Savepoints and checkpoints tend to be different systems, since savepoints are usually more rare and may take resources to use. That adds more risk to the gameplay and forces players to make decisions about how they proceed, compared to checkpoints where it's usually possible to brute force whatever you're facing. They are different design philosophies, and metroidvanias have been better served by using savepoints rather than checkpoints imo.

In this game, the bosses are challenging and elaborate enough that they are basically levels in their own right. That's why I think runbacks are a weird design choice for this type of game. The runbacks and some bosses are the only times I get annoyed with the game, but when that does happen I get REALLY annoyed with the game.
It feels really bad, I don't know what they were thinking with the runbacks. That shit just sucks any enjoyment out of me. At least stop the double damage meme so I can learn the patterns, which is the intention anyways.

I hate that every option other than wanderer is pure ass to use on the walk back and realistically in the boss fight where every mob spam fight devolves into 4 minutes of pogoing until you actually get to progress and try to kill the guy that matters

All my options that I've went out to search for feel literally useless. Beast and the base form have awful down attacks that don't mesh well with how the boss ai works and moves around. I've tried using Wanderer but the short range is actually fucking me hard. The poison bug bots I'm using probably don't hurt him enough as I'd want them to.

It's just soul crushing. How did they manage to figure out the anti-magma pin was a good idea and then they just never do it for the dogshit poison swamp area? God bless the people who did that boss walk and killed him not knowing there was a secret bench closer to the boss either

Because it usually artificially inflates play time without really adding to the challenge. A bad runback makes playing the game feel like a punishment, a good one feels like a challenge to overcome.

The Last Judge runback is annoying, but it's a gauntlet that can be shortened significantly with clever platforming and quick thinking. It also gets you into fight mode so you're mentally ready for the boss.

The Moorwing runback is turbo cancer AIDS because It's a straight fucking line with six loading zones. There's nothing you can do to master it, you're stuck in a routine for at least 30 seconds even if you sprint the whole way. It lulls you into a boredom and makes you wish you were doing something else, that's why moorwing takes you by surprise every time you fight it.

The game is challenging consistency, not you save stating and throwing yourself at every platform 50 times until you stick the landing once. That's what beating a stage is. Getting from one end to the other with minimal mistakes. It's a metroidvania and you aren't being asked to clear individual rooms once, you're being asked to get from checkpoint A to checkpoint B in one piece, so yes you might have to go through a room more than once. Maybe your second attempt will be faster and smoother if you're capable of learning anything.
