It's outright terrible from a narrative point of view but it's also really fucking funny if you don't take it too seriously. It basically takes a fat shit on the original story and characters to further connect Higurashi to the overall WTCverse (while also somehow pissing on previously established connections) and push a strange proto-LambdaBern under the guise of SatoRika (which is technically the same thing anyway). The plot direction is piss and more than half of the second part (Sotsu) is spent pointlessly reiterating the previous part (Gou, which itself was also mostly spent pointlessly reiterating the original question arcs for the remake meme). However, the animation and music is pretty great. The openings and endings are great and look gorgeous. The girls and K1 are also peak sex as usual, further enhanced by Watanabe's artstyle, which I think was a pretty good fit. There's good eyecandy if you're that kinda guy (but not as much fanservice as the original).
I can't call it good, but I can't say it doesn't have value. It's got substantial merit as probably the funniest "sequel" anime I've ever seen. It also brought us the wonder that is teenage Satoko. And it got Kiliu to make another doujin, so I can't hate it.
The best time to have watched it, like with all trainwreck anime/manga, was with /a/ back when it aired. I'd still say it's worth watching though if you've 39 anime episodes worth of time to spare.

The story has lofty high points (most of which appear in the first three episodes) and ridiculously weak low points (most of which appear in the last two episodes). The grand mystery is a bit of a letdown and works only on a moment to moment basis. On the other hand, R07 excels at character-driven drama and does a good job creating unnerving atmosphere in the Question Arcs. Overall I think it's worth it despite its unevenness and disappointing ending - I enjoyed it and I'm not even that invested in Japanese media in general. It's very long but you're already here so it's not like you have anything better to do with your time.

Higurashi is an amazing and thought-provoking work of art. I think Umineko is better but I love both novels dearly.
It is not perfect and the biggest flaw is absolutely the pacing. Keep this in mind, if you can work through it, good, if not, oh well, you should move on to other novels or games that you actually enjoy.
I recommend you read in Japanese.
Even if you play in English, use the original sprites and backgrounds as designed by the author. Do not use mods which introduce new fanfic graphics that destroy the mood of the original work.

I was gonna say, that and Rena staring down K1 with a hatchet feels like it breaks the rules of HS quite a bit so I had a hard time retroactively figuring out what I was supposed to work out was actually happening.

I'm still annoyed at the tip that shows the Yamainu covering for the fake phone number. Rena is HS'd out the wazoo at that point and is an unreliable narrator while the tip is using a standard narrator to portray the events of the Yamainu explaining why the phone number is out of service, which is really unfair to the reader imo. I finally thought there was some credence to the idea that there are shady actors up to no good, and the game seemed to be telling me that I shouldn't believe that because the unreliable narrator thinks it while the omniscient one is showing me an event that disproves it.

Yeah I'm also only passingly familiar with the translation quirks with coach/teacher/director which probably muddies the water a lot. As for Irie and Yamainu being called there, I think only K1 sees them, and I took that on my first reading as Mion actually putting in a house call out of genuine concern (which turned out to be neither what K1 thought was happening nor what was actually happening). It's tricky to do unreliable narrators right but in a mystery especially it made me feel like I just couldn't solve anything because so much can just be waved away as your narrator having schizo AIDS.

In theory if R07 had the "rules" figured out from the outset I think it would have worked well but as it is it feels pretty unfair. Still a better mystery than Umineko though.

For the most part I think Onikakushi does it well. Knowing that Mion/Rena were really just in over their heads at their friend going down Satoshi's path from the year before recontextualizes a lot of their actions. I think Rena following him with a hatchet ties into what Mion and Rena were really feeling during Oni. Rena is basically autistic at the best of times so even her well-intentioned actions can make her seem like a schizo.
I actually DO think part of that scene was a hallucination. At some point Keiichi is running away with all his energy but Rena is always somehow walking behind him. But initially she really did follow him home out of worry. At least thats how I see it.

First of all, Rena was actually carrying the axe.
She was using it to clear out trash from the dump.
The reason Kei freaks out is because she remembers what he says about the dump excursion previously and feels guilty for her outburst too. She's trying to reconcile by laughing and goofing around.
If Kei wasn't L4 then he would be calling her a weirdo and laughing too, but he's running away because he thinks she's brought the axe for HIM, which is technically actually true (lol), just not in the way he thinks.
Rena interprets this as a sign that he's still hurt so she tries to use her language of love, which is being persistently and cheerful... bad combo for L4 Kei.

It's clear that he was making things up on the go and has written himself into a corner on more than one occasion. Keiichi is still important as the protagonist of course but the girls are the ones making things happen. Out of all the stories I would say only Tatarigoroshi is primarily focused on Keiichi and male experiences.

I definitely wouldn't say Keiichi has it worse than her. Her parents got divorced and she had HS-fueled mental breakdowns, then she went on a violent rampage at school with a bat only to be essentially sedated until she stopped flipping out(but her schizo tendencies are still lingering).

You need to seperate HS from character scenarios because it varies from fragment to fragment. Just pretend that HS doesn't exist for a minute, then we can look at everything without a bias:
Rena had a breakdown following a traumatic divorce. She is mostly stable now. Apart from going apeshit at her old school, nothing that happens to her is a result of her own action or inaction.
Kei was shooting kids with a BB gun of his own volition, although he does feel some shame for his actions and turns himself in after he almost blinds someone.

The sonozakis are a whole different can of worms, I don't think her parents are that bad but they don't seem too active in their kids' lives and largely go along with Sonozaki traditions. I can only think of one or two scenes where the twins' dad is present, and Akane doesn't show up a huge amount either, although she has a few decent scenes with Mion and Shion.
