But you really could be wording this better because I agree with you on the principle of "likeable/interesting characters really make or break every case in this series", but you need to either be more blunt about the issues or stop trying to go with the angle of "flawed characters are badly written characters".
I'll give you an out here as an example, I don't think any of the characters in 2-3 are badly written, they're just a bunch of unlikeable cunts and they really drag down that case for me.
Now repeat after me, "I don't like 3-5 because Godot and Misty are dumb and I don't enjoy that they are dumb".
I'll even add another bonus for you, I honestly think Misty is a very poorly written character, for one thing she barely exists even tho she's extremely important, then you have these very contradictory actions of "I care about my children, but i gotta abandon them after one mistake" and as you mentioned before "I care about my niece, but I'll risk my daughter's life to save her".
with that said I still hold 3-5 as a highlight of the series for how it overall wraps up the original trilogy's start and it's finish, not to mention the character development of Phoenix and Maya by the end is a shining example of how far both of them have come a long and it can make me overlook the more retarded aspects of 3-5, like Misty, hope you had fun with that ramble because it was fun to type it up.

Originals on the DS if you can; it's "a matter of taste", but I really think that the art direction and color pallete of the Steam version sucks ass when compared to that of the OG. Plus, it is one of the few DS games that makes really good use of the dual-screen feature, as it just feels natural and intuitive (in my head, the upper screen represented Phoenix paying attention to the court, and the lower screen was him looking at/under the desk, just a mess of evidence, notes, and updated autopsy reports).

I had a different paragraph typed up but I think the only other thing I have to contribute to this, is that i could find an issue with the majority of cases in the series very easily, hell I could post them if 4chan's word limit wasn't 2000, but there's only a select few cases that I would say are just not a fun time to read, like yeah 3-5 has issues, but i'd rather reread that than 6-DLC as you mentioned, because I find that one to just be really okay and safe, and that doesn't make for an entertaining experience even if on paper, there's nothing dramatically wrong with it.

I'd still say that's pretty unfair and goes against the nature of fair play of mysteries in general, especially since the player has been setup to that point to trust evidence, but fair enough, I'll admit it technically doesn't break the rules. The "good" rules Van Dine makes are just common sense for writing an engaging story centered around mystery. I have read Umineko and I think it's mediocre, but my issues with it have nothing with it breaking Van Dine rules, it's more due to the fact it's just badly paced and stumbles over its own themes. AA doesn't break any of the rules you mentioned. The detective refers to the player character doing the investigation, not a literal detective. Danganronpa breaks that rule, but AA doesn't. Spirit channeling is an established part of the setting and isn't used to magic solutions out of nowhere, which is what the rule warns against. The main crime in every case is always treated as a murder, even if accidents/suicides are related to it (there's a reason you always find a culprit). The closest rule AA comes to breaking is the anti-politics one in SoJ, but even then it's only a side-plot secondary to the character drama.

Considering how poorly you understand the rules I don't see you as qualified in critiquing them. They are all good. Like all rules there are occasions where you can break them (some famous mysteries did), but it has to be done for a good reason. Unless you really know what you are doing (which most writers do not), you should absolutely follow them.
