The discourse around the Sekiro anime sure got retarded really quickly. Yes, the studio has plans to use generative AI for an upcoming project, but it's not being used on Sekiro. Sekiro's been in production for a while before the studio embarked on this generative AI effort.

The anime looks "unconventional" because that's the stylistic inclination of the key anime staff. The director, character designer and action animation director have done animation in styles that allow for looser drawings and rough lineart. The director himself was part of the "web-generation" of animators in the 2000s which made flashy animation which tended to go off-model for the sake of expressiveness. He did quite a lot of work in the famous Naruto vs Pain episode by the way, and also some significant scenes in Tetsuwan Birdy Decode.

Animation quality has nothing to do with how good an individual frame is, like even 10 bad frames out of 10000 makes it bad, its what the thing looks like in motion, usually when there is a lot of movement or action you will get what is called "smears", and they look like shit, in motion however they are not noticeable and only serve to make an animation smoother where its like a transition frame, if you stopped on every frame you would notice that a lot of genuinely good animations have shit like incorrect proportions, wierd faces and limbs that dont make sense....because its made to be viewed in motion, not frame by frame.

Youre doing the equivelent of what people do in games where they go up to a wall and analyze how little detail there is and that it looks like shit, and then turn around and see that there is a whole city being rendered with people walking around and explosions, with lots of movement going on and its in 3rd person perspective.

Anime is still made by hand in very similar ways.
The only shift from CCS days to today, is the move from cel painting to digital compositing. Which really only addresses the last part of the anime production process where it is quicker to put a scene together because you don't have to photograph every frame independently.
But otherwise anime is still drawn by hand in a very similar way (many anime artists don't even use drawing tablets and instead work on paper that is then scanned).
There are not many technological advancements since the times of CCS that the average anime has access to that was substantially change the budget vs quality equation.

Frieren has better and more elaborate animation than CCS.
It was also a very expensive series.
That is correlated today as it was then.

Naruto had solid choreography, better than its peers at the time, One Piece and Bleach, for example.
It having poor writing had nothing to do with it also having good animation quality.
And sloppy in-between frames or ones that look contorted and strange are very normal for any action anime. A scene is going to have somewhere between 6 and 24 frames per second, and most of those are going to be transitional between key frames. Where sloppy anatomy is worth the cost if it gets you a complete episode.

The first Naruto anime was very well done. In shit poo den, there were a lot of badly animated fights but peaks of Shippuden (like Kakashi vs Obito) are some of the peaks of the medium earning the animators fame and prestige they enjoy to this day. When you look at it objectively it's an alright Shounen series. It's not the best and it's certainly not the worst.

If you get the same quality out of an AI as you would from a team of animators, you'd be retarded as a studio not to replace that team with AI.
