I think the boss fights are what elevates mgs1 over mgs3 for me. only the Boss got her moment in mgs3, other bosses just explode like something expendable. meanwhile in mgs1 every boss had his/her small story arc, his/her own worldview to pass on. heck when I replay mgs1 psycho mantis's last words cut deeper than anything else in the game, his dark nihilistic worldview still holds a lot of truth in it. and the death of sniper wolf was pure poetry, it's emotionally even stronger or on par with the Boss in mgs3.

In Underrail, there's a minor side quest where you meet some receptionist lady who ends up saving your life while helping you through a quest (in a game that up until now has had nobody help you with fucking ANYTHING, EVER), and afterword asks to meet for drinks later
But when she doesn't show up, you can check back where she works, and find out they offed her on basically no evidence/precaution because she might've been a corporate spy. Game gives you no follow-up, recourse, or any other content relating to this to even find out if it's she was even really a spy or not. You just have to walk away and pretend like it didn't matter, find some other quest to do.
Instead, I went on a killing spree in that office and killed like a dozen corpos there including the schmuck who ordered the hit, before they took me down, and then I immediately alt-F4'd, uninstalled the game, and deleted my save, because I decided that's how my character canonically would've met their end. Haven't played it since.

It gets better over time. When I originally played it I quite about 30-45 minutes in, right after you find the dead body. What you experienced is pretty much what the whole game is, but there's tons of different ways to experience pretty much every event and by the end it's pretty enjoyable. Generally if I play a game and there's Marxist rantings I quit right away, but this one became a lot better after awhile. I believe it is because most of the time the writers that are into Marxism use it as a fashion statement and so only know how to deconstruct, but whoever worked on the writing here appears to be an actual educated leftist or communist, or at least they give that impression.

It was somewhat forced, but what made it feel sad was the wording of the final scene and the sad song itself, which itself is present throughout the game as a leitmotif. They do this specifically to build up emotion for these specific moments. It's even more emotional if you know Japanese, as the lyrics are more or less from the perspective of Aigis trying to find strength to continue on without the protagonist. Really, the ending is quite effective, or would have been even more effective if Aigis were written as a more compelling character.

This game first came out when I was 7, and was pretty much my introduction into complex games. Before this I'd played only simple platformers and the like. I didn't have much of a conception of death at the time, so when Aeris died it actually made me cry like someone I cared about had passed away.

I played Crosscode a few years back, I know it has it flaws but I generally enjoyed Lea as a character despite being able to only speak a very few words.
Seeing her get abducted and trapped in some hellhole wasteland map with no escape along with others who also can't leave and clearly showing signs of mentally broken, lied about being in a coma to just find out you are actually some NPC by the original who shows up to not to save you but to beat the shit out of you and enraged at you for you are the reason she stuck in this mess with the big bad guy
And worse of all, you can't do anything about it, I for once in a long time actually felt sad for a video game character, just broke my heart man.

I refuse to play any of these VNs after Fate and Clannad. I got suckered in both times by people insisting the story is good, which it is, but they are tailor-made to make you feel like shit. Also I'm sick to death of so many Japanese media being obsessed with bittersweet sorrow. Sometimes the hero should win, the girl should smile, and everyone should live happily ever after forever, not for five minutes before she stops existing or gets hit by ebolavirus or some shit.

This was one of the few times where the dub changing the lines improved the story. I would have been extremely fucking blueballed if they had made her simply say "Thank you," instead of actually expressing her love as a final farewell. The scene would have lacked the same gravity the Japanese one had if they had done that

That game mostly just made me mad. The entire conceit of the game circles around people that are just incapable of behaving like rational adults. By the end I was just annoyed by the entire Dessendre family. I will say that Maelle's ending did affect me, though. When Verso stops bothering to even talk to Maelle and just continually tells her "I don't want this life, I don't want this life, I don't want this life," it felt very real. I was reminded of a similar time when my alcoholic mother got wildly drunk and stabbed herself. While I was shouting at her after taking the knife and calling 911 she just kept saying "I want to die, let me die," over and over again. That is actually how it sounds when someone gets to that state, they enter some kind of a fugue state.

You stupid faggots are killing Final Fantasy by letting them pull this shit. What are you, 15 years old? It was cringy, cliche, shounen crap that hurt to watch. Zack's death in the original game was dead silent. Cloud finds his body when he's too fucked up to even speak or move beyond dragging himself, grabs the sword, and the drugs fuck him up in the head. It's an immensely powerful scene without any dialogue from him after he's shot. Because he's dead. They shoot him point blank in the heart and he dies, right there, end of story.
BUT NO that's not good enough, is it? That doesn't get the point across to you children. We'll make the scene more powerful with a lot of cringe-worthy "you're my living legacy", "follow your dreams," "did I become a hero?" shit to hammer the point home because subtlety is for idiots. Nice retcons by the way; now that cloud isn't as fucked up the whole thing loses a lot of credibility, because you can't so easily imagine his mind getting warped when he seems lucid when Zack is talking at him. PS, how is Zack alive with a bunch of bullet holes in him for so long? The soldiers in VII finish the job until he's dead for sure. I guess these guys just respect drama too much for that. PS, it's hard for Cloud to impress himself onto his dead friend when his friend doesn't just die, but talks to him at length, and Cloud feels prolonged grief over the whole thing.
I'm rambling, and this is a bit long winded, but the point is, you retards need to understand the key difference between "showing" and "telling" in writing. If you thought that poorly written, blunt force trauma schlock was somehow better than the dead silent and abrupt death sequence in VII that pans up to Midgar in the distance, you're LITERALLY cancer, tasteless in the highest order, and I'd like you to stop poisoning my industry at just any time now.

NTA, but while Crisis Core could be a bit ham-fisted due to its anime underpinnings, the overall emotional impact of the ending was well done. I didn't find most of the ending to be incredibly powerful, but I did tear up at his final words, δΏΊγθ±ιγ«γͺγγγγͺ. The English line was translated correctly (do you think I became a hero?), but there's a small amount of subtlety that couldn't be carried, and the line delivery matched up just perfectly with the swell of the chorus to the ending song. I have a soft spot for unshakeable loyalty and steadfastness in fiction, even when the material's puerile.
Ultimately I do feel that Zack's scene while perfectly fine in the original deserved some fleshing out. His death was really discordant with a death befitting a SOLDIER First Class, and I don't necessarily mean the juxtaposition of him being unceremoniously shot to death but the ease with which it happened. I think they went the wrong direction by following the disastrous Advent Children model, but it carried itself well enough to be enjoyable.

I picked both endings, I just watched Verso's second. For the record I consider both to be bad endings, neither were necessary at all had they treated their abilities with the respect they deserved. They are divinity to at least this world of people, yet they will spend literal decades intent on behaving like petulant children.

A lot of people just think "John and Abigale dying sad" and gloss over this final sting of the ending showing that Jack essentially gained nothing from his revenge and that he failed John's (and also retroactively Arthur) hope that he'd have a normal life and not be a gunslinger who will likely die from the lifestyle as well and never really be happy.
>>720227428
Because she gave a brief sob story after you defended yourself and fatally wounded her. See, that makes her relatable or something, because she had a sad story and therefore we should ignore that she chose to be a piece of shit human being and feel instead that she had no agency and if it just wasn't for the world being unjust she would have been happy and productive.
MGS was one of the first series to be hit by the "villains with sympathetic/tragic back stories" bug, and it wasn't better for it if anyone took just one second to stop and go, "Yeah, but what if you didn't go out of your way to be a murderous piece of shit?"

Yeah, the whole thing is a tragic tale, but people always stay on John dying right before the game ends because it didnt sit well with their programming as gamers, and fail to see the full picture.
Also, Dead man's gun as a credits song really elevated the game's conclusion and made it genuinely sad.
>>720227761
I think Arthur's death was expected due to RDR1's ending(+they prepared you with Arthur progressively getting ill), hence why you were able to pay attention to the technicalities around it. That hero death thing should have been a one time trick only. Im thinking that it would have been more interesting(and just as shocking as the rdr1 ending) if John killed Arthur in the end for something plot related.

>she chose to be a piece of shit human being and feel instead that she had no agency and if it just wasn't for the world being unjust she would have been happy and productive
Human history is a chronicle of conflict, brutality, and suffering. The sheer scale of death in events like WWII, the Mongol conquests, or the trans-Atlantic slave trade is so immense it's hard to comprehend. When you look at this macro-level, it is easy to conclude that our nature is fundamentally violent and self-destructive. It paints a picture where peace is merely the brief interval between wars. From this perspective, MGS1 villains aren't just traumatized individuals, they're prophets of a grim reality. There's also the example of good person put in bad circumstances. This is the core of famous psychological experiments like the Stanford Prison Experiment and the Milgram experiment. They demonstrated that our moral compass is heavily influenced by authority, environment, and perceived pressure. Our virtues and morals aren't as solid as we'd like to believe. They are, to a large degree, circumstantial. If "goodness" is just a product of "good times," then is it truly a fundamental part of our nature? I sometimes doubt Kojima was the one who actually wrote MGS1 because his later games are subpar.

>Our virtues and morals aren't as solid as we'd like to believe
Generally true but I don't believe it's universal. I'm reminded of a series of studies where they basically tested people's ability to say the obvious truth in the face of overwhelming peer pressure. One test was giving people papers with lines of different sizes on them, and then asking which line was the longest or shortest, line A, B, C, or D. The answer was obvious, the lines were very different in size. However, the studies found that about 80% of people will choose the wrong answer repeatedly if everyone else chooses it, and the authority figure says that answer is correct.

Death in FF7 was a lot better but I have a weak spot for these kind of "final mission" moments.
Everything done after FF7 is shit honestly, it just manages to float because they all are based on the original with its cast and world.

Correct, but instead in the original the characters tank bullets like they are shooting paintballs. Even at Level 6 Cloud can suffer like 20 machine gun barrages before succumbing. Whether by inhuman endurance or incredible speed (likely both), SOLDIER has to have something that grants them the ability to fight people with guns and consistently win. Either way, a SOLDIER First Class shouldn't be done in by some random mooks when he just got done dispatching a few and should know more would likely be on the way.

While not as sorrowful compared to these iconic moments in gaming. This bit here in Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines kind of had me choked up. You come across this woman at Hollywood who knew your character before you became a vampire. She's elated and genuinely concerned for your wellbeing. But you can't let her know what became of you lest you face the consequences. I wish there was more to Samantha beyond this brief encounter.

For every Plastic Memories, Clannads, etc there's a dozen moeblobs that give you instant gratification with no sad feelings. But it's the bittersweetness that makes it stuck with you. Ps3 could have perfectly had a happy ending but it would have missed the entire point of the game. That death comes to us all, that we must accept that whether we like it or not and that if our death affects everyone around us so did our life. Sad for your death, but happy we got to share your life while you still had it. That's the kind of appreciation that only comes with age. For a teenager, it hits too hard.

The problem is when the deaths are contrived or hamfisted rather than being a necessary part of the story. There is a difference between being grateful for having shared time with the one you love and constructing a story such that a bittersweet ending is the outcome regardless what transpires. I'm not saying that games should have instant gratification, I'm merely saying too many of these gravitate towards sorrow for the sake of sorrow. I'm quite familiar with death in real life, why would I want to experience those emotions more often in a fantasy where we have control and can create a happier ending, and potentially a more satisfying one?

Really the one that hit me the most was the interlude with the main characters grandfather. He's shown a world where there was never an attack on the palace, his son and daughter in law never died and his grandson was never forced to live away from his family.
There's something to be said about how there is a lot of tragedy in this game surrounding families.

> Max couldn't start over with Mona Sax
It was annoying that he couldn't start over.
It got more annoying when it took for him to go
to Brazil, of all places, to pick up the pieces.
The thing was, to me it was about staying still
somewhat at the top - NYPD career, getting the girl and the esteem of being a legendary investigative policeman, family life, real estate property holdings instead of being a comfortable washed up drunk (again, referring to Max Payne 3).
And sure Mona Sax was mostly oozing sex and danger (family life? her? she seems the type to rather adopt or surrogate instead of getting pregnant) - a permanent sexual fantasy as a trophy wife of sorts. But then again, it could have played, because Sam Lake loves his American soap opera actors, like "Days of Our Lives" or "General Hospital": hot people having attractive families and children. A hilarious, and flattering, European stereotype about American life if I do say so myself as an Ameri-faggot.

In 2 it is written well. When he tells kaoru that he's pretty much responsible for the massacre he stands there all sad waiting for her to shoot him like he's Jesus dying for our sins or something and she just tells him to cut the shit and that killing him now won't make her feel any better before storming out, their whole relationship was just written surprisingly well for a series that has almost zero women of importance in it

I really loved the second act in XI, everywhere you go something sad has happened and you can't fix it entirely but you still get to bring some relief and hope and put things on the mend, it worked especially well because it's all places you've already visited and people you already talked to if you're thorough like me about getting every bit of script from the NPCs. I've rarely felt this motivated about doing properly the job of a hero in a JRPG.

Neil has stated in multiple interviews that his intention with The Last of Us was to make Americans understand the Israeli-Palestine conflict. He says the event that triggered the whole thing was seeing news footage of Hamas or some other Palestinian group executing captured Israelis soldiers on TV and his first gut reaction was this "Fuck these sand niggers, kill em all"

I made some bad decisions in ME1 and ME2 as far as war readiness goes in ME3 so I was trying my hardest to get whatever support I could. So naturally I went with the Salarian plan to sabotage genophage cure to get Salarian support. It seemed logical, too. Mordin found out and I was like shit man I gotta do this so I picked the option to threaten Mordin and shoot him. Despite being weighed down by his massive fucking balls, Mordin just turned around and ignored Shepard and I hesitated to press the Renegade prompt so Shepard ultimately let Mordin go and cure genophage. And when you do it this way Shepard angrily throws the gun away just like when he shoots him, there's no nod like when you side with Mordin from the start. It really made me feel the conflict Shepard was going through. ME3 has problems that go beyond just the ending but that scene was great.

Rance X credits.
The franchise felt immortal, like there was always another wacky adventure waiting around the corner so the ending sequence hit really hard. Stories often end with either a tragic death or some resolution of an overarching plot point with characters finally being free to live in peace. The first option gives immediate closure and the latter is the opposite and we're not concerned about the end because in our minds the characters are forever alive and well and enjoying the peace they've earned. In either case you remember the characters either at their happiest or strongest. Even if they died, in a way they are crystallized in the form immediately preceding their death. However we rarely see the happily ever after depicted as just the adventures continuing but eventually coming to an end. There's a certain sense of finality when the game says it has told all it had to tell and it's time to say goodbye.

I don't know why it made me feel so sad, and when I looked at the save file later it felt just as bad.
Honestly the reason I don't like the Downpour DLC, the whole thing really just tries to explain everything and it just ruins it.

zack can tank thousands of bullets, not 10 million, however. ff7 og had a bunch of limitations it had to work around, and some retcons to make characters stronger makes sense. i mean, sephiroth doing all that cool shit and then falling off a cliff and dying is kind of lame.

Strangely enough MGRising has a lot of that DNA and Kojumbo tried to distance himself from it when the gme was hated initially and saying he wrote 0% of it and then came back trying to take all credit when people realized it was a great title in itself, just not in the metal gear sense.

Zack's death in the og game was really lame and made no sense, as this anon pointed out
>>720235290 When I played FF7 for the first time, I didn't even know that this scene was in the fucking game because geniuses at Square decided to make it an optional side scene. I watched it on youtube and felt literally nothing besides confusion. I don't know why I should give a fuck about some random side character (even calling Zack a "character" in the og game is extremely generous. "weird and random plot device" is a much better way to describe him) that had 2 minutes of screentime. Meanwhile, in Crisis Core Zack is an actual fun character with a backstory, development, character arc, emotional moments, and a death scene that actually makes sense and serves as an incredibly emotional way of ending his story

On the other hand I feel sad for the dumbest shit like picrel, in a single moment understanding Asio was a piece of shit to Otus just because he wanted him to be a better person than he was did me in in a way that few other moments did.

same, either they find a mystery cure with the technomancer nomads, or you live out the last few months of your life surrounded by people who genuinely care for and love you
To me no other ending makes sense, even the Sun ending has this undercurrent of ego to it, where it feels like V is doing the Crystal Palace job for their own legacy rather than because they thought it would work and save their life, and I think your love interest leaving you in that ending is the giveaway for that; they see that you care more about yourself and how people see you than anything else

what's funny is that I went on a binge of watching reactions to the FFX ending a few weeks ago, including japanese streamers, and there are a surprising amount of japanese comments that say that even they think the english version's "I love you" was better, and that the "Thank You" is more down to japanese culture stigmatising outward displays of romantic affection rather than having some 'deep meaning' like weebs like to attribute to it
