Not even basic physics and being aware of the fact that when you slam a monster with a pipe, the force is also transferred back.
You're not making god of war where you get SAVAGE BRUTAL NASTY ASSRAPE 666 hit combo nor you are making God Hand LVL DIE where you juggle enemies, animationcancel every hit inbetween dodge weaves.
You are making a HORROR VIDEO GAME, so the combat should feel tense. You play a teenage girl with a lead pipe, why is she making michael jackson moonwalk phase shift dodges while her pipe doesn't even connect with the enemies to deal damage or use the reach?

If you staggered enemies for variable duration that's between marginally, slightly longer or equal to the time it takes for you to recover from the swing the combat would work.
Trying to dodge twice in a row should make you fall over
The devs should also understand reach in melee or even hand to hand combat.
In a horror game you shouldn't allow a first time player to grow comfortable with just fighting enemies or the horror fizzles out.

Fighting monsters in horror games absolutely works like was shown in the penumbra games.
But the character's fighting ability should be relevant to the setting.
In example a schoolgirl should not be able to fight like a blood pumped hunter.
