For some reason city games always make roundabouts look like junctions... perhaps because they only have the technology to create junctions and refuse to implement proper lane merging mechanics.

Arrows shouldn't tell you "Turn right" when you're driving forwards to your exit. You shouldn't have to turn to get off the roundabout - you turn to stay on it!

I was always disappointed by how rigid Cities Skylines road builder was. You couldn't make IRL junction merges because the game wanted everything to be 90 degrees and would only be haggled down to 45 degrees.

Or in other words, if you ever played Factorio or another game with actual train mechanics... have you ever used "path" signals? Have you ever found that trains get bottlenecked at roundabouts? I wanted to love Cities Skylines but it has the inherent problem that it's a city building game for the first 30 minutes and the entire rest of the playthrough is managing traffic.
Every problem in the city can be fixed by plopping down a building. But those buildings also put extra cars on the street, and they need to reach the problem areas and return for the problem to be actually fixed. It's a compounding issue, which is accurate but not very fun.

I want more city building and less installing mods that give me fine control of every lane and stop sign because that's 95% of the gameplay.

A crossroad breaks traffic flow really hard, which in turn means traffic jams further down the road as cars pile up more easily on the road.
Roundabouts aren't immune to it, but they allow traffic to flow more clearly, which limit car piling up in the first place.

IMO it's the most beautiful area in the entire city, although I have a soft spot for the old colonial neighborhoods too. 1940's-1990's are mostly featureless brick squares. Post 1990's are when the Mexican built plywood nightmares start coming into play. My family has lived in this city for about 200 years. I can go and look at most of the houses they lived in. For what it's worth, I wish you did too. A point a lot of the US/Europe rhetoric in this thread is missing is that these mass transit systems that rely less on individual cars are extremely vulnerable to economic and government disruption. Should the government not tax its citizens enough, should there not be enough citizens to tax, should there be some shortage of materials or knowledgeable laborers, all of it would come done near instantaneously. It forces people to become dependent on their government, and should the government fall or become irrevocably corrupt, the citizens are forced to defend themselves. Except they gave up those right decades or centuries ago.

America sure as shit has its own problems (mostly at the east and west coast states), but that is why an American gets so frustrated with these kinds of systems and perspectives. Hope this helps.

Two major reasons: The US is far FAR larger than European countries. Each state is basically a Euro country. Driving 20 miles is a daily thing a lot of people do. You cannot walk that distance on a daily basis for work and taking public transport takes too long. You can say it's because our public transport sucks and you'd be right.
