It was spearheaded by American corporations, though non-American western corpos like the Frenchies at Ubisoft followed suit, so I'm not gonna act like the Euros were saints here. In HOMM you can do a lot of stuff to inflate your army. Random dwellings, convert your enemies, use diplomacy (kek) and so on and so forth. Top that with the the weekly supply from as many bases as you can hold it's a far more forgiving system if used right.
In KB every unit has a price tag on them, and since money AND amount of units is finite in the game, and there are very few ways to get new units beyond recruiting their dwindling supply, it means that every dead unit is a direct reduction in chance that you'll beat the game.

It's not as harsh as I'm making it out to be but I beat the KB The Legend on impossible and trust me when I say you'll be far more caught up in counting your dead allies than counting your dead foes.

Honestly, tried it, and it's kinda bad. It lacks basic RTS controls and there's this funny but game-breaking bug where friendly NPCs will randomly attack you. Unrelated when the hunters you've assigned run out of food they'll start hunting neutral human NPCs in towns and villages.
The only reason the game is passable is because it's fun to build your hero and the combat is so easy it practically doesn't need advanced RTS controls. What's weird is that the controls weren't even improved on in the sequel, it was another case of "everything is just slightly worse than the first game".

Really? I got it on the first map, the turtorial and pretty much every single one after. Maybe I just got a weird patch or something because I had to actively un-assign my hunters because they'd get desperate and hunt the locals.
The randomly attacking friendlies only happened 2-3 times as I played it, but since they're still tagged friendly you can't fight back and they'll never drop aggro so the only thing you can do is either die (which causes them to fuck off back to their happy-neutral NPC state) or run through a portal.

As mentioned though, the game isn't bad because it has a few sometimes-funny bugs, it's bad because it's easy, insanely slow (even for an RTS) and is mechanically boring. Every one of these RPG-RTS games that came out after Warcraft 3 have to, eventually, be compared to Warcraft 3 and beyond a slightly deeper stat-focus Spellforce is pretty much just an inferior downgrade in every way.

some of these quests have alternate routes or even rewards for failing them has made me realize I have no idea what is optimal anymore. Like that pirate who wants you to find his treasure bottles you can steal his treasure and cash in the quest for exp or you can both steal his treasure and confront him to fight him and have a chance to use your dragon to dig up treasure or find chests in the fight or maybe even get an item after killing him but you dont get the gold and xp rewards.
