I'm honestly surprised/disheartened by the apparent overwhelming pro-Verso faggotry among players.
>yeah pVerso and IRLRenoir are super tragic and charismatic, let's just let them end a world of thinking, feeling beings, including the rest of your party members that you were probably rooting for 5 minutes ago.
Devs fucked up the presentation of Maelle's ending.

nah Aline was just having a woman moment and Renoir was slightly more right than Verso. Though maybe the top two tiers should just be a collage of both renoirs and verso.

No one's (or at least very few are) pretending that what Renoir (and Verso) do to the canvas isn't a great tragedy, most of the Verso support comes from understanding that a lot of people would do terrible things to protect their families. That we spent all of act 1 getting to know those people, all of act 2 continuing their struggle, and all of act 3 thinking we could still save them is what makes the ending so tragic and conflicting.

I finished the game with my mom yesterday and she said she "probably" prefers the Verso ending but she understands that both endings are "clair obscur". For some reason she cried more at the Maelle one, probably because she really liked Gustave and Sophie and enjoyed seeing them again. It's weird, I find the Verso ending generally to be a bigger tearjerker. From his conversation with Maelle after the duel, to saying goodbye to everyone, and the quiet resolution at the grave.
I also died to Renoir once because my mom wasn't the biggest fan of the combat so the only side stuff I did was story important stuff like the Reacher and the party members quests.

idk I've seen a lot of pro-Versofags saying that the canvas people aren't real and it's just Alicia essentially talking to ChatGPT (but Painted Verso isn't ChatGPT because a piece of Verso's soul is in the canvas even though the two are shown to be separate entities). Maybe they're just trolls though.

There's trolls and brainlets all over the place but I never got the impression that most verso pickers thought the lumierens weren't real, thinking intelligences. In threads like these, though, you get the people with dumb opinions repeating them often and loudly.

Every painted version of the family has their qualities a bit overtuned.

pRenoir does everything to keep his family intact
pVerso sacrifices everything to save his family (or rather his little sister, and maybe Aline went full cope and has him care more about her than Alicia in general)

The little we see/read of painted Clea who seems "normal". Probably why the real one hated it and trapped her inside her own body to make Nevrons then pretended to be her to her dead boyfriend.

Why'd Maelle even paint him old in the first place?
If she was being selfish and wanted to spend time with him, but not make him immortal like Aline did, why not just make him in this 30s like normal to have a few decades with him?
If she was being selfless, she could've painted him at his age before the fracture so he could live the life he wanted to live instead of a life forced onto him by his parents fighting.
This ending just seems like some weird middle ground between not wanting to let him go, but also not forcing him to live much longer.

If that were the case she wouldn't have seethed so hard about painted Clea and Simon. Clea acts like a huge cunt but I think like the rest of the family she's just dealing with the loss of Verso.

I've come to the conclusion that there's no subterfuge and the writing of the game is just that bad. The ending is sincere, the intended interpretation is that the lives in the canvas don't matter, the immaculate beginning of the game is a joke and Renoir is delusional for entertaining the autonomy of painted beings.

I picked the Verso ending thinking maybe they could restore the canvas somehow years later except leave the people who want to be dead, dead. Even if not Maelle clearly cared more about herself and her feelings than the existential dread and individuality of those around her. Long term that sounds like a living hell especially since it looks like she has no qualms about forcing Verso to exist.

Verso is still fucked up, since he is fine with destroying the whole world along with himself.

Shes a 16 year old girl, our logic is very flawed at that age. In her mind it was probably a type of middle ground to not see herself as a bad person by forcing her brother to stay alive.

Either:
a) painted people don't matter, in which case there is no flaw in Verso ending, or
b) the "flaw" of the Verso ending is so monumentally overwhelming that Maelle's ending is the only choice in which case the presentation is just plain wrong.

Lune was carrying the expedition from the start. Probably the most tragic character because her entire life is dedicated to the expeditions and it is literally her parents dying wish to take over.

Makes the Verso ending more tragic with that look of utter hatred she has that her life amounted to nothing.
