The "Midgar Zolom" was an optional boss enemy, blocking your path, that you (the video gaming player) COULD NOT BEAT. He always rushed you, blocked you, and killed you. You lost. Over and over, looking for a way to cross the swamp... but the Zolom charged you and killed you. Didn't matter if you ran straight through the swamp, walked as slow as possible, crawled along the mountain range around it; the Zolom was about the biggest enemy you had EVER faced in the game so far and he ZOOMED in and KILLED you. The Midgar Zolom was intense. And then, you finally got to the other side, just next to the cave entrance.

And the Zolom you fled was BUTCHERED, stabbed on top of a tree. Like it was tossed there as easy as a handkerchief. OHKO.

That is a complete character arc. Remake Cid is a blank slate in comparison.

The point is that most people get killed by that same gigantic monster in a very tough fight, and the game basically forces you to get on a Chocobo and run past the enemy... then you find that Sephiroth just fuckin impaled it and butchered it on his own.

The dragon Sephiroth deals 3000+ damage to per hit is another example of the game demonstrating his power in a way that directly stems from your own gameplay experience. He's like a superboss just lurking around and waiting to appear next, and nothing seems capable of stopping him.
