This looks exactly the same as the stores I went to in the 00s. The only thing missing is the 2x1 meter large crate of used games in the center, where you could buy 2 for like $10. I'm pretty sure I could find one in a mall somewhere today that looks like this.
Good riddance, I guess. Being able to buy games online is so superior to getting a disk.

Each year you would be getting in the range of 400+ new games over Sega Master System, Nes, Megadrive, Super Nintendo, then Playstation. Sega Dreamcast was 1999, PS2 was 2000 & Xbox 2001.
All technologies were rapidly achieving a transition from 2D to 3D story telling, worlds, graphics, features, game play. Your ability as a gamer rapidly expanded. This was also the glory years for PC as well.

Must have been nice, my parents hated video games. They bought a Nintendo & Genesis then stopped cause I wasn't playing outside enough. Years later I did summer work and bought a PlayStation which they were pissed about but it was my money so too bad. Didn't matter how good I did in school, getting an engineering degree, multiple promotions at work...they still considered them a bad influence.

none of these cases had games inside of them as anons imply, just a manual and box art.
the way it worked is that you picked up a case and they would either give you a fresh copy or disc of the game from inside the store.
they died out not because of white genocide, but because of digital downloads being more popular. steam, XBL, and playstation plus offered either offered free or extremely cheap sales of AAA quality games and these stores couldn't compete with them.
Tbh, physical stores like Gamestop deserved to die because they were scams. You only earned a $5 off coupon for a physical game if you traded in 10 games that cost more than it. They also offered shit overpriced merch too. The only thing worthwhile were gaming magazines like EGM, but their anti-woke Jewish CEO guy cut that off.

Wrong. They had the cart or disc in them.
No mudslimes in the EU back then, savvy?
You can go to Gamestop right now and experience this. Thanks to all the people that pushed up Gamestop stock, the brick and mortar retail stores are still going strong. Most of them would probably be closed by now if not for that.
They even have a used game section that you could find some hidden gems, but it's difficult nowadays because all the Ebay and Amazon resellers grabbing up almost everything that's some half decent deal.
Gamestop hasn't really gotten much worse from its peak of brick and mortar retail. The used games are less of a deal than they used to be but that's it.

In high school, I sold burnt PSX and Dreamcast games and Gamesharks to people. I'd go rent a game at Blockbuster rip it, then burn it to sell at school for $2.50 each. One for $3, or, 4 games for $10, or 2 for $5. I sold the Gamesharks along side them because to play the burnt PSX games you needed something like that, or some mod to the console. I probably did a lot of damage to the local Blockbuster and retail stores. I was making $500 a week sometimes as a 14 year old. No one was even aware that I was breaking the law and was doing it out in the open.

Being from that era myself: some times they did, some times they didn't. It depended on the actual store or chain.
The stores that removed the cart or disc and sleeved it behind the counter instead were usually the bigger chains influenced by US business models and also tended to have really, REALLY shitty staff that didn't care one iota for the material they were handling.
I knew a guy who used to work in one of those stores who was so disgusted with the flagrant malpractice of his colleagues that he up and left.
I'm talking levels of shit like opening collectors' editions boxes to harvest pre-order bonuses from them, copying authentication keys for PC games (which at the time were still written in the clear on the back of many manuals) leaving a future purchaser in the lurches, and even a few assholes playing frisbee with Playstation and PC games and having a good ol' laugh over intentionally scratching them.
Personally, I had made it a policy to accept only clean factory-sealed copies with the manufacturer-specific rip-cord intact and present - or I'd simply walk. I've had my fair share of people in line sighing and complaining about things taking too long, until I actually explained this shit to them - at which point most of them would look at the boxes they were holding somewhat quizzically; clearly wondering what they were in for, and more often than not they would actually follow up for asking for a factory-sealed copy as well.

I started subcontracting residential paint work soon after a couple of years before the real estate collapse. I would pay people I knew to come paint for me. And by then as well not as many people were buying burnt DVDs as they used to. But the real estate bubble blew up in 2007 or something and all the work dried up so I went to college, and out of college I got a job where I didn't really need to do all that hustle anymore.

Another difference is you have likely heard and know a reasonable amount about most of the games you are looking at today where as back in the 90s/early 2000s you didnβt know much about most of the games you were staring at. You would look at the cover of the game and if it looked cool you would just hope it was good. I donβt think this old system is necessarily better but it certainly created some good memories. I explicitly remember my grandma taking me to EB games (Canadian game stop) for my birthday and I got to pick one PlayStation 1 game for my new system and I picked harvest moon back to nature because it looked neat. Fell in love with that game and it still holds a special place in my heart.

Canada had the games in them until about the mid 2000s then they were removed them. Eventually they removed the manuals and free 48 hour Xbox live cards because brown kids would steal them. Early 2000s is when a lot of Punjabi started to move to Vancouver fyi

Why do people pretend the 90s were 100 years ago and no one actually remembers how they were? There's really a coordinated effort to gaslight people who lived through the 90s in order to convince them it wasn't as great as they remember.

Naw bra, it was worse. Back then they would always try to upsell you on the fucking prima game guides. They kept them on a shelf behind the cash register counter. Nowadays I don't have to go into the store and face the harsh judgement of the bullies who camped outside it in the mall to pick on nerds. I can just buy shit digitally. Video games used to be something for big fuckin nerds, It wasn't "normal". It was seen as weird. You were weird if you played video games and it was okay to push people who played video games around. On a day one release of a game you had to dress up like inspector gadget to sneak into the video game store if you wanted to maintain your reputation. Also back then, you had nothing to go on but the picture on the box and the description on the back, which always fuckin lied to sell copies.

Gamestop was the last store type in my area with that kind of display.
Remember, its subtle. OPs image has 7 shelve width of games. In one direction.
Larger supermarkets with a electronic sections used to have 3-4 shelf aisles for the same.
Now we are down to one aisles sharing Switch2/PS5, with a few mandated boxes alongside that.

Go to any big box store.
>Aisles are essentially one set of shelves for one brand's games and system + demo then maybe another set of shelves for the accessories for the brand.
>Target keeps Amiibos and gift cards in the same end display with the systems.
>Target's clearance section is now one single shelf that also has full price games in it so you don't even know if it's clearanced or not.
>Walmart just puts all the games and systems in half of an aisle with no real demarcation between the three, they basically all just blend into each other.
>The clearance aisle is as big as the entire three system section now in the two or three I've been to since Covid ended.
>Best Buy got rid of clearance aisles in the ones I go to and are so heavily cut down that the Switch "aisle" is half of a stocking shelf with no discounted games at all.
>Gamestop has basically every game locked in paper sleeves behind the counter.
>Gamestop's shelves are full up with boxes but in exchange it's filled with Funko Pop sections, entire spinning racks for clothing or more FPs, random Premium Bandai and Figuarts stuff in a corner that no one buys even though it's like $100 cheaper than ordering it directly from P-Bandai or Japanese shops, standing racks of random discounted knickknacks they couldn't sell, and blind bag toys near the checkout.
Even before Covid every single store had aisles twice as big as they do now and even they weren't as big as a basic ass K-Mart electronics section from yesteryear.

Same story basically. One time I let go of the cart we were shopping with to go into the aisle with her, not realizing the floor was slightly sloped, and so the cart rolled all the way down the main aisle and into some stand in the middle that was holding a bunch of knick-knacks that probably got damaged when the cart slammed into it. I just remember being confused and apologetic, and nothing came of it.
Then one time, we were in the same store and I was acting up, and I heard my name over the intercom, and she was like "See? They know you're acting up again" or something to that effect. Scared the shit out of me.

You're retarded
>nooo its just a display of goods how you arrange your store and the lighting and decoration don't matter
You are like people with no inner monologue, except for atmosphere. You just can't recognise it, it doesn't exist to you. Some stores sucked ass, and some were beyond godly, entirely because of the atmosphere they achieved from these things. It's the same reason people are nostalgic for video rental stores, or for arcades in the 80s, because they were not just ordinary places they were a deviation from everything normal. It's why the retard cracker barrel interior redesign, or any mcdonalds interior design comparisons between the 90s and todays stores annoy people, because one achieved a specific atmosphere and the other is stale, generic, normal building like every other normal building
The atmosphere is what makes going to a place either routine, or an actual experience. Very few things remain in society today that are experiences

Yes, that's a real thing, but I think it's also the fact that the world is some demonstrably different now in so many ways, that the 90s and early 2000s seem alien even to those of us who lived through it. The more knowledgeable among us could've seen this awful hellscape coming that is 2025, but we all thought things would just keep getting better. This whole, "things were always bad" mentality that I used to believe back when times were good has completely been stripped from my personality in the past 10+ years just because of how awful everything has gotten. I now realize how wrong and ignorant I was. It was so much better because 2025 is so much worse.

Today, I have access to 1000 times more games. Digital games have been a revolution for those who are more focused on actually playing them (regardless of whether it's legal or not).
The fact that I can easily and freely download most of the games I used to look at on store shelves back then is insane.
People today take this for granted and don't understand how modern PCs and digital games have made life easier for players.

I didn't notice the Internet truly feeling different until 2013, when minimalist design, mobile-first UX, and social media was in full bloom. Even now, I can still understand someone being nostalgiac for 2013-2019 just because of how awful 2020-Present has been. People who could actually, cognitively remember a large majority of the 90s would've been, at the youngest, 10 in 1995.
Someone who was 10 then is 40 now.
People who actually got to live through the 90s would be people who were 13-14 (typical age you could get a job) in 1990. Those people are bordering on 50 now.

This whole shit about how
>Ohhh, things are getting WORSE and DEGRADING
Is so laughable.
You know, people who were actual adults in the 2000s fucking hated it right? Because of the recession and housing market crash?
Go back to the 90s, a lot of boomers hated it because kids were now constantly on the 'tube and they had to propagandize in films to get them to go outside to dying arcades and "pop shops". Gen X'ers especially hated it because the 90s was right after the end of any true peace loving movements and the hard realization that life is eternally miserable and nothing they accomplish will hold any meaning (that's why so many of them became bad parents).
Even the late 70s and 80s were, again, shitshows to a lot of people who lived through them. It's easy to go "Star Wars... vgh so sovlfvl..." today, but you want to know what people who actually like science fiction said at the time?
>And all I can think about, in childlike wonder, is that amazing scene in the 1939 version of The Thief of Bagdad where Ahbhu, the little thief, uncorks the bottle and lets out the seventy-foot-tall genie. And I ask myself: If Star Wars is so goddamn good, howzacome all I can think about is a dumb fantasy made almost forty years ago, that taught me so much about fighting to stay free and individualism and love and the value of friendship and honor...?
>And why do I remember that moment of characterization when the evil vizier, Jaffar, as evil as Darth Vader any day, shows how vulnerable his love for the Caliph's daughter has made him? Was that movie less "entertaining" because the evil villain had a touch of identifiable humanity?
They fucking hated it because it compartmentalized an entire genre into being an extension of fantasy, and still being worse than proper fantasy works (plus it was the actual thing that ruined conventions forever).
Don't forget the 60s, a decaded marred by the fucking Vietnam war wherein everyone unequivocally lost.
Life sucks for everyone.

You guys realize Japanese high schoolers kidnapping a teenage girl and raping/torturing her for weeks resulting in her death, only to get off on light sentencing, is still relatively recent history right, like that happened after Gunbuster and Akira.

I would honestly say the 60s were among the worst decades to not be a weed addict of a businessman.
As for the others, every decade where you have to actually live like a human being and not as a child sucks, because you have to do all the work and you have to worry about economic and market factors. People here complain about blockbuster not existing when blockbuster's own existence was maligned in the 00s for having pushed out every independent retailer, leaving people's options for buying movies in the realm of supermarkets, other grossly huge chains, and blockbuster.

And I listed an event that occurred recently to boot. How about a guy burning down a building and killing 30 people, that was recent too, and wanna know why he did it? Because Japan is a society that breeds schizophrenics and he thought the guys in the building had plagiarized his fanfictions.

Osaka, 2021, guy lights a building on fire that kills everyone except one person, 27 dead. Guy also forced his son to commit suicide years prior. Reason why he did this? Nobody fucking knows.

Having your country run by cults is bad as well, but I suppose it's okay when Japan does it! It's okay when the last Prime Minister was good friends with a cult leader and promoted his cult! Again, any number is bad. For major spree killing incidents, Japan is going toe to toe with Canada, a country filled to the brim with migrants in addition to sharing a border with America, and prior to covid, Canada had fucking LESS incidents than Japan. For the 2010s, the breakdown is thus
>Four major incidents (Canada)
30 deaths
>Ten major incidents (Japan)
81 deaths.

There is a reason Japan is committing societal suicide and not fucking. Nobody likes it there. It's one big dead end for everyone there, including immigrants. Once you get past hollow tourist trap facades, you quickly realize the majority of its culture is eroded and solely maintained by people who do nothing but maintain it, and that the average Japanese person has turned every aspect of their being into a form of slavery.

Nope. The industry sabotaged physical media. They deliberately made it impossible to play without connecting to the internet to download the rest of the game in order to play. People rightfully shit on nintendo for their damn game key cards but Sony was doing this with CDs since the PS3.

I'm 37 the 90s was great. Imagine a world without fear. America had action comedies and culture coming out of Hollywood with proper acting chops behind it. Lots of places had close communities and people would hold to themselves personality and character when they open conversation. Everyone was getting by but you could always feel a sense of progress and purpose in people. Then America got scared, world news started to dramatize horrible events in the world and try to make it your problem. Corporations went from competitive to solidified monopolies or Oligarchies fucking around markets to crush smaller competition and set prices. We had accelerated advancement for the next 8 years but by 2008 it felt like everything started to stall, but the price still went up.

When I was around 8-9 I could walk into a GAME store (the company doesn't exist anymore) and the aisle would be packed with both new releases and classics. There was also an even spread of pc games in relation to consoles. I went back to one of their central locations in my country back around 2020; they had a few new releases on display, but no real order other than that. Their 'bargain' aisle was a complete mismatch of different discount console titles, and the oc games were practically nonexistent. I found an expansion disc for D2 and asked the klerk if they also had the base game in store, he just shook his head. They were literally selling expansion discs which were unplayable without the base game (unless you pirate the base but then what's even the point of buying the expansion...)

I wish I was so lucky back then. I had a few games to pick out at walmart and if it wasn't there you were shit out of luck. I never got to play Banjo Tooie or Snowboard Kids 2 and I am still seething.

I don't think glorifying consumerism is the way to go. Sure I had fun playing games but I miss being outside more, playing in the mud.

Retro means not in use anymore
Vintage means 20 in french so it LITERALLY means 20 years old and was used for wines.

Most malls went extinct too....atleast in NA because in tacoland they are still opening new ones from time on time however covid did a real number on them, lots of stores closed up permanently and it wasn't till last year that someone new rented the space.

Popping back in to say I agree with this 100% and I'm 36. The suits squeeze you for as much as they can with lower hours and personnel while expecting more work than before to be accomplished. I moved back in with my folks and only work 28ish hours now, and while I'm still miserable at work I do enjoy my days off. That's more important than making slightly more money.
I encourage anyone else feeling like this to move home and work less for your own happiness.

No, I don't have sympathy for spoiled brats who upload crybaby videos on the internet for cheap and free sympathy. It's pathetic. Get a grip, most of us are struggling to get by and aren't attentionwhore pisscrying on the internet for a pat on the back about it. I don't care about people who do things for attention because they feel sad, there is nothing wrong with this.

Modern video game stores have maybe 10% dedicated to actual video games, the rest 90% dedicated to plushies, mugs, board games, Warhammer figures and everything you can think of. We are in a situation where people don't go to a video game store to buy video games.

You'd grab the yellow slip and take it to the dude then he'd disappear into the little white shack for like 10 fucking minutes before returning with your game.

I'm 40 and I never got into video games until I was 15. Culture took a massive swing when ghetto nigger music and baggy pants were popular. All of my friends who used to hang out at the recreation center, playing baseball riding go karts mini golf sometime play arcade games, all them suddenly just wanted to listen to nigger music with the word fuck blasted every 10 seconds and smoke weed. I hated that shit. I retreated to be an indoor neet and play video games all day long because of it. I want the early 90s to comeback.
