I do miss those times, too. Games were made by and tailored for people who actually played videogames. Nowadays every non-indie game company has to deal with a bunch of shitty stuff like identity politics and stuff that should have nothing to do with video games. Plus a bunch of bigwigs and shareholders who don't really give a fuck demand the developers to do whatever it is they believe will maximize their profits.

The 'cool' kids in middle school were hooked on Diablo and Starcraft.
Before that it was Mario and Sonic and such.
Everyone played GoldenEye.
Pokemon g1 was fucking everywhere.
Highschool jocks had HALO LAN parties.
Even black Americans have been playing fighting and sports games for fucking ever.

They nearly always made gaming look cool (arcades in movies). Also there were always chill games (that aren't women games only). Story of Seasons, Kyodai Mahjongg. Match Three games were huge in late 90s and early 2000s.
Global media only became shit when companies started making stuff for everyone at once that doesn't appeal to anyone. Same applies to movies and music. Also diversity hiring and forced checks. This is why successor games and music have a golden age now. A lot of people want to ""go back"".

It was acceptable to play these things sure, but most were supposed to treat it as a novelty that they experimented with and then moved on from. Making it your main hobby and passtime was what was frowned upon. This is why you heard a lot of parents spout the bullshit claim in the 90s and 2000s that you’d “grow out of it”, because that’s how it worked for them when they casually played Pong and Space Invaders back in the 70s and 80s.

It’s a bit different now because playing vidya as your main hobby is now considered to be on the same level as watching TV all day.
