Yume Nikki was definitely an early iteration of an Earthbound-like. The developer took inspiration from Mother 3, and then the Fox took shit in that game for his own Earthbound-like.

Funniest joke ever is that absolutely NONE of those Mother inspired games play like earthbound (not a single one of them incorporates the ticking health system from EB, it's all static damage you can't halt or slow down), and if they are Mother 3 inspired, they DO NOT have a storyline that flows like M3's does, nevermind EB.

It feels like every single EB inspired game is just people making something inspired BY THE IDEA OF EARTHBOUND IS IN THEIR HEADS rather than what it actually is. Illustrated example: ALL the fucking creepypasta-esque school rumour shit spew about what Gygas is. Even Undertale is very fucking deviated from Earthbound and shares hardly anything with it and this game was made by someone who GOT Earthbound's ending.

At least Gaster (assuming he's mysteryman) is an actual character that Toby is building off and has a prominent role in Deltarune's story. It helps how he has canon dialogue and background info, two things Uboa, and pretty much every other character in Yume Nikk, lacks.

Because the truth is calling Undertale "Earthbound inspired" is as accurate as calling it "SMT inspired" or "OFF inspired".

Undertale and Deltarune got more DNA shared with shit ALL Mario RPG series (timing attacks, active RPG fights where you actively dodge shit, THE FUCKING SLAPSTICK HUMOR) than Earthbound and again, you have to consider that Toby "Eroge King" Fox made a fucking earthbound romhack that's pretty damn sizeable. If anything the fucking fact that the halloween fact is "earthbound but depression" truly fucking nails the fact that only Earthbound romhackers (of which there are a fucking few) are the only motherfuckers making Earthbound inspired shit about depression. And they do it by actually using Earthbound.

One last thing about the depression part. The fact that this is co-related to DRUT is some nonsense. I can count on one hand the depression-themed characters across both games and the only relevant character in that regard is fucking Alphys. Everyone else is just regular and simple "woe is me" slapstick like the Ghost you can't kill.

Just because a game reacts to your horrible actions like killing Papyrus which automatically makes Sans spit venom at you at every opportunity he gets during judgment time does not mean the game is about depression, the game is just reflecting back on your actions that killing has consequences if they are written to have them. Similar shit happens in Dark Souls anyways yet hardly anyone dares to say Dark Souls is a quirky earthbound inspired RPG about depression in spite of the fact it can fit those criterias if you stretch it as much as that meme is stretched

And it sucks because rogue-like and rogue-lite mechanics are a fun way to spice up gameplay, lord knows how many hours i've sunk to that Roguelike arsenal Doom mod (DoomRLA for short) because of how cool it is to get lucky with drops to make the chaingun become a fucking swiss cheese factory (while also having the sexiest minigun sound from Turok 2's minigun), but then seeing this shit get slapped in such a haphazardly designed way is depressive. It feels like people just wanna be Spelunky but can't understand what makes Spelunky fun.
