Problem is that Nintendo EAD does not care about lore of a series. They create the gameplay first and then the story not the other way around. Until now most DK games were made by Western developers who cared about keeping a consistent lore which is why the Kremlings weren't in the Retro Studio games. This is the first time Nintendo EAD took creations made by Western developers and made it their own which is why it's breaking with previous lore. As far as Mario is concerned, he is and always was "Donkey Kong."
