He's great, his death is also pretty sad from his perspective.
He had to have known Rex wouldn't have fled like he asked, especially as green as he still was at that point, and there was no way he could have predicted Mythra appearing to fend Malos off.
As far as Vandham was aware, the whole party likely died then and there and he could do nothing to protect them. All he could say is he went out swinging.

dont play a lot of these but I do play a lot of WRPG's. one of the deaths I always found the most bullshit is how in Ass-Effect all your team of cool bros will die if you havent maxed their relationship and completed their side missions. I learned that the heard way no-spoilers.

I hate parts in party-based games where its "if you have this character in your party during THIS cutscene then they will leave your party and will either die or simply be unusable until several hours later".

The way to complete Solaire's quest is bullshit and unintuitive but the end just leaves him sad, not dead. Siegmeyer's death, by contrast, is much less bullshit. The game makes clear that losing your will to go on is what causes an undead to succumb to hollowing, and over the course of the quest you repeatedly undermine not only his perception of himself as a hero, but the very methods by which he has lived his entire life until he met you.

Siegmeyer IS a hero. He's always just in a pickle and needs some help in the manner. In Izalith, he helps repay that in kind. You just go hollow regardless despite your best intentions to keep going and according Siegmeyer's daughter he's been doing this kind of thing Undead or otherwise, throwing himself into adventures. Going hollow is purely random but it gets precipitated faster by losing the will to keep living as an Undead (as they are immortal). Siegmeyer did not lose the will to live, he sort of just faded away doing the thing he loved most which ended up having to be put down by his daughter in a secret area.

Valkyrie Profile is a whole game based on this concept. Each chapter of the game you will meet warriors that just died, and you recruit them to train and explore dungeons, and at end of the chapter you send them to Valhala and they leave the party permanently, though you can recruit them back again at final battle.

I do think that the presiding notion that Siegmeyer just gets depressed after you save him repeatedly comes at it as sort of a insecurity angle which I find uncharacteristic for Siegmeyer. Solaire expresses more depression and listlessness when you complete his quest and he never goes hollow. It's also fitting that his final resting place is in the Ash Lake. The most obscure area to find in Dark Souls. Siegmeyer had no intent of fulfilling the Undead prophesy of linking the flame, he just wanted to go on dangerous adventures and finding hard to reach areas until he just eventually goes Hollow.

Elves are naturally arrogant and aloof but the real reason why they're so back and forth is because they know that kind of sadness and pain can actually just fucking kill them. Elves are immortal for as long as they find reason to live and waste away once they're too far detached.

Exactly, and that’s what makes Siegmeyer’s arc so tragic in that distinctly Soulsborne way. He isn’t chasing glory or prophecy, he’s just adventuring for its own sake-like a child play-acting heroism. But the world doesn’t let you stay innocent. Every time you help him, you chip away at his agency, and he starts to question if he’s even capable of being that hero anymore. In the end, it’s not depression in the human sense-it’s hollowness caused by losing his purpose. Ash Lake being his endpoint feels like poetic justice. A forgotten warrior in a forgotten place, still clinging to a beautiful delusion.
