mentioned, and can only corrupt a vessel that has thoughts. The reason so many vessels were created is because the pale king kept failing to create a perfect one with no mind. In the end the Hollow Knight was corrupted because he felt affection. It's ambiguous as to whether or not the player's knight would make a better vessel, but the true ending has you kill her instead of seal her inside yourself anyway.

I think the self-stab moments are when the Hollow Knight regains some control over himself. The shift in the music makes it seem like that. Also the longer the fight goes on the less he directly attacks the player with his nail or void magic, and the more we see his body being dragged and hurled around like a helpless puppet. By the end whenever the Radiance doesn't control his bod, he just weakly walks toward the player without putting up much of a fight - or he just stabs himself repeatedly.

The pale king was a godlike being who creates the kingdom of hallownest and imbues his bug citizens with sentience. There was another godlike being called the radiance who predates this and was worshipped by moth people. The moth people see how cool the pale king is and start worshipping him instead, so the radiance is forgotten… until an old statue of the radiance is dug up and bugs start to remember. This corruption spreads through the kingdom, causing bugs to become mindless beasts once again, basically enslaved by the radiance.
The pale king tries to fight this by creating a pure vessel with no mind or emotions that can absorb the corruption/memory of the radiance completely and then be sealed away, saving everybody else. This is the Hollow Knight. But it did have a mind/emotions, so it didn’t work, so the kingdom continues to get more and more fucked.
The king actually made a fuckload of attempts to make a perfect vessel, created using “the void,” an ancient shadowy magic. You play as one who left the kingdom and returned.
With the help of the king’s daughter, you can break the seals and absorb the corruption, becoming the new hollow knight. Probably just delaying the inevitable. Or you can enter the hollow knight’s mind and kill the radiance for good.

The lighthouse being turned off allowed it to reach up to the palace grounds and you can clearly see it leaking out of the Kingsguards around him, as well as the whole upper level being noticeably darker than the rest of the palace. Doesn't seem like a smart move to hide your dreampalace inside a void creature right above a giant void lake, but it's pretty on-par for him. It's also likely why he wasn't able to be reborn, since being killed by a power directly opposed to his likely interfered with whatever would have happened in a more natural death.

Void isn't a god itself but it has the potential to become one or some such bullshit so it fucks with precognition.
Or maybe the foresight works by mind reading and void is mindless, or it's a Laplace's demon situation where he's calculated every possible outcome but void doesn't play by the rules.

I don't disagree, the Radiance, Pale King, and likely all pale beings clearly have some sort of light-based essence, so the void being physical darkness would obviously be harmful to them. You're right that the Void, without something like Shade Lord, isn't antagonistic. I don't think it even killed PK on purpose since it doesn't have a mind, he just put himself in a position where he died due to overexposure since he grew too comfortable and didn't take proper precautions when working with/around a highly toxic substance.

it wasn't able to contain the radiance influence within the HK and was only able to defeat it after the knight was able to unite the void
