I only played on a private server back in the day. I stopped playing after WotLK came out, I played a lot and was getting bored of the game and most people I was friends with and the guild I was in were getting inactive too. That's the last time I really played. At one point (before WoW Classic was a thing) another friend convinced a few of us to try a WoW vanilla server, played a while but we also got bored and stopped, didn't even make it to 60.

At the tail end of TBC when they let all the casual trash into Black Temple. The downward trend was obvious even before when they gave the PVP losers specific gear designed to fuck over raiders - and had the audacity to share the raider sets' graphics with those. WarCraft 3 was already supposed to be something closer to Sacrifice or Spellfore, with RPG progression and leveling armies that you keep between maps.
We only got the WarCraft 3 we know today because Blizzard spun the RPG idea off into what would become WoW down the line.

after that I would play 1-3 months per xpac casually, I'd level a couple toons and do arena then quit soon after
I skipped WoD and SL entirely. I started again during the last week of DF while I was going through some shit irl and ended up no-lifing the entire year of 2023, raided for the first time since ICC/Ruby Sanctum and did M+ for the first time ever
I got a CE in DF S2 as a MW and got 5 toons to 3-3.3k io that season
I quit around Christmas 2023 and only came back for about a week when TWW dropped, hit max level and never logged back in.
I'm over it and will likely never play again. In 2023 I spent thousands of hours playing WoW and didn't touch a single other game. in 2024 I finished ~35 games while working full time and this year I just finished my 49th game today while NEETing. I am so much more fulfilled actually playing and finishing multiple games/series. the golden ages of mmo's are dead and the game is full of fags now.

Uh,early 2019 I think. I just couldn't do it anymore with BfA, it doubled down on all the bad aspects of Legion without keeping ANY of the things I enjoyed.
That being said, Classic and Season of Discovery were fun for a while. I played some TBC Classic but Wrath Classic just didn't hit the same as the Wrath private server did for me.

In WoD because the content was shit and there was barely any of it, and Garrisons had killed the social aspect of the game along with some other frustrating time-wasting aspects. Tried coming back in Legion but they made the game too obnoxious with shit like the AP grinding that was designed to screw you over if you missed a week, Mythic+ which destroyed the value and respect toward gearing (get decked out immediately without raids + the associated consequences with boosting culture), and it retained garrison's worst feature the fucking mission table which added more stupid variables you had to keep tabs on in order to maintain your character. Maintaining one single main character was a frustrating nightmare, alts were impossible. The game turned into a headache.

Played Vanilla shortly after launch and then deleted my character during TBC shortly before WOTLK arrived - was mostly a PvE warrior, i really enjoyed running 5 man dungeons and helping out low-levels randomly, didn't even charge people for runs, i would just hang out by ZF, Sunken Temple, SM or any of the other places like scholo and just do runs all day long between raids with the guild. Sometimes I'd dip into BGs but I never really got that good at the PvP. I finally got so fed up with trying to get raids going after being in a few guilds over the years. always showing up and feeling like i was dragging people through the raids, guess I never really got into a solid guild so I got burned out by the time TBC was winding down. I really miss it sometimes, a good amount of my IRL friends from high school played both on horde with me and on alliance against us so it was really cool seeing people out in the world from time to time. I miss exploring all the zones. A friend offered me his account during WOTLK since he was in college becoming a teacher and didn't have much time to play and I was working full time but had my nights free. played on that for a bit but I never reactivated my own account or got back into the game after that point. At this point everyone who still plays that I know is on different servers which might not matter much since there's cross-sever stuff but the game itself just seems so odd now with how friendly the horde and alliance were getting as the expansions went on, seeing stuff like the pandas become real and sylvannas becoming kerrigan 2.0 from an outsiders perspective was really odd. I dabbled in GW2 for a few years casually and did almost 5 years of FF14 which I really enjoyed but it never captured that scale that WoW had or the mystery to the world. For everything FF14 did right, WoW just had this world you could load into and walk or ride your mount in any direction and seemingly keep going.

I noticed the game was getting watered down then they announced they were turning an April Fools joke in to actual content. Plus Diablo III was trash. Blizzard just couldnt make good video games anymore. Even Chris Metzen can't save it. Nothing short of firing 80% of the staff and moving HQ to Texas could save Blizzard at this point. Battle for Azeroth. I was okay with it and other Blizz titles at that point, but then some Chinese shit happened in Hearthstone and I couldn't justify giving the company any of my money or time.

I quit everything right then and there and it stayed that way for months. It sucked too because I didn't even want to do my final log in spots for my characters. My main is probably still in Boralus, if it exists at all.
Anyway, a lot of the virtue signaling died down from the incident but I still wanted to hold myself to SOME kind of moral standard so I spending money on Blizz stuff, so I was just f2p on Hearthstone and Overwatch since. I also quit overwatch for the PvE bait and switch.

Honestly, I would come back and have been tempted before but then Blizz manages to remind me they are in fact a soulless money extractor and that the community isn't something to be fostered but exploited.

I quit twice.
The first time was in the first few months of Legion. I was playing the game so hard and consistently I would never miss a single world quest (I even set alarms and got up for the 2 hour pvp world quests until they spread their timers out more.) I think I just burnt out when I realized I was playing the shit out of this game and not liking it much anymore, and I went to play something else.
Then some irl friends wanted me to come back and play with them during Shadowlands launch and the EXACT same situation happened--I played hard, catching all my lockouts, progression, world quests, etc, and burnt out.
So I guess the why is that there was so much shit to do it drove me crazy.

Then, trying to recover my account, they wouldn't accept my proof of identity because it was issued in a different country than the one I was living in at the time of signing up for my WoW account.

-I actually liked the *plot updates in Cataclysm to the old zones, but their new zone/level design where everything was a rigidly self-contained, isolated, "theme park", where you would stay in one place being guided on a rail, was dog shit. It ruined the organic inter-connected nature present in the "world" of warcraft.
-Blood Elves was a bad mistake they never really recovered from, but Panderan was the disease that turned a dormant auto-immune disorder into actual AIDS. I really respected WoW's initial design philosophy when it came to "faction races need to have tight, similar, silhouettes for clear immediate identification" (it was why all the horde races were hunch-backs).
-*The plot was just getting fucking stupid. The dragons gave up their immortal, wait they got it back, time travel, there must always be a lich king, etc.. I can't even pretend to keep up. In no reality would Dalaran ever be a neutral faction.
-Literally every expansion, and then once again at the end of every expansion, they'd completely change how pvp and dungeon content would operate and I wasn't gonna put up with it anymore.
-They were doing this odd thing where they were trying to pull us away from our capitals and to these shitty unfun artificial microcosms?

Around mid wrath. Much of the social aspects of the game was dead with global chat, group finder, dungeon teleporting and flying. But what really ruined it for me was the daily missions/heroics.
Everything started to feel like a chore instead. I've tried getting back into it a few times after that point. In Legion, which I kind of liked and a last time in Shadowlands, which I didn't like.
