Once you understand it well enough, the combat isn't actually unfun. In fact it can be very fun breaking it over your knee with builds like the toreador gunslinger or indestructible tanktrue.

I did, about 2 months ago, so that I would have the proper frame of reference to shit on VtMB 2 when that comes out.
It was a great experience by itself though. It's really obvious where they started running out of time and budget, but even the endgame wasn't nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. Aside from Nosferatu sewers and Ming Xiao's temple, that shit was ass.

Even with unofficial patch the game is so jank. The atmosphere and writing are so good though it's still fun to play. Captures the 90's aesthetic perfectly, though it's a late 2000's game.
First playthrough I did vanilla brujah. Found out I was fucked because the later bosses are impossible to beat with melee weapons builds. Ended up just noclipping and godmoding after I got to the warrens.
This time I'm doing unofficial patch toreador with firearms and not cheating. Even on hardest difficulty the gameplay is super EZ and some of the cut content quests are glaringly undercooked. You can tell why they got cut. Source engine is pretty rough by todays standards but the shooting is what it does well so it's surprising how bad the shooting is. Having to wait for your reticle to shrink and the added recoil makes gunfights wacky. Enemy AI is so trash they just stand there and wait for you to headshot them.
Still a fun game, all someone would have to do to make a better sequel would be to take the exact same formula and make the gameplay good. Though I'm not excited at all for the current sequel in the making because they seem to be focusing on cinematics and graphical fidelity rather than gameplay systems. VTMB has great gameplay systems, it just doesn't have great core mechanics.
VTMB a perfect example of a diamond in the rough, I can't recommend it to most people because you really have to be a hardcore fan of video-games to suffer through it and see what it could have been rather than what it is, or maybe if you're a zoomer obsessed with that 90s grindset.

Isn't it pretty much norm to get axe from villa, then get glock in downtown LA, and stick to them until you have to go to Hollywood sewers? I remember mostly using axe all the way until Hollywood, then getting Colt Python and sledgehammer. Colt alone paired with something like katana or sledgehammer could carry you all the way to endgame.

It feels like it had a lot of great ideas that were underimplemented. The way the attributes and abilities combine into feats that can be used in gameplay is great, but they all end up just being skillchecks rather than effecting the handling of your character or changing the mechanical gameplay.
For example, I feel like at 10 firearms my character shouldn't have as much recoil or as much wait on the skrinking of the aiming reticle. At 10 sneak I should be able to go prone, sidle along edges or crawl along walls, instead I'm just functionally invisible when standing right infront of an NPC as long as my numbers are high enough. Lockpicking and Hacking are skill checks, can you open this computer or door or not, rather than effecting some kind of minigame.
All of the combat skills only effect damage numbers rather than give you different attack animations or speed with the weapons.
Social skills are simply dialogue box checks, the same way that fallout works. I don't really have an idea for that, other than maybe obscuring the numbers and having it affect a hidden rating if someone is attracted to you or intimidated by you, or having it so you can pass or fail the speech checks.

Disagree that the story is great. Christof is so corny with his faux elizabethan accent. But I do think the general narrative of a crusader across centuries is a lot of fun.

Also, just like Bloodlines, the writing and world building is weirdly cozy in places. A lot of the characters are very strong. I don't know what's with vampire games and getting this right. Like Ecaterina barely says anything but her very presence is interesting and tells a story.

In my personal headcanon I like to imagine the Lasombra are less "for the evuls lol" than they are depicted.

But that aside, personal take, I say Lasombra are basically Clan: the cycle of abuse. I think one of the major features of them is that they had a both an unusually highly active micromanaging antediluvian who was also extremely callous and terrifying. The clan has reflected this in a chain reaction ever since. You look at your average Lasombra and there might be a theme of "sure I'm an asshole, but you have any idea what I had to survive at home? Then you'd understand. I'm not even that bad compared to what came before me."

Lucita might be kind of edgy, but she's not her sire Moncada. But Moncada himself isn't as bad as some really old vampire elders that are in the Sabbat Black Hand or whatever. Like at least he's sincerely Christian and moral, in a way. So on. Until you get to big grandfather himself, terrorizing everyone to the point where even as a clan that lionizes sociopathy they rightfully plotted regicide to save themselves and the world from his existence.

Depends on what you mean by "hard". There's a lot of trap options in character building which leads to some people absolutely struggling with combat in the late-game. Since there are a lot of ways to avoid combat for most of the game and some bosses can be brute forced. In order to see all the speech checks and fight good, you're going to need to optimize a good bit.

But the actual gameplay isn't that unwieldy. Disciplines are straightforward, melee can be brute forced and shooting is simple.

If you really want to, you could enable invincibility or give yourself unlimited XP points through console fairly easily. I like playing VtMB but it's still worth it for the atmosphere, music, characters, etc.
