A lot of monster designs in 2nd get fit the first well, while the modern ones can't settle for anything

all the essence was in the first two gens.

The games are made to appeal to 6 year olds, they'd never be able to wrap their head around what Trick Room does let alone some of the more esoteric interactions.
In the older games there was enough shit with the battle facilities to get the most out of the battle system so it wasn't a big problem, kids got their fix with the campaign and people that wanted to dive in deeper had the Battle Frontier, but nowadays even adults going back to play the old games don't bother with anything after the credits.

what is the best romhack/essentials game for the story? added pokemon or forms are a plus. i am fine with whatever gameplay but i'm not sure i can stomach something like reborn's psuedo-puzzle shit where there are "correct" solutions to battles that the game is partially designed around.
