Gold is the toughest and heaviest metal in the universe that can punch trough solid steel with ease.
The only reason why gold wasn't used for weapons and armor is that it was too rare, expensive and heavy. If gold was as common as iron, every heavy duty tool or weapon owould have been made from it.

emerald ore is one of the rarest blocks in the game, so rare that it's more valuable as an unmined/silk touched ore than the resource you mine from it
gold is apparently only valuable to pigs in hell
every other ore has other uses that make them too valuable to trade away

What are you talking about? Gold is one of the strongest sets you can get at the start of the game, and depending on the difficulty you can use it all the way up to Skeletron. And even then, it's still used in a lot of other crafting recipes and potions even after you make better weapons/armor. You'd have to be playing some kind of autism simulator and not an actual game for gold to be useless.

It's a funny simple joke, that unironically makes people think.
It's shit because it's realistic, it would be a terrible material for weapons and armor.
it's a joke, because why let you craft it at all? You're gonna have superior iron before it anyway, it's there so you can craft it and look a bit dumb for falling for the jest, and in turn maybe learn a thing about material sciences in turn.
It's given somewhat of a place due to the nether and enchantments(but not really), but really it didn't need to have a place, it could've remained entirely a joke and for aesthetics, but that's too complicated for modern game devs.

You could revamp iron processing in general (so it isn't just smelting the ores mined with stone pickaxe in a 8 cobblestone furnace) but it would be far too different from the vanilla feel.
>>723536284
This is the thing I hate about Minecraft progression second only to its structure: its scalability. There's this massive gulf between
>amount of materials the average player needs to actually progress
and
>amount of materials needed to build chunk-spanning mega-farms that produce 1,000,000 tons of beeswax and cum to lubricate your next chunk-spanning mega-farm that produces gold so you never have to mine again
You're trapped between these two extremes. If you neglect farming stuff, it's not uncommon to realize you need this or that ingredient that's only in one biome (which takes hours to locate). If you decide to bite the farming bullet, you end up needing absurd amounts of raw materials to build megastructures that are without fail aesthetically unpleasing because they're cobbled together from ice, rubber bands, honey, and pig shit.
Minecraft is just a giant leaning tower of poor design decisions that coasts by on how good its basic premise is. I'm revisiting vanilla for the first time in years (after mostly playing modded servers with friends for the past few years) and it's wild just how asinine every new addition they've added in that time is, and how each one does absolutely nothing to rectify the issues with progression.

unironically yes, as an unfathomably large part of Minecraft is creativity and having more blocks lets you express your creativity in different ways. Though I'd rather they go back to some of the roots and let you place sideways "stairs", let water be put in the gaps in stairs, add half grass blocks, let chains bisect with each other laterally (in a + sign), etc. things like chains, candles and flower pots were amazing changes. it does nothing for utilitarian gameplay but these items look phenomenal.
also, the firefly bush added an unlimited amount of fucking SOVL to the game. absolutely love it.

Most people do not get full iron in 20 minutes or full diamond in 1 hour. Minecraft's progression isn't actually busted or unappealing. Even wood, which you can very easily argue as the worst tool, has value for new players as a tutorial and starting point. A lot of people try to view the game as a series of numbers and logic puzzles, which I think misses the original appeal of the game. Although I will say that copper does feel redundant in how it was slapped into the game years later. Redstone, lapis, and emeralds were not completely perfect on launch either, but those are a lot, lot better because they are not tied to tools and they show that ore has other uses. Also because they're rarer.

fun fact: Bronze was in many ways superior to wrenched Iron IRL and would have been the preferred material to make tools, weapons and armor out of deep into the iron-age, because it was easier to work with (could be casted), didn't corrode and oxidize as easily and was about equal, if not a little better, in toughness.. The only reason Iron took over is because tin was required to make Bronze, and tin was much rarer and more expensive than copper or iron, while iron was even more abundant than copper.

In fantasy games gold and silver should be the magically conductive materials, being able to have much more powerful enchantments than things made from more conventional heavy-duty material. There could then be steel swords with gold coating for example, to have the magical power of gold and the toughness of steel in one weapon. Of course the gold coating would wear of pretty fast and have to be reapplied ever so often, making it very expensive to maintain such a weapon. Gems, like diamonds, would be able to carry even more magical power, and be slotted into gear.
In the endgame, through very complicated and obtuse alchemical processes requiring rare materials and esotheric rituals, you would be able to make fantasy-metals like mithril or adamant, which are stronger then steel, while also more magically powerful than gold. Mithril would be just as strong as steel and gold, but very light-weight like cloth, whereas adamant would be the most powerful in all aspects but even heavier than steel, making it impractiable as an armor, unless the wearer makes himself stronger than a human through magic/is already stronger than a human by nature.

Minecraft is really fascinating played entirely played.
Been jumping around in a truly blind lets play series, he's figuring shit out based on what is in the game, and the achievements.
There's another one I wanna watch later that did the same thing in an earlier version.
So many things I take for granted, like I played minecraft first in 2010, and when I was trying to make a pickaxe I asked how, and then I said my crafting window was too small, and I was told how to make a crafting table. Later I instinctively just google and used the wiki, so seeing someone with really no help other than in game stuff is so cool and it looks like a genuine adventure, and figuring out alchemy and redstone looks like real wizard type shit.

What are the big updates that changed minecraft in some fundamental way?
Is there a dividing update before 1.7.3?
>Beta 1.7.3
Last Before Hunger
>Beta 1.8, Adventure Update
Hunger
>1.5.2, Redstone Update
Last Before Horse
>1.6.1, Horse Update
Horse
>1.8.9, Bountiful Update
Last Before Elytra
>1.9, Combat Update
Elytra
I think those are the major updates.
There's like a thing in the Aquatic Update that I think is a big change, but in the context of a post elytra game it doesn't really matter much.
Simply modding out Elytra, Horse is a lot easier than playing modern minecraft and just modding out Hunger, you'd have to also change food and stacks to get close to 1.7.3 feel.

This is only an """"issue"""" if you're playing singleplayer, where you can get a full set of Iron armor within 10 minutes and enough Diamonds for at least 1 armor piece and a pickaxe within 30.
Copper equipment are a lot more meaningful if you're in a private multiplayer server and you have up to 10 different assholes draining all of the resources in the worldborder. Yes, I joined the server 30 minutes later than the others. No, I'm not getting any Iron because those assholes instantly started hoarding it.

How populates does a server need to be for this to matter now? You can just walk in a straight line far away, set your spawn point with a bed, and there should be plenty of untouched resources, right? But tbf I always enjoyed "living" near other players in a player-built town or shared base, otherwise you're just playing singleplayer online like modern MMOs.

We try to keep the world border relatively small so that people actually interact with oneanother instead of effectively doing singleplayer. It makes you appreciate Copper tools a hell of a lot more under those circumstances.

i wouldn't. i think having it based on "ages" of materials is more than enough.

i think minecraft's problem is that it almost completely lacks any sort of linearity with the progression. you could get iron within a few minutes of playing dig straight down and immediately get diamonds. i like how other games did it, like terraria, where the deeper you go or the farther you get from spawn, the higher the risk and reward for items is. obviously in terraria you can dig down for better materials but there are WAY more hazards to prevent you from just b-lining to the best materials, especially on higher difficulties like expert or master. minecraft is a sandbox first and an adventure rpg last. it's not nuanced enough that just changing one aspect is going to fix it.

I actually think this is why minecraft is more fun. But I've played since the beta and tend to view it as a sandbox game with adventure elements tacked on later rather than an actual survival game. I enjoy being able to speedrun a diamond pick and get whatever materials I want. There's still tons to do in the game after that, like build a house, a farm, catch animals, explore the nether, set up a rail and portal network, etc. Having diamond just feels like early game to me.

Minecraft could have never received an update from beta and it would probably still be one of the best-selling games of all time because
1. Nearly everyone plays the game for the sandbox block-building experience, at least initially, especially children.
2. The game has always been moddable and had tons of mods that add whatever enemies, progression, block types you could want.
They don't have tons of different mobs because the game doesn't need it to be a successful product, and keeping the base game light leaves lots of room for mods to expand the game into very different fresh experiences.

the problem with that is that Bedrock edition isn't capable of modding, which you could belittle but that's a separate conversation entirely. you can also argue that what's in the game currently easily justifies the $40 price tag and that they could just leave it as-is as free updates aren't expected from a business model perspective. but if they bar mods from Bedrock edition maybe they should update the game to include more stuff.
the fundamental issue is that Minecraft is all about passion and when Notch owned it, it was objectively a passion project. being owned by a big corpo like Microsoft is the antithesis for what Minecraft is supposed to be all about. that's why some dude in his basement can make a mod that basically changes the game entirely by adding all kinds of crazy new items and gameplay loops, and more importantly he can do it for FREE. nu-Mojang with all of their employees and basically infinite money crank out a patch that adds like 3 new mobs and some otherwise minor shit like once a year, if that.
the passion is throttled on purpose because...don't want to overfeed the fishes, I guess? i wouldn't ever understand how corporations like that work. maybe there's so much red tape and design-by-committee to pass that obstructs them from releasing content at a faster interval but maybe that's being too generous.

They should have made it so all tools have a debuff in the nether except for gold, forcing you to enchant gold tools to make them last longer.

that's actually a good point and reminded me of one main differences i had forgotten about between minecraft and other games, which was durability. if you want to start doing any large projects you pretty much NEED diamond or else you're going to be getting into the loop of needing more tools and materials for those tools. so having diamond early gives you a huge productivity boost all around and is just an overall better investment than anything else.

This is a solved problem, progression gates. Just make it so you need to raid a hard dungeon at the end of a tool tier (like ancient city or ocean monument) to get a key item that allows you to craft with the next tier of materials. Align it with different game stages, like how you need potion crafting to effectively raid an ocean monument, so it's mid-late game (post-nether). Also gate certain areas of the game, like making deepslate impossible to mine without iron tools.
Combine that with catch-22 crafting recipes, like smooth stone being required to create a furnace, so you cannot smelt smooth stone without first finding or obtaining smooth stone. And you need to make an iron furnace with iron to smelt iron. etc.

Yes, but you'll definitely have to look up a guide before even creating your world so you have a rough idea what you want (e.g. don't make recipes class-specific if you're playing singleplayer, good water coverage to make boats useful etc).
Might be best to increase tool durability too. The smiting mechanic is really satisfying the first time but after several dozen times forging steel pickaxes it's getting a little tiresome.
Real annoying that there's no good way to copy chiseled blocks. They should add a powered machine that can do that with late game parts.

that is usually what kills this game completely for me for a very long time, finding out way too late i'm on a completely shit seed. like you spend days in a perfectly normal overworld forest, start exploring, and then find out you're surrounded by like 40,000 blocks of water or over 9000 hectares of the exact same forest biome or some boring shit like that.

it's an easy fix but mojang is retarded.
all they have to do is give armor trims to tiers below diamond protective abilities. If you trim your iron armor, it should give you the same protection as diamond. It makes no sense to me why trims cost 7 diamonds to replicate; there's no incentive to add armor trims to your sub-diamond armors because you both never wear them and you will end up replacing them for diamond (and then netherite) so it's retarded. you give trims protection to armor and you fix part of the progress issue significantly

Copper is good for armor befofe you have diamonds and abundant iron, because you can just use more iron on pickaxes to get diamonds

that's actually a pretty interesting idea. would make them actually useful since nobody uses golden tools, and golden armor is literally just to not have piglins fuck with you

it was good when it had no balance and no progression and no story and was just wandering around in an empty wasteland building stuff
this was so good that all the subsequent years of making the game worse has still resulted in a playable game many people enjoy

What's interesting is Minecraft already has an abandoned skeleton of similar mechanics surrounding gold. For example a little known fact is that you have a much higher chance of getting high level enchantments on gold tools. From what I can gather the in-universe lore explanation seems to be that gold has innately magical properties, which would carry over to this change because it would explain why gold is uniquely suited to survive the nether.

sounds like the game is fundamentally not designed for multiplayer and you should find a better game

yeah I feel like wearing copper armor will be standard for me.
I tend to be pretty stingy with diamonds and stick to iron as resting gear, even with a good amount of available diamonds, and with this change I might just lean more towards resting copper gear.

Reminder Mojang's official stance is that introducing any kind of meaningful progression to the game would be antithetical to Minecraft's design philosophy
Mojang wants the game to be bland and boring for all playstyles, so no content is locked behind other content, just in case the player is a female who wants to farm instead of killing monsters. Jeb actually admitted that even creepers go against minecraft's current design philosophy, and that the only reason they're in the game is because they are too classic and iconic to remove.

forcing people to use a specific material in a specific circumstance doesn't make it useful. it just makes it feel, well, forced. just look at gold armor and how you're forced to use it for piglin bartering. did that make gold armor more interesting or generally useful? no, it just mandated its use in a specific circumstance.
if you want to make gold useful you need to make it a useful addition to your day-to-day minecraft experience.
