Horror has always chased trends and is the most creatively bankrupt genre in media. Universal monsters, slasher villains, shakey cams, creepy pastas and now childish mascots who are scary. It's the easiest shit to make bank off of and it doesn't have to be good to be successful.
Anonymous No.718769302

We weren't, or at least I wasn't scared. I thought this stuff was cool, horror was just another genre of action where the monsters and villains looked cooler and acted more evil than what I was used to at that point. I guess the closest analog is to Marvel comics like Venom or Ghostrider, they aren't horror but the implications can be scary because the characters are just much more intense.

There are some gems from the modern era really just the first 3 Fnaf games
I think the bigger problem with these games is that they want you to get invested in a potentially good game instead of just giving you a good game. How many of these are released in parts or alphas? They do that to maximize sales from one game and because it's easier to keep one hype train going than to start a new one with each new project. They can then say that the game is in early access, problems will be fixed with later builds and they'll listen to community feedback, but they never do, in fact the games just get worse because the devs have no incentive to improve now that they already have an audience.

This but not in the way anon probably thinks. Horror is at its core familiarity, for the "Modern" Audience the idea of Marketable Mascots is more "Close" then monsters based on Animals, weird tracks found in the woods, that weird smelly guy who lives at the edge of the village or the local Nobleman who is abusing his authority.

Let me put it this way. Who is "predating" on normal fags these days? Companies. What do Companies have? marketable Mascots, therefore the "Predator" for a Normalfag in the modern day is a Company (and the Mascot just serves as its "Monster"), and subconciously many of the normalfags are aware of this.

That is why so much mascot Horrors has "Snraglebugbum may be an abomination, but Snraglebugbum Incorporated is the TRUE Villain behind it all by being a greedy company!" plotlines.

Fnaf proved a decade ago that you can have recognizable killers and still be scary, or delve into different types of horror like body horror.
The problem isn't the mascots, it's cynicism on part of the people making these games. It's only about the money and appealing to as wide an audience as possible, so everything actually scary or interesting is left on the cutting room floor. It creates dull games that could have so much potential if they actually tried.

FN@F has done unrepairable damage to horror with popularizing mascot horror. I don't blame him for making the first game or even the second but all of his stuff just became the same lore youtube bait garbage. Because in order to be marketable or likable then a character must have some redeeming qualities. People don't buy merchandise of monsters that rape their prey or burn babies. It's why people do mental gymnastics for child murders actually be depressed and misunderstood because they want to justify to themselves morally why they like a character.
The formula thus goes like this
>Monster is a variant of an in universe mascot
>They are also an experiment or unwilling percipient in being a monster
>They are owned by the big mean man who does all the bad things
>Monster is only ever reactive with it's violence
This is what you need. It conflates the in universe mascot with the monster and infers personality without needing to give them personality. People will eat it up and you can start selling merch now.

It exists on the local level too. Plenty of cops, city councilmen, school workers, imams/priests/rabbis and relatives molesting kids too. And they all abuse their powers in other ways too. A power tripping cop can be a scary thing.

I actually saw a pretty well made analog horror series called Dog Nightmares which covers the subject in a particularly unsettling manner. Don't know of any games which do unfortunately.

>Being against one thing means you must be for this other thing
No, trannies are creepy as hell too. If they didn't have a vice grip over modern culture and the ability to unperson people they'd be prime horror material. Aside from the usual buffalo bill stuff, there's a lot of chances for body horror with the shit they do to their bodies for the sake of fulfilling gender identity. Its a shame no one can do it due to the gender mafia though.

I remember seeing this horror game about a fungus that basically turns people into trannies and uses them to seduce other men into coming into the fungus cave so the fungus can consume them. The dev had to come out and swear up and down that it wasn't an attack on transgenderism because a bunch of trannies got mad. Shame, because it was some pretty spooky stuff.

Seeing too much at one of those parties would also make for great horror. Maybe you play as an under cover journalist and you have to maintain your cover while witnessing all these horrible things. It couldn't be actual rape obviously, because of platform censorship rules and nobody wanting to look at rape, but it could be some obvious metaphor for it. Horror has always represented real issues. Alien invasion movies were the fear of communist infiltration, slasher movies were about serial killers which were big in the news at the time, a lot of modern horror plays on the power and actions of corporations, and even the horror of the people in power being psychopaths has been done before. What we're talking about right now is literally the plot to Eyes Wide Shut.

They have stakes just not sufficient stakes. All you ever get is something like death or implied death, which is weak. Super Mario has you die if a Goomba catches you, that doesn't make it scary. You have to hammer home to the player exactly what will happen if they fail. It doesn't have to be gore (though gore is a quick and effective way to do it), but it does need to be disturbing enough to scare them.

Not only that, but they're also adaptations of urban legends which predate the Internet and go all the way back to Victorian times with guys like Jack the Ripper or stories of cursed Mansions. In fact, some "creepy-pastas" are just barely rebranded or changed urban legends which you can found records on local newspapers. Ideally you want to keep deaths to a minimum, but have chance for them to happen always be close by. As an example, you don't die often in Resident Evil, but the opportunity for you to die is always present, and the consequences for it are grave (losing an hour or more of progress). So it puts the player on edge and makes him paranoid.

Resident Evil's philosophy seems to be to force the intended way to enjoy the game. There's not nearly as many choices or chances to be clever as before. I noticed this a lot with RE4.
>can no longer choose whether or not Ashley joins you for the Garrador fight and the room with knights
>when Ashley raises a bridge, an extra enemy will spawn in when you're almost there, even if you made sure to kill all enemies, because they *really* want to force that moment of the bridge falling while running away from the regenerator
>enemy AI just completely loses interest once you raise a turret to block their path (the Ada DLC fixes this at least)
>when you return to the farm, the unarmed berserker will inexplicably start walking towards your location if you stealth kill too many enemies. You're not allowed to stealth through the whole section.
>when you fight two Gigantes, you can't just open the trap under their feet. You *must* stun one by either shooting its weak spot or using a flash grenade first. Otherwise they'll just stumble off the spot.
