Google adpocalypse made running webcomic sites less lucrative, patreon and similar platforms made it far more lucrative to just draw random fucking porn and rake in 100x the money for less effort.

He got divorced, ended up in a comically bad financial situation. The comic itself wasn't paying the bills, and he wasn't finding other work.
So, after a failed suicide attempt, he decides the best way back is to sacrifice his integrity and exploit the popularity his brand has with furries and rake in some cash by drawing official VGCats porn.

At first, he tries to keep it to non-canon and side characters to preserve the dignity of the main comic somewhat. But that doesn't get people interested. But that paled in comparison to the genuinely atrocious art he was putting out. Saggy tits, weird proportions and a general misunderstanding of what was actually wanted.

So he moves on to drawing Aeris and Leo. But still didn't have a clue how to draw decent porn. He had absolutely no passion and no desire to be doing it except for the money. It was miserably shameful and tragic.

If he were smart, he could have just brought on Joe Lasko and VGButts, maybe even a rotating stable of other fan artists, to draw the characters he was comfortable with degrading and split the Patreon revenue with them in an official capacity. That way his hands would stay clean and everyone would get what they want.

The way it worked out was just comically sad.

I've seen this happen quite a bit. As the artists progress, they try to make their characters a little bit more designed, but it's offputting to the people who already liked how they look. I don't know if tails gets trolled it a good example, but people liked how stupid it looked, then the guy decided to stop continuing the story and instead start redrawing it from the start with a lot more detail and shading. It looks stupid. I understand wanting to grow as an artist, but it shouldn't come at the expense of what people already like. Modern simpsons also looks like shit in the same way. The gritty 90s stuff looks so much better.

More and more, it's become a blessing for a series/story to have a conclusion that isn't blatantly rushed/phoned-in. Not just webcomics, but in general. This is especially something that resonates with me as a Venture Bros fan. Here's the fun thing about moon over june. Stay with me here. Moon over june was absolutely abhorrent at anatomy, but they weren't exactly bad at coloring and shading. The reason why moon over june got so much traffic back in the day was because everyone who saw it thought it was going to be a wholesome lesbian sex comic, and they wanted to jack off.

Now I doubt this was intentional, but that hook would bring viewers in, disgust them, and then keep them coming back out of morbid curiosity. Whether or not that was the intention, that seems to be what happened.

Artist decided they didn't want to draw from the webcomic anymore(Steam Dragon Express) and I sort of lost interest in them for the most part as a result. I still check Flipside, and Gunnerkrigg Court, usually once an arc ends so I can read it all at once because of sunk cost fallacy. Started reading them when they first started and now by this point I feel compelled to keep reading them until they end.
