Just beat this Masterpiece.

Eigong forced me to fully comprehend the parry system and all my options in between for every combo. It was awesome, besides that this game is really something special on all fronts, between story, presentation and artstyle.

I enjoyed it far more than Hollow Knight at least. I cannot speak for Silksong. But what i like about Nine Sols is that it has it's own unique setting, theme, character design, and gameplay that isn't exactly and totally derivative of other games. Moving options feel good, the map is largew and the FOV of your character always gives you control and vision of what youre facing and gives you tons of leverage on how best to approach it. I don't like a lot about Hollow Knight after playing it for a while, but I'd say it's comparing Sekiro to I Wanna Be the Guy.

The comic scenes alone, and all the growing background assets and actual color usage of Nine Sols puts way far and above HK/SS in art quality. The Fengs battle alone had so much in one room that it made it as memorable as a paint

Nine Sols is a lot more tightly focused. There's much more emphasis on character-based narrative, it's rarely ambiguous where to go or how to get there, and the exploration/platforming is fairly rote. The combat in Nine Sols has slightly more depth but is also much more defensively slanted in a way that leads to a lot of parry timing/facing but de-emphasizes positioning whereas Silksong is all movement and positioning. Both are extremely good but aiming for different things.

>>720138596
Maybe I'm wired wrong but after two hours repeating the same fight over and over again and slowly getting better it didn't feel epic. At some point you perfectly grasp the separation between her attack sequences, so the fight becomes
>parry attack you've already learned
>wait for her next move
>did you read it right? cool, parry and repeat
>was it one of the tricky moves and you read it wrong and misplayed? whoops, -50% health, find an opportunity to heal
>repeat until either eigong's 1000000 hp runs out or your pipe vials run out, whichever comes first
Being an endurance fight made it a lot less epic in the end.

Different kind of difficulty. Nine Sols is punishing but every situation typically has straightforward answers and your defensive options are extremely strong. Silksong requires a lot more movement and because the amount of area available is so vast it's very probable to get to places where you're intended to have stronger gear or different tools, but get fed to a woodchipper. On top of that you start with 5 HP and so much shit does 2 damage that even once you get four pieces of heart 6 isn't more than 5.

>She's really not hard as soon as you learn her attack patterns.
Of course things aren't hard once you learn them anon. But the learning is what people consider hard. If you go into a fight and lose, the fight for you should atomically register as "challenging" and if you lose 5-10-20+ times, the fight is most definitely hard. Every single fight isnt hard, once you know exactly what to do, huh?

You being over analytically and reductive doesn't change the experience. It's all those moments working in tandem that make the fight an experience. A solid portion of my play time was just understanding Eigongs attacks, how i can best retaliate, and what options/builds i could make to improve. It felt just like fight labbing a fighting game but in boss form. I screamed out when i got that last hit in. The final boss should be a final challenge of the game, to put to the test everything you learned, games forget this fact and always make a victory lap lately, so to have a final boss actually challenge the player, and put to the test the skills the game should have taught is master class.

I'm still seething that the robot fight achievement is so easily missable if you don't follow the EXACT exploration order necessary for it.
>see miniboss
>nowhere else in the game has there been a point in turning back when meeting a miniboss
>fight it around the center of the arena, because who would bother running all across the wide-ass room to the other side to see the locked mecha, and the miniboss isn't super mobile anyway so you can just sit around one spot and whack and parry it
>kill the boss, move on, see the locked mecha, "huh, I wonder what that's for"
>later exploring the other pathway
>buncha platforming later get to the miniboss room from above, with access to the mecha door switch
>unlock the mecha
>sit in it and walk around the miniboss arena like a dunce
How the fuck was I supposed to know?
It's also so far in the endgame, or I think at least 50% of the game through to even be able to access the area if you rush to it ASAP.

No but seriously my point was that even learning her attack patterns isn't hard. She has like three actually different slash combos, and sometimes she combines them in a few more variations but fundamentally it's the same three (four-slash move, one slash then dash forward, and three quick pokes). Then for her red attacks you need to learn to spot her teleporting upwards meaning it's going to be a slam, vs. just teleporting somewhere else which means it's gonna be another talisman grab attempt.
That's it, these are all you need to learn to be able to have a fighting chance against her. It takes a couple of minutes minutes to suss out the timing of her sword swipes and maybe 5-10 minutes to learn to differentiate the teleports. You've now solved the first two phases of the fight, everything else is basically piss easy except the phase 3 full screen slash which is the only "difficult" attack in her entire moveset.

The only reason it takes a while to beat eigong is because it's an endurance fight so you need perfect consistency. If you're 90% consistent at parrying her attacks you'll just run out of healing and health before you manage to kill her. It's not difficult, it's just training your muscle memory to parry it over and over again. When you're at 90% consistency you're parrying every attack except one in ten and then you still die, so you replay the battle and maybe you manage to parry 91% of attacks, still fuck up and die, replay the battle twenty more times and finally you get a good run where the amount of times you fucked up was low enough to outlast her.

It just doesn't feel "hard" when you're effortlessly parrying almost all attacks but the fight is just so long that eventually you fuck up and have to start all over again, continue effortlessly parrying and just pray your streak doesn't lapse this time around.

Good morning I am here to complain about the divine hand jade
>wow every parry after an unbound counter will automatically become an unbound counter
>awesome I will be able to unbound counter everything!! imagine the internal damage DPS!
>it fucking disables charging a new unbound counter while it's active, so there's a window of time after one parry where the next parry neither counts as an automatic unbound nor do you have enough time to charge a new unbound
What the shit. This seems like such an obvious issue with an extremely simple fix that it's gotta be intentional, but why did they make it this way? It's a late game jade that feels like it should be an upgrade in your damage but instead it's just a sidegrade for when you can parry.

You can precise parry it, even. But the only reason to even take that jade is to maximise the internal damage. If I'm just trading off being able to unbound some attacks against being able to unbound others, it's now very meh and seems like it requires re-learning all the timing of parries and counters in return for a very situational benefit.
For example Eigong's triple poke can be jade handed but not normally unbounded, so it gives you two extra unbounds after the first poke. But her four-slash sequence can be comfortably manually unbounded but not jade handed, so you have to unbound -> precise -> unbound -> precise (or vice-versa), so you LOSE two unbounded.
I think overall jade hand does give you slightly more internal damage, because there's a few special attacks (like her phase 2 sword beams, or the ghost triple slash behind her) which I think probably puts it over the edge overall, but I'm not even certain because of how often she does the basic sword attacks where you lose damage. And the big cost is again re-learning all the timings and muscle memory - I know right now when I can UB charge and when I need to precise parry, but now suddenly fuck you no there's a wide window where I cannot UB charge how I'm used to.

I know the latter is a skill issue but I'm just annoyed that it barely adds any damage and only on situational attacks, and loses you damage on plenty of other attacks. The description says nothing about it and it's very unintuitive, and I don't see why it'd be useful for balance.

They're "hard" but not in a way of "this is epic I'm finally parrying!" / "this is epic I can finally play this/draw well!". They're hard because they take years of practice to get good at, many thousands of hours to hone the skill.
Eigong takes like 3-5 hours to beat, maybe. If you practice drawing for 3-5 hours you might maybe with a bit of luck figure out very rough sketching motions, or learn the basics of hand movements for piano and learn some simple one-handed melodies. Most people wouldn't call playing simple melodies on one hand hard, for example.

If anything Eigong's "hardness" reminds me more of some speedrunning skip hardness, where you just grind for 2, 3, 10 hours and then you get lucky and hit the frame perfect pixel perfect skip and you're like "woohoo I did it!". But you don't particularly feel epic while you're in the process of grinding for it, it's mostly a slog followed by relief that you've finally gotten the achievement and don't need to keep mindlessly grinding anymore.

I don't disagree I just don't think it makes for an epic fight. There's no meaningful difference between being 90% consistent and being 95% consistent except that with the latter you have a good chance of outlasting Eigong and finally winning the fight.
I'm glad I did it, I would not have liked to have given up at the very end and I'm satisfied with my completion of the game. But I just don't feel like it was such an amazing moment like everyone says it was.

If anything, I also think it hurts the story pacing. You got a lot of very heavy development right before the end, then Yi steps forth for his final battle, and then he just respawns 50 times over for hours on end while the story takes a break as you grind it out. And then finally it picks up again and you have the (very well made and poignant) final cutscenes except they're rather less poignant for the massive interruption that just happened than if they had somehow managed to flow a bit more coherently with the pre-boss story.

Where I'll dispute that is the fact that once you understand how to beat Eigong, those lessons allow you to absolutely dismantle the rest of the game. She's a test of mastery that's an echelon above anything else in the game, and in that sense she's a bullshit difficulty spike that requires memorization and a complete reset of playstyle, but on replay it's clear that the playstyle that beats Eigong is the way the game is meant to be played.

I found the charged parry to be a suitable replacement for dodging, but I can fully understand people preferring the early game where those moves have to be avoided outright instead.

Goumang, Yanlao, Jiequan, and Ji all honestly needed an extra phase, even if some of their health pool got redistributed in the process. They all introduce an idea in their fights but all fail to fully expand on it in their respective second phases (or not at all in Goumang's case). Fuxi and Nu Wa also needed more patterns that aren't just solved by spamming air parry to cover both directions. Despite that, I think Fuxi (and obviously Eigong) are the best bosses in the game.

I'm not sure I agree there. Now this is with the caveat that I haven't replayed the entire game yet, but I did spend a little while re-doing the entire ending to get the other achievement plus a bit of extra exploration because I had missed a couple of jades, and I also spent some time messing around in battle memories against other bosses, so I do have a little bit of gameplay against both normal enemies and bosses after having beat eigong.
Maybe my fighting style against eigong was just bad or something, but it can be boiled down to "stand still, memorise the timing of her attack animations (especially since some of her sword slashes do the modern fromsoft windup freeze for some reason), and parry repeatedly". This is, by and large, the easiest strategy against all single enemies in the game, and I didn't need to reach the final boss to learn this. The other thing eigong taught me was her specific attack patterns, which is completely non-transferable since every enemy in the game has unique attack patterns and timings, and the first time you encounter a new enemy is always the most difficult as you have to learn those from scratch - and you can only get better by facing that same enemy repeatedly, to learn its specific timings better.

The only times when you don't want to use the "parry everything, strike back when there's an opening" strategy is either when there's multiple enemies, or when the enemies are weak and you wanna speed things up. The former happens a lot and Eigong does nothing to teach you multi-enemy coordination. The latter happens extremely often in normal gameplay - I rarely bother trying to perfect parry everything, I just parry to get some Qi and avoid damage while trying to get a bunch of sword swings in, then talisman for a strong enemy, or just sword to death for a weaker one.

The only thing eigong would have taught me is how to fight minibosses better but I had already learnt that by the end of the game.

Yes. Fortunately you can get by with the reaction parry (for the most part).

Unbounded Counter, on the other hand, is a pain in the ass since it's a predictive parry you can only hold about a second, locks you in place, and has to be charged. Was never any good at using it. But be warned that later fights will heavily incentivise mastering.

Pretty sure you can charge if you just hold the parry button after a consecutive unbound. I only use unbound counters against Eigong unless I'm in the air or it's her talisman, and you need to delay unbounds every now and then in her attack strings.

They probably fed the idea that apemen are spear/rock throwing cavemen who are beneath them and that being used like how they were was befitting for them. Heng was fsr less pushy but was far too out there spiritually to explain why she wouldn't want to leave to yi without it sounding cryptic and bordering on crazy.

And Yi was a lot more aggressive in getting his point across but also was at least willing to try something, which ended up go against Heng's mentality of accepting the fate the taos path was giving her and he didn't help when he said he wouldnt want a sister who would decide to die with the other "crazy" zealots.

There biggest mistake was likely not trying hard enough to just understand the others side and hear them out, only finding out way later why the other was so adamant on their choices.

Huh, are you using divine hand, and are you still able to UC the usual 4-slash sword attack for example?
The wiki apparently agrees with me: https://ninesols.wiki.gg/wiki/Divine_Hand_Jade
>The Divine Hand Jade can actually make it more awkward to use repeated Unbounded Counters against two attacks spaced apart by a certain longer delay. This is because the jade makes it impossible to perform normal parries during its ~0.65s activation window, so there is a brief window (from ~0.65s to ~1.15s after the previous Unbounded Counter) in which additional Unbounded Counters cannot be performed if standing still, neither by the Divine Hand effect nor by being charged conventionally.
But the wiki also mentions you can cancel the divine hand effect by moving which doesn't eliminate the issue but lets you charge a new UC sooner so maybe that's good enough to get it back in time for Eigong's normal attacks. I'll need to try that.

The fight is nice because it really lets you pick your preferred style, and showcases how differently you can approach combat by the end of the game when you have all the tools.
I think the most popular strategy is to ubnound counter as often as possible to maximise internal damage, and then water flow makes it easier to realise that damage but full control also lets you do a decent chunk on top of that, and you don't need to apply the internal damage too often except to actually end a phase (you can even beat an entire phase with just internal damage and then do a single 1-pip talisman to instantly one-shot her). So it doesn't matter too much.
You can even do Qi Blast and spam the azure bow a lot more often. There are not too many opportunities to use full control, so if you're going for a normal damage strategy then this may well be the better DPS option.

You could make a case for them being about as good, but can't say it's better. Nine Sols definitely has more engaging characterisation and storytelling, but Silksong's general exploration (e.g. area complexity, environmental variety) is superior. Other aspects, like music and combat, are more difficult to separate, as Ji and Hornet both have reasonably extensive toolkits/movement options by mid-game.

I agree, I think some of the other bosses really needed to be harder. A lot of them, when I beat them I still didn't feel like I had mastered them, just got a really good run through sheer luck.
Eigong went really far in the other direction, I felt like I had a good grasp of the fight long before I finally managed to get all the way through. It may not actually be the case but I feel like having beat her, I'm also not that far away from doing a no-hit run too if I really wanted to. Which as you said is fine for a final boss, but the other bosses just feel underwhelming in comparison.

I really wanted to like this game but it filtered me after 2-3 areas. It was just too hard, I sucked at the parry timing, and it became mind-numbing instead of fun, so I ended up dropping it. I suspect I misunderstood the proper parry timing or it was badly telegraphed because I just couldn't make sense of it. Sad because I was liking the systems in general, but I just knew that I'd end up inevitably getting walled later on.

When I first started the game I also found the parry timing rather unintuitive, but it's just how the game works. For a perfect parry you need to press the buttom 0.1 seconds before the hit, so if you overtune it and try to predict exactly when the attack will connect and press it a frame too late (or I think maybe on the same frame? I'm not sure of that detail), it's too late and won't register. And the imperfect parry mechanic lets you register a parry (with internal damage) up to 0.6s before the attack, so another half second too early for a perfect parry, but still adds zero leeway for parrying too late.
The result is that you need to learn to press the parry button just before the attack hits, not exactly the frame it hits. Specifically you need to aim for 0.05 seconds before, giving you +-0.05 seconds of leeway, and lean towards the side of making it a bit too early so you can at least get an imperfect parry if you fail. If you're always aiming your muscle memory for the exact frame where the attack visibly connects, any imprecision causing you to be even slightly too late will fail the parry entirely.

But the thing is I managed to improve my muscle memory and the way I read enemy attacks within the first or second area or so. I was still not fantastic at it and I was still dying a lot up to around the 4th or 5th areas but if you're really struggling to comprehend the timing at all after three areas then maybe the game just isn't for you, yeah. It's not just hard, it requires a very specific skill in timing and reaction which is not necessarily something everyone finds fun.

Bigger enemies just feel harder in this game because to me at least it feels harder to read the exact timing of their attacks and react to when I need to parry. Centaur beat my ass at the start of the game too.
But Goumang was even harder because you've got two niggers on your ass at all times and have to manage them both (and you normally don't have the bow at that point)

I also had a massive problem with the prison guy (kanghui I think, the one locked in stocks who begs you to kill him), and I only realised later that I forgot the bow exists and I should've used it a lot more so that was my fault, but without using the bow it was the most painful boss of all and felt ten times harder than eigong (even if it didn't take me as long to beat)

I'm >>720204059 and I just think huge enemies are really hard to read the timing of. It's also your first boss so coming in I wasn't super great at parrying in general yet and my timing even for normal enemies was shaky. I personally think it's about the right difficulty for a "hard game" with hard bosses, but he's definitely still pretty damn hard even if you're doing your absolute best to parry like a good goy (like I was).
Like, at that point you've probably fought maybe 2-3 enemies max that have a green attack you need to tai chi kick, and the muscle memory to jump up and do the mid-air kick is just not there yet so you have to consciously react to all of this, all while you're also consciously trying to adjust your parry timing because you're getting hit 30% of the time and getting imprecise parries 50% of the time.

And you probably only have two heals at that point.

Ethereal is incredibly fun, I don't know how or why but everyone seems to love her fight and so do I.
Maybe it's the fact that it's not too hard while also being extremely fast-paced and you're forced to keep up with her attacks and go fight off every new clone, thus pumping you with adrenaline and feeling exhilarating while also not being so hard that it's frustrating. And her phase 3 repeated green dash is kino when you realise what the attack pattern is and just perfectly counter like 5-6 red dashes and get rewarded with stunning her and an opportunity for a max power talisman.

Water flow is the best at that point I think since you only have the two qi anyway (I don't remember if it deals less damage than a 2-pip qi blast but if it is it can't be much). It was still incredibly nerve wracking to keep parrying both, stagger their kills to maximise goumang timing, and make sure I got a talisman off on her without getting fucked up by the other guy or mis-applying the talisman.
Plus again it's only the second fight in the game. I think if you had to fight both fuxi and nuwa in the arena it would've been kino and a really fun double battle (though what they went for is thematically cool too), but by the point of goumang I was better than with yingzhao but still not perfect at parrying

is about as good as it could've been, and, while far from perfect, would have been miles better than what we got. Goodbyes matter.
Of course to some degree that would have required at least Yi to entertain the idea of giving up on soience and giving in to the Tao, long before he was ever ready to accept the concept, so it would've been a rather out of character for him at that point. You win some you lose some, there was never a guarantee of success. And in a universe where Yi is self-aware enough to accept his sister's PoV he would probably also be a bit more open to the possibility of failure than in his canon state of being indoctrinated by Eigong (who never accepted failure even to the last). He'd do his best and realise it didn't work, oh well, it was their best shot and the alternative was just dying immediately anyway.

It's not from a single parry. Now you're right that it is quite punishing, a lot of enemies can take off 1/3rd of your health in one attack, and some stronger enemies can two-shot you (though it's a good bit rarer). But saying everything is a one-shot is an exaggeration.
The answer is simply to get good - it's normal to die a lot when starting out (which is one big reason I fucking HATE the corpse run mechanic, its only outcome is to fuck over new players for no reason, and to ever so slightly annoy experience players, and provide no reward or satisfaction to either). You're expected to be able to parry almost every single attack, and it's normal to not have a lot of leeway if you do get hit. Play more defensive, avoid challenging groups of enemies if possible, play analytical and focus carefully on enemy attack patterns, and use your bow when the level gets hard. If you can beeline the maxed out qi blast in the skill tree the bow becomes a lot more fun to use since you can recharge it.

And remember that an imprecise parry only deals internal damage which will heal back up. The ultimate goal is to be able to perfect parry everything and the game rewards you for it, but if you get an imprecise parry it's not the end of the world. If you're fighting an enemy that's really tough (or if you're stuck in a group of enemies) it may well be smart to retreat and heal back up if you feel like you're just gonna get hit and die.

Ironically by the endgame once I had gotten gud I was barely ever dying despite the enemies ramping up significantly in damage and health and speed and attack patterns. (Enemies keep 3-4 shotting you throughout the game even as you keep upgrading your health, by the way.) The game just half a learning curve this steep, about the first half of the game you'll be dying a lot to small simple early game enemies, and eventually you'll be parrying late game epic ninja enemies with minimal efforts.
