YYH is a really interesting case because it is three distinct eras.
You open with Yusuke as a ghost and get your poltergeist adventures which are kind of like an X-Files/Kolchack style 'supernatural happening of the week' and involve almost 0 action outside of the VERY occasional fistfight which is almost always a one sided stomp. This lasts until Yusuke gets his body back (duh).
The second era is when there is still some commitment to the 'underworld detective' angle. There are cases and gadgets and 'mystery' and Yusuke (and later Kuwabara + Hiei + Kurama) face various challenges/obstacles that lead up to saving the day. This era would include the Dark Treasures, Rando, Suzaku, and Yukina arcs.
Then you shift into the last era which is just full on battle shonen. Dark Tournament and the Black Chapter are really just 'fight this guy then this new guy until you make it to the big boss at the end'.
You could argue that the battle shonen starts with Suzaku/end of Rando arc if you really wanted to but I do feel that there is at least a little bit of a difference between them thematically and what would come later.
Anyway, the really interesting part is that all 3 eras are fantastic. Normally a series moving away from one style to switch to another (eg., Dragon ball switching from 'explore the world to collect dragonballs' to 'save the world from big bad of the season' or Yugioh going from 'psychopath beats people at fucked up games' to 'card game battle shonen') either vastly improves or vastly degrades the quality of the series, but YYH is the only series I can think of where the vast changes in tone are not detriments and each era is superb.
