.

There's literally no way that this isn't five cats.
Think about it: if five cats can catch five mice in 5 minutes, then it naturally follows that if they did that twice (i.e. 10 minutes), they would catch twice the amount of mice (i.e. 10 mice). Letting the 5 cats engage in 20 rounds of 5 minutes (20 x 5 = 100 min.), they would surely catch 20 sets of 5 mice (20 x 5 = 100 mice) and thus the answer is 5.
1 doesn't make any sense; if the cats were all capable of catching 1 mouse a minute, 5 cats would capture 25 mice in 5 minutes.

and you might just be stupid. It's a related rates problem.

5 cats in 5 minutes catch 5 mice.
Divide the mice by the cats.
That means 1 cat in 5 minutes catches 1 mouse.
Divide the mice by the minutes.
That means that 1 cat in 1 minute is a fifth of the way to catching a single mouse.
Multiply the mice by the final time.
That means that 1 cat in 100 minutes catches 20 mice.
Find the number of cats to make 20 mice into 100 mice.
That means you need 5 cats over the 100 minutes to catch 100 mice.
