it's been great to see more people appreciate this game, there was a time I was the only one defending this game as everyone said it was shit compared to the soma games or OOE.

feels like the perfect mix of old and new vania, you have more classicvania level layouts and bats taking 1/4th your life on hard mode so you have to respect enemy attacks but there's still lots of hidden weird shit to find/grind to make things easier. the characters are two goofy anime dorks that do hulk hogan wrestling moves on death and have crazy tag team gameplay but this is also the igavania that makes the OG dracula novel canon to the timeline again and the premise is "so many people died in ww2 an IRL painter got really fucking mindbroken and summoned castlevania early"

>Rondo of Blood is a very fun game. It's the only Classicvania to have a save system. It's both the perfect entry to start with if you want to try older game and the one I'd reccomend to even people who aren't interested in the Classics.
>SotN is the first Metroidvania in the series, and to many, it was their best attempt. Direct sequel to Rondo, but everything you need to know about Rondo is explained in the first few minutes of the game. Almost laughably easy, but it makes up for it. Lots of secrets if you're into that.
>Castlevania 64 is skub. It's as cool as it is frustrating.
>Castlevania Legacy of Darkness is a same console remake of 64. It does some things better, some things worse. It has lots of quality of life improvements, though some of its levels are less interesting and one is just plain not fun. (Tower of Executions in base 64 ran at like 5 fps, but the one in LoD is just plain miserable.)

I like those games where you can customize loadouts for your teammates since they add a layer of strategy. I didn't care for Nocturne but I didn't see what exactly was so much worse about it than the previous seasons. None of it really leveraged what makes the games fun, and frankly the games do not have good stories and the more they focused on it the worse the stories became (with the sole exception being maybe the first Lords of Shadow which has nothing to do with the rest of the series). The only way to do a Castlevania adaptation was to dump money into it and make a fun action/horror show that let the style be the substance, but that's expensive and doesn't suit the subscription model.

I guess? It's hard to say. The series was only ever intended to be a few games, and that's what we got, however awful Lords of Shadow 2 turned out to be. It's possible that in another world where LoS2 had been a big hit and Konami didn't give up on video games for a decade that we'd maybe gotten one or two spinoffs in Lords of Shadow's continuity, but that's fruitless speculation. They were adamant about it being a trilogy and a trilogy is what we got.

We talked about it before and I mentioned that I would prefer to make Johnathan Harker a playable despite it not really making sense. Something of a mix of CV3 and CV2 and maybe PoR. Looking back at the good games based on CV2, I am thinking that CV2 was ahead of its time despite not being a particularly good game. Navigating the town would be less of a problem if the houses look less same-y. Harker could add an interesting twist to the game by making it start out more "survival horror-ist" then more action-y later.

It's hinted via Castlevania III that the church using actual spellcasters wasn't seen as a good thing and Sypha was essentially a test run, but they made her disguise herself as a man in order to blend in better and not use her witchcraft so blatantly in front of others. The situation had gotten desperate enough by that time that they resorted to it, but after Sypha was saved by Richter and the group killed Dracula the church was more open to 'properly trained' witches to the point by Charlotte's time they were openly letting church aligned witches do their thing. Yoko Belnades by Aria was an official church representative and still a witch so they integrated even more over the years.

When your enemy is using magic then you have to fight fire with fire. Even the Belmonts were eventually packing magical ability due to the Belmonts and Belnades mixing after Trevor and Sypha fucked.

That might actually be the best place to start for the Metroidvanias since it sticks pretty close to Symphony of the Night's foundation without adding new mechanics like the other games did. The others have more variety in gameplay so you'll have more to look forward to in those. Classicvania is more or less a different series, so if you're interested in those you should maybe start with IV (most player-friendly since they changed a lot of the trickier mechanics to give you more control) or the very first (which has aged far better than most long running series' first installments).

Yeah, that’s exactly how I felt too. Visually it’s got this awkward sheen to it, like it was made in some ultra-polished asset factory, but once you get your hands on it, it plays like it should. Controls are tight, enemy placement feels deliberate, and the item/power-up pacing has that same dopamine drip you get from peak Igavanias. The soul system is better realized in DoS by making the abilities power up with extra souls and using them to power weapons in Yoko's shop. The Julius mode is leagues better with the extra characters and leveling. No Claimh Solais to make the game easy mode either I also prefer the castle layout and areas in DoS but that's a matter of taste. I love both Soma games but prefer Dawn, my favorite Metroidvania overall.
