The catharsis of the story is the final showdown with Temu Col. Kurtz, and that is where the only important choice of the game is made.
Do you agree with the scolding he gives you? I had a friend who did, and had Walker shoot himself. I didn't, and had Walker shoot Kurtz then get rescued by the soldiers because fuck it, he may recover.
Different people will arrive to different conclusions at the ending and make their choice, with one option being shooting Kurtz and by extension the writers, to stick their chastising up their asses.
