Too difficult to build and render. You need realistic water effects, the ocean needs to be dynamic along with the sand, which can't just generate footprints as you walk on it anymore, the sand needs to have its own physics system. It's easier to just spend 3 years making a forest.

Innovation is the only thing that turns the wheel of modern gaming. Anyone can make small improvements to what's already there. Anyone can make an indie game. But the only reason gaming isn't dead is because we're getting new games with new ideas, and more importantly, next-gen graphics. People don't just want a game, they want to be wowed by the realistic shaders, textures and dynamic ray-traced lighting, and that requires half a decade of development time just to create an empty open world that we haphazardly add missions to right before release.

Exactly, which is what new games have to compete with. That's why gaming HAS to have amazing graphics that take 5 years to make or it's dead in the water. That means you're getting forests and mountains instead of beaches and you will like it.

I feel like it was probably something unique to Japanese culture, but becoming a more globally minded industry they pretty much dropped it. People are already living in tropical places so it's not exotic to them anymore and others are just depressed and cynical that they don't care about going to an idealistic tropical place in a video game.

Salarymen had a bunch of kino cheap holidays in those eras, got sent back to the Japanese work gulags and started pining for better times. It's the reason there's a huge glut of tropical style games that then suddenly die off into grey/brown piss filter shit games. Their souls finally died.

I feel like the early 2000s had way more beach themes in media, spring break tropical vacations were big in pop culture and tanning was still huge. then 9/11 hit, mill sims and the great brown filtering started to happen and games started getting more "mature", with the beach games feeling childish in comparison.

A few years ago (or longer maybe i donno) somebody made the observation that the tropical beachfront aesthetic was rather common in the early 2000s and then seemingly died out one day. Ever since that observation was made, it's become a pet issue for a lot of people. Now every time they get reminded of this supposed phenomenon they go make a thread about it.

For what it's worth, I think the water themed layers in DK Bananza matched this early 2000's beach aesthetic pretty well but I see your points. It's more an observation that aesthetic design philosophies have majorly shifted towards less interesting realism, which should already have been obvious over the past two decades. GTA VI might have some nice looking beaches.

It was popular in the late 90s to early 2000s. The term is used to describe user interfaces, but it's essentially become a term for the Y2K aesthetic. It existed into the rest of the 2000s in user interface form only. There may have been a few games, like Mirror's Edge, that somewhat fit the bill. Mirror's Edge was more like the maturation of the aesthetic.

There's multiple aesthetics and trends that are being grouped together, but they're all related. I think it starts with the beach island games and the Y2K aesthetic in the late 90s to 2000 and then becomes the Frutiger Aero aesthetic (Bubbly shaped electronics, Apple computers with the different colors) then the UI Frutiger Aero aesthetic continued until 2010s. The rise of HD tv/video also brought back a bit of the aesthetic outside of UI. The sleek HD look of late 2000s is somewhat reminiscent of Frutiger Aero. The peak years definitely centered around Y2K and 9/11. I remember by 2004 it seemed outdated. Like i said it survived in UI, but it morphed and matured into the shiny HD look.

Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were built specifically for the Sega Dreamcast's SH4 CPU.

Dreamcast goes all out on transparency and lighting, supports 8-bit destination alpha blending with 24-bit sourcing 32-bit z-buffer, Saturn and Dreamcast diffuse+specular lightning based on palette indices, Dreamcast used tile layered deferred rendering which supported order independent transparency. the Egg Carrier in Sky Chase appears to be rendered using the functions that ignore palette lighting, and thus it is using Ninja Lights set up in the SL file.

Technically SA1 does have dynamic lighting effects, but you can't see them because they almost always get overridden with palette lighting. They were certainly meant to be in the game at some earlier point, though.

Sonic Adventure 1 was highly downgraded in terms of lighting on on the GC. SA2 lacked a bunch of shadowing effects which used the DC's modifier volumes. SA2 DC abused the Dreamcast's volumetric fog features for some interesting effects, like security alarms (Iron Gate, Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) and approximated "rain waves" (White Jungle). These effects are gone in SA2B, replaced with full-screen overlays (Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) or with a rotating vertex light (Iron Gate)

Sega changed SA1's palette based lighting to specular lighting in DX GC port and they barely even used it. SA2 CnkMultiDraw does support Vertex color + Lighting though used in Events

The porting team likely ran into problems implementing palette lighting, so they figured it would be easier to just update everything that didn't work immediately after they were brought over to SADX. Even SA2B doesn't use specular in the same way the DC version uses it.

That's what happens when the Dreamcast is the only system with hardware support for OIT lol

Fun fact, sonic heroes started on dreamcast and it ran fine. Ironically even in the early stages it ran at 60hz, unlike the shitty ps2 port.

According to legend, Sonic Heroes was originally going to be on Gamecube and XBox only. However, Sony told SEGA the same thing they had told Capcom numerous times: “Release this on Playstation 2 or you'll never be allowed to release games on a Sony brand console ever again”. The PS2 was the dominant console that generation and being prevented from releasing titles on it could doom a company. However, SEGA was terrible at programming for the PS2. They had even produced a number of Dreamcast titles in the past that flat-out could not be done on PS2. But now, SEGA had to take a title they had already partially finished and move it from it's own proprietary engine to something that could easily be ported to all three consoles: Renderware. This sudden engine shift probably put them far behind schedule and messed up any chance to really polish the game as much as it needed to be. This caused SEGA to produce yet another sub-Adventure title.

I was there, and I'll say there is enough conceptual overlap between Frutiger Areo and Mario Sunshine to call them pretty much the same thing.
Even the Gamecube itself has frutiger aero design cues. The prototype was called "dolphin" - there was sort of an effort to make things feel like TV/Computer screens were a portal into a cool digital world, and Mario Sunshine was a digital re-creation of a tropical paradise.

This is all frutiger aero adjacent.
It's also 00's tropic-core or whatever you want to call it, but they co-exist.

You are wrong, they have nothing in common, "Frutiger Aero" is abstract, futuristic, corporate, and clean, and emerged in the mid-to-late 2000s and continued into the early 2010s, meanwhile the tropical vibe of the games in this thread is organic, exotic, and tribal (complete opposite of the clean and corporate branding) and spans the late 90s and early 00s, Gamecube itself was Y2K

Conflating these two is as wrong as thinking we had YouTube in the 90s, don't let zoomers brainwash you with their lack of knowledge

Idk. The OP pic and most of the games posted from the 00's are "frutiger areo" adjacent enough for me to call this a Frutiger Areo thread.
Even though it wasn't from the late 00's era aesthetic people call "Frutiger Areo" I still consider things like Halo to fall into the category, because it hits all the same broad strokes. Esp. the "White, Green, Blue" color palette + blending of pristine natural environments with advanced technology.

Although I could agree that we maybe need a better word for this whole genre of imagery.

There's your issue, Halo itself is not part of the beach vibe, whenever we used to have beach nostalgia threads 10-15 years ago Halo itself was never posted, it was a very recent addition to these threads

Like I said the beach vibe in these games was tropical and exotic and came from real world inspirations, whereas Halo's was just wallpaper-y and contextless oceans and skies, that does mean it's closer to the later "Frutiger Aero" aesthetic which could be what's confusing you

We were for 6-7 years already, around 2005 it felt like someone flipped a switch and we went from colorful optimism to brown and bloom, you can see how quickly it happened in Jak 1 vs Jak 2 and Wind Waker vs Twilight Princess, around 2010 people were already sick of it

It's true that there was a move towards "realism" in the mid-2000s, but the beach aesthetics managed to survive a bit longer into the early '10s.

I didn't say it was, I said they were born out of the same tropical vibe zeitgeist of the late 90s and early 00s, which is distinctly different to frutiger aero which was futuristic, clean, and abstract, I said we had beach threads with Sunshine, Wind Waker, Chrono Cross etc, but never Halo because it wasn't tropical, that was later confusion added by zoomers
