I peaked at 70 subs with around 30k total views, my vids were I guess nailing the algo at the time but not converting subs.
I completely lost interest after they changed it and stopped posting entirely. You also on top of the 1k subs have to have a certain amount of hours watched in a certain time period on all your vids iirc

The most success I ever had on YT was a shitty Minecraft griefing channel where I just uploaded 10-15 minute montages of me shitting up some kid's server with 2016 trap music in the background. I have been planning to do a Youtube channel for years now. I put it on the backburner, because of my education, but now I am unemployed and have the time to do it.

I used to make YouTube videos but they were really just made to make my irl friends laugh. I did it for a few years but it never took off so I stopped. It's not as extreme on Twitch as it is on YouTube but you'd have to be streaming at all times to build up your audience unlike on YouTube where you can upload one heavy hitter and your career starts from there. I've created two videos for spawn, one for snes and one for ps1. I'm really passionate about making videos, I do heavy researching, try to include everything about the game and have lots of fun with editing. Already started it a bit more than a year ago, just a vod dumping channel with some shorts sprinkled in. All my best performing vods are of dome keeper so I've been playing it about once every two weeks while trying to look for some other games that my viewers will watch but so far the only game that got even close to the same amount of watch time was Caves of Qud which is a lot more commitment per run. My numbers on both twitch and youtube are garbage but I enjoy the novelty of there being a few people who want to listen to my autistic ramblings.

My guess is by that point channels like LongplayArchive, which I actually worked on as a side hustle back in 2017, were blowing up and picking up steam so those companies decided to only go for the real whales rather than channels like mine which were still on the lower end.

No commentary longplays will always have an audience the issue is people don't see much of a reason to "invest" into you if your personality isn't on full display. So doing stuff like Patreon which lots of channels want to do is much harder to get away with.

When reading about my experience I want people to keep in mind that early to mid YouTube was MUCH different than it is now. Audience's tastes have changed also.

I started out on YouTube 14 years ago (2011)
Got relatively good views, made it to 10K subs by 2012 and was making around $300 a month in revenue.
As time went on I wasn't really happy with what I was doing though, following the trends, making content I wasn't enthusiastic about, so I abandoned the channel in 2014, made a new one and didn't monetize it.
It's been almost 11 years now and I have only around 350 subs, and I don't make videos as much as I used to (Effectively stepped into a partial retirement from content creation last year.)
I enjoy occasionally making a video, but with YouTube having been a hobby and not a career for the last 10 years, my actual life and responsibilities conflicted with it.

I have seen YouTube change so many times over the years, I think perhaps I was ahead of the curb in realizing back in 2014 that doing YouTube as a long term career was just never going to be viable.
Yes there have been success stories, but for every solid content creator out there, there's 10,000 channels of pure slop being pushed and viewed by to and by far wider audiences.
And even many of YouTube's top creators have dialed back/stepped down in the last few years, making less videos or just outright leaving because they have accrued enough wealth to pursue other things.
It's safe to say the gravy train left the station for the most part for YouTube a very long time ago, and to start now is to go up against almost insurmountable odds.
Still, I would wish lucky to anyone with genuine passion and creativity to do what they love, though I would never recommend doing it for money.

I've tried streaming a while back. It was like a vanity circlejerk stream but I managed to drag myself to affiliate on twitch (not that it's hard and I'm pretty sure they just sell those now). It was mostly other fags from discord server that watched each other so it was like 3-5 people. I managed to get like 30 viewers once when I actually played a game that get an update recently.
It's pretty hard to fill the airtime with something meaningful, especially if you don't have much chat activity to bounce off and even if you do it's easy to get tunnel visioned and realize you haven't said anything in 15 minutes.

I stream on twitch at least once a week. I have only two real audience members, both of them joined my discord and we play games together occasionally and have become friends, which is probably more than most streamers have. If you look at twitch the number of people streaming with zero audience is pretty fucking insane. I’ve also made friends with other small time streamers who’ll drop by my stream occasionally or collab with me, but I don’t really consider them an actual audience. In a way streaming can feel lonely as fuck when you have a slow night and your regulars can’t make. It’s also lead to me playing games with 4-5 other people which is pretty fun.

I have quite a few regulars that comment on my videos. How close you want to get them is really up to you. Personally, I try to keep my YouTube account and profile separate from my personal ones. That way, I don't feel like I am letting viewers get too close to me when I chat with them or accept their friend requests.
I find it's nice to chat with them about things. I don't think you really need to "be their friend". Just being a casual acquaintance is fine. As I said, let them as close as you feel comfortable with. If they turn out to be a horrible person you don't want to interact with, it's not hard to cut them off if you keep your connections loose.

A general tip for editing most people dont realize, is you can speed up the footage with L or J to slow down. You dont have to edit in real time constantly.
I usually just edit when im waiting for things to craft in games or listening to a podcast or something and do all the unimportant non-verbal action sections or whatever.

I'm just a small vtuber that uploads his twitch vods to a channel. I draw custom thumbnails when I can, and I stick to a format thats kind reminiscent of episodic lets plays and longplays. I just don't get a ton of views or subs.

Don't really know how to "market" or shill myself without being obnoxious, and I'm not social with my peers. Viewers and friends tell me I have a good voice, good tastes in games, and admire my talent and effort I put into streams, but I get discourage a lot by the numbers.

Partly my fault for not wanting to be the kind of streamer that adds another Mario Sunshine or Ocarina of Time playthrough ontop of the evergrowing garbage heap, but someone that plays stuff like Illbleed, Chulip, Planet Laika, and other weirder picks.
