You have to remember, the majority of this fanbase have only played Awakening, Fates, Three Houses and maybe Engage.

That was literally what they were attempting to do with Awakening, and they weren't subtle about it. A bid for the glory days of FE. They had already, back to back, remade the two games from the first continuity in the series - which then bombed and failed to reach an international market.
Awakening was CLEARLY memberberries: the game, but with a modernized twist, to bring in new fans and court old fans' nostalgia at the same time. Titty-Tiki and R63 Marth are the shallowest of memberberries meta-references, you can't get more shallow. Awakening is proto-Engage and it looks like FW is once again taking lessons from it.

Fair. But there are a number of Engage supports that do start off with interesting details or expand more on the worldbuilding. Fogado-Celine paints an interesting picture of the tension between Firene and Solm, Merrin-Amber of all fucking supports dives into some Brodia worldbuilding because she's curious about their knights' training regimen, the DLC supports all have really interesting insight on the Hounds and their backstories. Something I find about Engage supports is that they all reveal different bits of information about the character to make one overarching picture. Kind of like putting together a puzzle, which definitely isn't a method for everyone, but I liked how the characters only revealed certain things about themselves depending on who they were interacting with. Alfred only reveals his illness to his sister, Yunaka has to explain her backstory because Citrinne threatens her, stuff like that. Definitely makes it hard to learn about these characters easily, though.

You're starting off with the insistence that Engage characters can't be poorly written and reject any explanation based on the truth that they are. Nobody will care a SoL support between two characters that aren't already given depth elsewhere. It's why Engage's characters are so unpopular, it's why so many players just stop reading the supports they unlock. They don't care about the characters.

If you want to do tropey slice of life stuff you also have to lay the groundwork elsewhere that makes the characters involved feel like actual characters the player can care about.

Engage wants the SoL wacky stuff without wanting to have to do the legwork that would first make the player care about the characters. It's lazy, sloppy support writing.

When did I say that? I don't particularly like more than a couple characters in Engage. Many of them are pretty poorly written.

It's not because they have depth it's because you're forced to use them for dozens of hours and everything else in the game is so boring that some SoL sounds like a nice respite from fishing and chores.

It's there, it's just the ratio is out of balance. It leans way too heavily on the "silly slop" side and neglects the "this is what makes you actually care about the character and take them seriously" side.
There just isn't enough of the latter, so you can completely miss it. It's unbalanced. It's especially bad early game where the first few chapters of supports you get will just be the "silly slop" ones.
You need a mix of "silly slop" and "serious" to be a fun cast, but Engage neglects the "serious" and goes full "silly slop." If you went full "serious" the cast would also be boring. 3H does a better job of having serious supports and silly slop supports balance out. Where it fails (ie Raphael) you get unpopular characters.

I just think it's blatantly false when people claim it has no world building at all, because there is information there, relevant to the story or not (trust me, I wish it WAS connected more to the story - it's why I prefer how the manga integrates some of it into the plot). Engage's world definitely has more going for it than something like Sacred. What do we even know about Renais? About Frelia other than it has fliers and has good seafood? Rausten and Jehanna at least have some basis, but not much else.
