I prefer windows because thankfully they're still using the same exact windows kernel since Windows NT, so every bullshit Jeet software contraption they try to shoehorn can easily be disabled by tweaking the registry. It's literally a 5 minute task, and then the OS can be used normally.

It's not the same on Linux. I have raspbian on my raspberry since I like to pirate virtually everything, and having a transmission client running 24/7 remotely accessible is actually useful. For the first fucking time I had to use chat-gpt because forums were useless in explaining how to setup samba and transmission to run at startup and to actually configure them. It wasn't hard after I got the gist of it, but I can't imagine doing that for everything on my main PC.

I'm enjoying having swapped to linux but there are just a few things that can be troublesome.
Running games that use mods or external mod loading tools can be very fickle
Certain online multiplayer games don't work either.
Having said that, running through lutris and proton makes most games work just fine.

LTSC takes like five minutes to install unless you wanna get more involved with the install by modifying the ISO, which I wouldn't recommend unless you know what you're doing. /fwt/ over on /g/ has a decent guide otherwise. You don't even have to pay for it or jump through any real hoops to get the ISO, the activation script is legitimate. You download the image, flash it to a boot disk, install it, then run a powershell script to activate it, it's so easy a 60 IQ monkey could do it. I installed 10 IoT LTSC on my first PC build and it was relatively easy. At worst I had to jump through one or two hoops to download some missing drivers but so far my PC has been running flawlessly, and activating Windows is as searching massgrave and running a script which takes less than a minute.

My concern right now is that I have a 5+ year old laptop with W10 Home, and by old I mean 4GB of soldered RAM and a 125 GB SSD, but other than the battery being completely dead and need of replacement and Wi-Fi unable to detect 5G, it's still running fine, so now I need to look into how to replace the OS while keeping all of the files, since my mom also uses it and she has a lot of information there. Worst case scenario, I'll just back everything up in my external HDD and do a clean install.

Won't lie and say I didn't need to fiddle, but most shit worked out of the box (and better than Windows) and the remaining tinkershit ran better after that was said and done. So far I haven't run into a game that just flat out won't work. I play the full spectrum of crap from old emulated games to modern anti-cheat infested slop, to modded bethshit. Strangely the most annoying game to get working was DoW2, which was supposedly native, but it was easy once I found out how you're actually supposed to run it. I'd say the easiest no-fuss games are either ancient or modern, while the sour spot is late 00s early 10s.

The way wine works is by intercepting Windows API calls and then translate them into equivalent POSIX syscalls. A malware can depend on syscalls that are not well implemented or not implemented at all, reason why it is harder do make non-game software work, like Photoshop.

Also, malware might be targeting well know paths, like your browser session that is usually in C:\, wine will expose the root filesystem in something like X:\ but if it doesn't have the right permissions, malware won't be able to do much damage. There is no 100% safe system and the user can always do really dumb shit.

Getting modded FNV to work was the first and one of the easiest things I had to do. Not sure if you'd consider it out of the box, but the only extra step was running the modding software through steam so it could run through Proton. Depends, sometime it'll detect that you're on Windows 7 and will update to the last working update, sometime it says fuck it and installs the latest update, so Steam won't open and you need to downgrade it first, but then it won't try to update again afterward thankfully.
