Let's talk about pre-2010s indie boom indies. Also known as freeware games.

I'll go first...

I like Knytt a lot.

Oh yea, I loved WADF. I used to have really shitty internet back then, so I'd just replay this every time our internet went out for a few hours.
Likely played through it 20+ times.

>>718730976
Underground was hard? I don't remember that being the case at all. I thought it was pretty easy, but large enough where I never really knew where to go, which isn't a bad thing.
But, the character designs and dialog really hurt the experience for me. Felt like Nifflas was trying to cater to mainstream audience rather than just doing the thing he's good at. Like, why the fuck were there side-quests in a Nifflas game? Baffling.

As a 100% OCD fag I just got stuck on a few of the sky puzzles and gave up. I probably would have liked it if I could just play the game normally, witch is not possible for me.
I played the original Knytt on DS (there's a homebrew) and liked how simple and comfy it was. I recall the art style being different as well.

I'm thinking about replaying Cave Story for the good ending after 20 years. Is the GOG version a good choice? I don't want any remaster shit, just the original game with maybe bug fixes and maybe some extra content.

The first few hours of this game were just mesmerizing. As I went deeper and deeper into the ruins, I would wonder how far I could go before I died to a trap, tough boss, or just tough enemies.
Shame the difficulty eventually goes away as you get damage reduction, the XP buff, and more health. That's one big thing the remake fixed.

There is probably one of those ''So you want to get into Cave Story?'' charts floating around, but I don't have it.
I think the Steam release is fine, as you can play with the original visuals and music, with largest support for generic gamepads.
Don't take my word for it though.

Hero Core was fucking sick.
I loved the combination of schmup and Metroid-like exploration and can't really think of a game that plays quite like it.
Think there are a few twin-stick shooters that are similar though, but I like that you can only shoot in two directions in Hero Core. Makes it feel like a classic schmup where you have to position yourself to get a good shot at the enemy.
Never beat the hard mode though, shit got a bit too bullet-hellish for me. But, I will always recommend this game to any shmup fan.

I remember playing it back in 2010-2011 and liking it quite a lot. But all I remember is that It had very neat somber atmosphere and basically nothing else. Couldn't even recall the name for the long time, until I randomly stumbled upon the game on steam.
I don't think the game was very well known back then, and it is definetely forgotten as it gets now.

Fuck, this looks like a good thread to ask. I've been trying to remember the name of this old short indie game platformer where you play as a cutesy mascot, and partway through the game the levels will randomly turn to 'shadow' segments with dark hands grasping at you. The ending has you finding a princess who ends up also being a monster, and the good ending has your character also be a monster with her??

I can't remember anything beyond that, and the game wasn't especially noteworthy otherwise.

Can relate. I guess it's just in a nature of those types of games. Devs expect that you will come up with inventive, funny or intentionally complex things to solve the puzzle, but your brain just defaults to the least creative, "logical" solution, because you are wired like a robot. So you actually have to fight with your own self to extract fun from the game, but in the end you just end up tiring youlself most of the time, and making you lose interest.

Here's another game I have played a bunch in 2009-2010: Hammerfight (it was also known as Hammerfell at some point, but it got changed for obvious reason). It's a physics based 2D arena fighter where you fly some kind of fantasy medieval contraption and try to smack enemies with oversized swords, axes and hammers obviously until they die. Super fun, but gets too hard at some point, never managed to finish it back in the day.
The game was actually developed by the guy who later made Highfleet, as I discovered quite recently.

I think that was by Niflas as well?
I did play it 10 years ago and I remember how much I liked the space travel having you just chill to radio for a few minutes.
Platforming was fun and unlocked new parts of old planets over time by learning new skills.

I felt the same when I first tried itβ€”I ended up dropping it after a couple of hours. Then a couple of years afterwards I tried playing it again, and it's now probably my favourite game ever. I really think Underground's style grows on you, if you give it a chance to.

You could feel that he announced it, had a ready-to-go vision of it (basically a more beautiful, HD version of the original game), then went "ah fuck it" for no reason and went balls-on-the-wall meta with it. It feels more like World of Goo 1.5 than anything and the best thing about it was the extra hard levels that actually challenged you a little. There's a ton of "yeah remember this one?" levels even as chapter endings. The ending is also complete shit and makes the whole thing feel like a waste of time.
The penultimate chapter basically has the whole gimmick of how World of Goo sequels would look like 400,000 years into the future where one is a golf game, the other is a point-and-click adventure and the third is a gravity manipulator. All three are executed like shit. The ending is a lone human adventurer landing on the planet of Goos, going "damn that's cool" and then going back to space, which is basically also a callback to 1 with how the world is yours when you have custom levels.

Also got reminded of Skelly, Zombie Slayer. Cool lil' thing as an arena 2D zombie killing game. Ton of SFX lifted from Doom but the feedback is pretty nice.

This game convinced me that indie games can be extremely good and are worth looking for more.
I liked the role reversal of the section where you have no water except some floating bubbles. Contrasts nice with the usual platformers where the water level is the awkward playing one. Incredible stunning OST too.

Yeah it's not hard to get used to it since most is platform exploring anyway.
And saying shit like "Felt like Nifflas was trying to cater to mainstream audience" makes one sound like a deranged /pol/schizo that can not comprehend that an artist is genuinely putting what he likes and cares about into a project he poured so much into.
And lines like that is why /v/ became so unusable to talk about indie games. Can't talk about any game without the garbage of the world coming in to yell shill or go through an artists twitter history for phrases that trigger him.

VVVVVV still holds up really well after 15 years. Game got the most love it ever got in the last couple years after the source code got made public as well as more language support and QoL features like being able to select the intermission levels. His other games still kick my ass but I was so dedicated enough to play VVVVVV that beat it without dying.
If you do end up playing it you'll want to lock the frame rate to 60 FPS otherwise it plays too smoothly which looks jarring and makes you mess up more precise parts.

If you want to play more games similar or inspired by it, I can recommend You Have To Win The Game and Cat Planet.

Speaking of the guys who made a thing, and then much more popular thing.
I was browsing through my old stuff, notes and bookmarks and whatnot, trying to find the game that got stuck in my mind, despite playing not that much of it. Finally found the name, Blood Zero. It was a top down action adventure with some RPG elements. And a some sort of party system with a bunch of companions with different combat abilities. As far as I remember you could have 3 or 4 characters in a party at the same time and you could switch which one you control directly. I thought it was pretty neat. The whole game had some sort of edgy punk rock vibe to it. Very edgy. But I was an edgelord back then, so I liked it.
So anyway, I looked up who made it, and turns out it was James Silva from Ska Studios, who made Salt And Sanctuary, of all things. And a bunch of other games for XBLA/XBLIG. And some more stuff even before that, as Totally Screwed Software, Blood Zero included. Apparentely he was making games since 2001.

I've been thinking about the 5 Days a Stranger series again. Personal views about Yahtzee aside, I think most of the horror elements hold up well enough. However, going back after years of reading different horror stories and playing other horror games, I can't stand the writing. I think it comes down to the character writing. Every single line of dialogue feels solely expository, as if everyone is standing around waiting to feed you more info instead of being memorable characters. I also feel a lot of the dialogue, mostly from Trilby, feels too quippy and pulls me out of the scene. I played through 5 Days again and felt no investment for what happens to anyone in the cast.

The whole Chzo series had some interesting elements to it, but yeah, it wasn't very well written. I wonder if he could make a good classic point and click adventure NOW. He did write a bunch of decently recieved books, and he has been his own writer for Zero Punctuation and his new Legally Distinct Definetely Not Zero Punctuation for almost 20 years now. So I bet you could do it this time. If he abandons his "I am good enough to do everything alone" attitude and cooperates with some artists and voice actors, that is.
How is his latest game, actually, writing-wise? It looked like ass and gameplay also looked uninspired, I have no intention to play it myself.

There would be validity if it were something actually old, like the flash game era. No, this is just when indies were "faux-nes/snes platformers but artificially difficult or atari visual walking simulators about gay depression" instead of "quake but gay and retarded or 3d walking simulator about depression and gender reassignment". And of course, any indie game that actually tried to be something worthwhile like Wrack just dies in the cradle because indieshits only ever want to play garbage.

Tor is one of my top final boss fights of all time, and the music is part of what makes it so good. It's just so aesthetic as a whole. You and the enemy general one on one on a rooftop, the sky lit up over the city with the sunrise, and hundreds of alien ships looming overhead ready to glass the planet if you lose. The music is the cherry on top.
