I'm at 25 minutes into the video and it seems like despite them wanting it to be like Saints Row 2 as he stated they still kept leaning into direction of The Third? and adding in whacky stuff seen in the later games. It's almost like this video keeps contradicting itself in ways since it's still far off the serious tone of 2. I actually played through it recently via the family share thing on Steam. If you skip all cutscenes it's actually an extremely short game as there are only a few story missions and the all the rest are simply doing Ventures (just Activities from SR1-4 but usually worse and jankier). It's essentially feels like a mod of Saints Row 3 with worse animations, worse character creator (despite what they said, it's much worse than SR3/4), worse clothing and thus worse customization. About the only 'good' thing about is that it actually has a day/night cycle working which is funny as SR1 and 2 had it but 3 and 4 didn't as it was 'too hard'.

Alright but why did they have to get rid of their in Saints Row engine? or even whatever the engine they used for Agents of Mayhem? Was it because of the memory limits as to why they went to Unreal Engine? that was a common theme in the the video and the main points of what held the game back during development. Because that in my opinion killed this game harder than anything else. Like Saints Row reboot shares similarities in how bad it feels to play MindsEye. The driving feels bad, the physics feel bad. Just about everything feels bad. Even if they had their more ideal game it would have still been shit if it ended up on what they settled on.

Nobody is telling these dev studios "make the writing shittier and the gameplay worse". Even if they were somehow demanding games to be more diverse, you can still do good things with that mandate. Saints Row reboot isn't good in any way. It's clunky, uninspired, lazy, unpolished, shittily written, not funny and forgettable. Having bad jokes and worse gameplay was not a fucking publisher mandate.

I find it hard to feel bad about this because in my mind, SR as a series only exists at this point because of random chance. SR survived because SR2 came out during the time of GTA4, which was very serious, very dour, not very whimsical. SR2 on the other hand felt like the "real" GTA with its mix of whimsy and fun and satire and yes, some serious parts. But that was it, it was a market coincidence.
But they took all the wrong lessons from this scenario and SR became this super wacky tobaccy franchise with very little relation to reality. And I personally didn't give a shit about any of that. It's like they heard "oh ppl didnt like GTA4 and they liked our wackiness, time to go fucking full looney tunes" and they basically abandoned the identity of the series in pursuit of this supposed niche in the market.

If the game itself was amazing but the writing sucked ass, then maybe, but the game's writing is only one part of why the game ended up being so awful.

There's also a bit too much of this "oh yeah well the whole game would've been SR2+3 but better and PERFECT with tons and tons of content, but nope, sorry lol" for my tastes, especially after 3+4+GooH. That's a long time for a dev to suddenly go "okay we're just gonna 180 out of nowhere" and release exactly the game fans want.
I also think we would've heard a dev say SOMETHING bad by now too, someone saying how they wish they could've done this or that, or that censorship made X or Y impossible, but nah, 14 years since SR3 and suddenly this Youtuber starts listing off reasons why it's not the fault of the devs and how amazing the game was going to be despite the devs' previous track record.
